This morning it is Buddha’s Birthday and we are heading to Jogyesa Buddhist Temple to enjoy the sights and sounds of the Lotus Lantern Festival. This temple is the most important Buddhist temple in South Korea and draws a large number of tourist with its overhead display of lanterns. I’m here to explore the culture and capture the moment through the lens of my camera.

Found in central Seoul, Jogyesa Temple is one of the most popular temples in the city.
Jogyesa Temple is located in the Jongno District of Seoul in South Korea and serves as the chief temple of the largest sect of Korean Buddhism. Jogyesa Temple is famous for its central location within Seoul, offering a unique experience to travelers looking for a peaceful oasis in the bustling city.
Inside Jogyesa Temple is covered in beautiful lanterns of all colors, and each June the temple hosts Buddha’s birthday celebration, sometimes called the Lotus Lantern Festival, when additional paper lanterns adorn the entire complex. With or without the extra decorations, visiting Jogyesa Temple is a peaceful and calming experience that is worth a visit any time of year.

Lotus Lantern Festival at Jogyesa Temple (조계사 연등회) - ???????? SEOUL WALK
Come walk around Jogyesa Temple during the Lotus Lantern Festival in downtown Seoul!
The Lotus Lantern Festival, called 연등회 (Yeondeunghoe), is held over the course of a few weeks to celebrate Buddha's birthday. Many different events, from lantern making, lantern lighting, music, and even a huge lantern parade, are held to bring together people from all over of all walks of life.
Jogyesa Temple is located in Jongno, downtown Seoul, very close to Gwanghwamun Square. It is the chief temple of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism. It was founded in 1395, but the current structure was built in 1910.

Seoul Walk | Jogyesa Temple

As the main temple as well as the district head temple of Jogye order in Seoul, Jogyesa Temple is the center of Korean Buddhism.
The temple was built in the late 14th century during the Goryeo period and was once turned into ashes due to fire and was rebuilt under the name of Gackhwangsa Temple in 1910 with the effort of many respectful monks, namely Han Yong-un and Lee Hee-gwang. The temple was given a role as the head temple of Korea’s Buddhism and renamed to Tegosa Temple in 1936.
In 1954, a purification drive took place to eliminate Japanese influence and revive traditional Buddhism, which established the present day Jogyesa Temple as a result.
Jogyesa Temple’s Dharma Hall serves as the main venue for several Buddhist events, holding rituals, lectures, ceremonies, and other events all year long.
The annual lantern festival in celebration of Buddhist’s birthday also takes place at this temple.

One of the biggest holiday of the year in Korea is Buddha's Birthday, celebrated by millions of people. My fourth of five videos to celebrate this wonderful holiday is at Jogyesa. I chose this place because other than Samkwangsa, this temple has one of the most lanterns within the area. Also, this temple is within Seoul, so there are lots to see and do.

Travel South Korea - Jogyesa Buddhist Temple
Jogyesa is the chief temple of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism, becoming so in 1936. It thus plays a leading role in the current state of Seon Buddhism in South Korea. The temple was first established in 1395, at the dawn of the Joseon Dynasty; the modern temple was founded in 1910 and initially called Hwanggaksa. The name was changed to Taegosa during the period of Japanese rule, and then to the present name in 1954.
Jogyesa is located in Gyeonji-dong, Jongno-gu, in central Seoul. Natural monument 9, an ancient white pine tree, is located within the temple grounds.

Daeungjeon (Main Dharma Hall) at Jogyesa Temple in Seoul, South Korea
Daeungjeon (Main Dharma Hall) is located at the center of Jogyesa Temple. It is named after Shakyamuni Buddha, whose golden statue is found inside. The building opened in 1938. In 2000, the hall was designated as an important cultural asset of Korea.
