Places to see in ( Chicago - USA ) Lyric Opera of Chicago
Lyric Opera of Chicago is one of the leading opera companies in the United States. It was founded in Chicago in 1954, under the name 'Lyric Theatre of Chicago' by Carol Fox, Nicolà Rescigno and Lawrence Kelly, with a season that included Maria Callas's American debut in Norma. The company was re-organized by Fox in 1956 under its present name and, after her 1981 departure, it has continued to be of one of the major opera companies in the United States. The Lyric is housed in the Civic Opera Building, which the company now owns.
The first opera to be performed in Chicago was Bellini's La sonnambula, presented by a traveling opera company on 29 July 1850. Chicago's first opera house opened in 1865 but was destroyed in the Great Fire of Chicago in 1871. The second opera house, the Chicago Auditorium, opened in 1889.
Carol Fox, America's first female opera impresario at the age of 28, began her first season in 1954 by bringing Maria Callas for her American debut in the title role of Norma, the first of many electrifying Callas performances in Chicago. However, this first eight-opera season in 1954 was not the result of a long apprenticeship in opera production; Carol Fox, fluent in Italian and French, had studied opera singing for many years, culminating in two years of intensive work in Italy. However, when she realized that performance was not to be in her future, she decided that it lay in bringing the performances of the world's finest artists to her home town of Chicago. Her success can be measured in one statistic regarding the filling of the Lyric's Civic Opera House: in 1954, the season ran for three weeks; in 2007/08 the Lyric had an almost six-month season.
The company's permanent home is the Civic Opera House, a building which it rented from 1954 until after the 1993 renovations. It is a 1929 structure with an Art Deco interior. Its 3,563-seat capacity makes it the second-largest opera auditorium in North America after the Metropolitan Opera House in New York City. The interior was named The Ardis Krainik Theatre in 1996 in honor of Ardis Krainik, the former General Director, who was responsible for its renovation from 1993 onwards.
In 2017, Lyric Opera of Chicago as house manager of the theater announced that the Joffrey Ballet plans to move from its longtime performance venue at the Auditorium Theatre to the opera house in 2020. The announcement coincided with the Lyric’s presentation of a new production of Gluck's Orfeo ed Euridice by choreographer John Neumeier; the production fused the musical and ballet elements of the opera and featured the Joffrey Ballet.

To Downtown Chicago and Back on the Dan Ryan Red Line
Among the sights you'll see (in order): Heading toward downtown, the IIT Research Institute (the tall white Mies building at 35th St), the ancient red terra cotta buildings that were a part of IIT's ancestor, Armour Institute, Van der Cook School of Music, in the building formerly occupied by the Association of American Railroads, and the Cermak Salt Dome (the beige tent-like building with the patched roof), where road salt is stored,.
Downtown, there's the State/Lake elevated station, the Chicago Theatre and its iconic marquee, the Joffrey Ballet and the two-story State/Randolph Walgreens, both housed in the same building, Macy's (formerly Marshall Field's) and its famous corner clocks, and a view south down State Street from Randolph.
Then I head down the stairs at the Lake Red Line Subway station, walking against the tide in the morning rush hour, and walk the length of the platform to catch a southbound train.
Going back southbound, you'll see Chinatown, which has greatly expanded from its former nexus at Cermak and Wentworth, and farther south, the train races a CTA bus. Who will win. ;)
The final stop is Comiskey Park, home of the White Sox, at the 35th Street station.

Chicago's North Loop, State Street View
The North Loop along State Street: the iconic Chicago Theater marquee, panning down State Street past the Joffrey Ballet and the two-story State and Randolph Walgreen's to Macy's on the left and the the Exciting Changes at the Shops at Block 37 on the right -- all stores open. (The exciting change is the construction of a long-planned highrise on top of the stores.
Interesting. Water Tower Place opened 40 years ago in the middle of a recession and was an instant hit; it started the transformation of Michigan Avenue from a Midwestern Champs Elysees to the vertical Woodfield Mall it is today.
The Shops at 37 are still struggling, 7 years after they first saw the light of day. You can pretty much say that about State Street in general.

Driving Downtown Streets - LaSalle Street - Chicago Illinois USA - Episode 57.
Starting Point: .
LaSalle Street is a major north-south street in Chicago. The portion that runs through the Chicago Loop is considered to be Chicago's financial district.
The Loop, along with the rest of downtown Chicago, is the second largest commercial business district in the United States, after New York City's Midtown Manhattan. Its financial district near LaSalle Street is home to the CME Group's Chicago Board of Trade and Chicago Mercantile Exchange.
The street was nicknamed The Canyon due to the tall, steep buildings that lie on both ends of the relatively narrow street, with the Chicago Board of Trade Building as the abrupt end of the apparent box canyon.
In Popular Culture
The street, Chicago Board of Trade Building, and 200 North LaSalle were used in the 2005 film Batman Begins and its sequel The Dark Knight, as well as in the 1999 movie Payback. The view facing south down the canyon has been used in the movies The Untouchables, Public Enemies, Transformers: Dark of the Moon and Road to Perdition. The canyon was in the movie Ferris Bueller's Day Off.

It also has professional sports teams in each of the major professional leagues. Chicago has many nicknames, the best-known being the Windy City.
Tourism
In 2014, Chicago attracted 50.17 million domestic leisure travelers, 11.09 million domestic business travelers and 1.308 million overseas visitors. These visitors contributed more than US$13.7 billion to Chicago's economy. Places to see in ( Chicago - USA ) The Loop
The Loop is the central business district and downtown area of Chicago, Illinois, United States. It is one of the city's 77 designated community areas. The Loop is home to Chicago's commercial core, City Hall, and the seat of Cook County. In the late nineteenth century, cable car turnarounds and prominent elevated railway encircled the area, giving the Loop its name.
The community area is bounded on the north and west by the Chicago River, on the east by Lake Michigan, and on the south by Roosevelt Road, although the commercial core has expanded into adjacent community areas. As a business center, some of the corporations the Loop hosts include the Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME), the world's largest options and futures contracts open interest exchange; the headquarters of United Continental Holdings, one of the world's largest airlines; AON; Blue Cross Blue Shield; Hyatt Hotels Corporation; BorgWarner, and other major corporations. The Loop is home to 500 acre Grant Park; State Street, which hosts a historic shopping district; the Art Institute of Chicago; several theaters; and numerous subway and elevated rapid transit stations. Other institutions in the Loop include the Willis Tower, once the tallest building in the world, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Lyric Opera of Chicago, the Goodman Theatre, the Joffrey Ballet, the central public Harold Washington Library, and the Chicago Cultural Center.
In what is now the Loop, on the south bank of the Chicago River, near today's Michigan Avenue Bridge, the US Army erected Fort Dearborn in 1803. It was the first settlement in the area sponsored by the United States. In 1908, Chicago addresses were made uniform by naming the intersection of State Street and Madison Street in the Loop as the division point for designating addresses, North, South, East or West on the Chicago street grid.
Loop architecture has been dominated by skyscrapers and high-rises since early in its history. Notable buildings include the Home Insurance Building, considered the world's first skyscraper (demolished in 1931); the Chicago Board of Trade Building, a National Historic Landmark; and Willis Tower, the world's tallest building for nearly 25 years. Some of the historic buildings in this district were instrumental in the development of towers. Chicago's street numbering system – dividing addresses into North, South, East, and West quadrants originates in the Loop at the intersection of State Street and Madison Street.
Chicago is still the nation's rail transportation hub and passenger lines once reached seven Loop-area stations by the 1890s. Transfers from one to the other was a major business for taxi drivers until the long-distance lines gave way to Amtrak in the 1970s with the majority of trains concentrated at Chicago Union Station.
This area abounds in shopping opportunities, including the Loop Retail Historic District, although it competes with the more upscale Magnificent Mile area to the north. It includes Chicago's former Marshall Field's department store location in the Marshall Field and Company Building; the original Sullivan Center Carson Pirie Scott store location (closed February 21, 2007). Chicago's Downtown Theatre District is also found within this area, along with numerous restaurants and hotels.
Chicago has a famous skyline which features many of the tallest buildings in the world as well as the Chicago Landmark Historic Michigan Boulevard District. Chicago's skyline is spaced out throughout the downtown area, giving it a graceful beautiful appearance. The Willis Tower, formerly known as the Sears Tower, the second tallest building in the Western Hemisphere, stands in the western Loop in the heart of the city's financial district, along with other buildings, such as 311 South Wacker Drive and the AT&T Corporate Center.

Top 5 Best Things to do in Chicago during the Holidays!
Hope you are all enjoying the holiday season! Michael and I were able to spend five jam packed days in Chicago before heading to the Bay Area, which is where we will be for the next few days. Since I'm a Californian, I rarely see snow, but this year I loved soaking up the festive snowy Holiday activities around the city of Chicago. Below is a list of my top five favorite things to do in Chi-Town for the holidays. Enjoy!
1) The Nutcracker. Do I even need to explain!?! The Joffrey Ballet performers are world renowned and they put on a truly magical show at the Chicago Auditorium. What's more fun than the Nutcracker? Opting for the VIP Nutcracker experience which includes a stay at the beautiful J.W. Marriot, a hot chocolate night cap (you can get yours spiked if you want) a signed ballet shoe, poster, ballet shoe cookies and an in room breakfast for two the next day. #TotesAmaze
2) Walking down Michigan Ave is a must during the holidays. Since it's probably going to be a bit chilly (and by chilly I mean freezing!) my advice is to get a hot chocolate from Ghirardelli and stroll down the street enjoying the high end shops, watching the people and doing some shopping.
3) Ice Skating at Millenium Park is such a fun thing to do with friends, family and/or a significant other. The happy holiday music will be sure to put you in the mood as you soar across ice all while enjoying beautiful city views.
4) State Street and Macy's, formerly Marshall Fields, is iconic for it's old-fashioned window displays. If you have kids, they will LOVE this.
5) ChristKrindl Village is a German inspired shopping village that pops up every year before Christmas where people can go and enjoy German food, beer, fancy ornaments and adorable German trinkets.
