Along the way, visitors will find the Canongate Tolbooth, the Kirk of Canongate, St. Giles Cathedral, the Heart of Midlothian, Edinburgh city chambers, Tron Kirk, the John Knox House, Camera Obscura and numerous shops and restaurants, which along with the palace and castle make the Royal Mile the primary tourist destination in Edinburgh.

Edinburgh is Scotland's compact, hilly capital. It has a medieval Old Town and elegant Georgian New Town with gardens and neoclassical buildings. Looming over the city is Edinburgh Castle, home to Scotland’s crown jewels and the Stone of Destiny, used in the coronation of Scottish rulers. Arthur’s Seat is an imposing peak in Holyrood Park with sweeping views, and Calton Hill is topped with monuments and memorials.
Edinburgh is the capital city of Scotland and one of its 32 local government council areas. Located in Lothian on the Firth of Forth's southern shore, Edinburgh is Scotland's second most populous city and the seventh most populous in the United Kingdom. Recognised as the capital of Scotland since at least the 15th century, Edinburgh is home to the Scottish Parliament and the seat of the monarchy in Scotland. The city is also the annual venue of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland and home to national institutions such as the National Museum of Scotland, the National Library of Scotland and the Scottish National Gallery. It is the largest financial centre in the UK after London.
Historically part of Midlothian, the city has long been a centre of education, particularly in the fields of medicine, Scots law, literature, the sciences and engineering. The University of Edinburgh, founded in 1582 and now one of four in the city, was placed 17th in the QS World University Rankings in 2013 and 2014. The city is also famous for the Edinburgh International Festival and the Fringe, the latter being the world's largest annual international arts festival. The city's historical and cultural attractions have made it the United Kingdom's second most popular tourist destination after London, attracting over one million overseas visitors each year. Historic sites in Edinburgh include Edinburgh Castle, Holyrood Palace, the churches of St. Giles, Greyfriars and the Canongate, and the extensive Georgian New Town, built in the 18th century. Edinburgh's Old Town and New Town together are listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which has been managed by Edinburgh World Heritage since 1999.
Situated in Scotland's Central Belt, Edinburgh lies on the Firth of Forth's southern shore. The city centre is 2 1⁄2 miles (4.0 km) southwest of the shoreline of Leith and 26 miles (42 km) inland, as the crow flies, from the east coast of Scotland and the North Sea at Dunbar.[56] While the early burgh grew up near the prominent Castle Rock, the modern city is often said to be built on seven hills, namely Calton Hill, Corstorphine Hill, Craiglockhart Hill, Braid Hill, Blackford Hill, Arthur's Seat and the Castle Rock
Edinburgh Airport is Scotland's busiest and biggest airport and the principal international gateway to the capital, handling around 11 million passengers in 2015. Travel in Edinburgh is undertaken predominantly by bus. Lothian Buses operate the majority of city bus services within the city and to surrounding suburbs, with the most routes running via Princes Street. Services further afield operate from the Edinburgh Bus Station off St Andrew Square and Waterloo Place and are operated mainly by Stagecoach, Scottish Citylink, National Express Coaches, First Scotland East & Perryman's Buses. Edinburgh Waverley Station is the second-busiest railway station in Scotland, with only Glasgow Central handling more passengers.

Exploring The Royal Mile, Edinburgh
A look at the famous Royal Mile in Edinburgh, Scotland. From Edinburgh Castle at the top to Holyrood Palace at the foot, there are four streets that make up the Royal Mile and it's at the heart of Edinburgh old town.
As the name suggests it's roughly one mile from the top to the bottom, and it's always better to begin at Edinburgh Castle as it's a steady climb if you explore the royal mile in the opposite direction.
Much of the historic Royal Mile and the various closes that run off it to the north and south, date back to medieval times and was the main spine of Edinburgh old town. Don't forget to wander into the 'closes' of the royal mile too as they're all certainly worth exploring.
Many of those 'closes' are featured here -
The Queen just happened to be resident in Holyrood Palace at the time i made this, which is why the kilted scottish soldiers were entering a palace side-gate at the end of the video.
There's not enough room here to add all the interesting and historic places on Edinburgh's Royal Mile, but one of my favourite places is probably the Musem of Childhood, which is situated just across the road from John Knox's house. Like almost all museums in Edinburgh, it's free to enter and certainly worth a visit.

Scotland’s Forgotten Suffering
3/4. Heavy fines, imprisonment, torture and execution. Frequently, and conveniently ignored, this was the period of Scotland's Greatest Persecution. A time when faithful Christians would inevitably suffer in continuing to follow God's Word. In a time of increasing hostility to Christian values, there are vital lessons for us today from this awful but heroic period.

The Palace of Holyroodhouse and surroundings
Forecourt of the Palace of Holyroodhouse, The Scottish Parliament and Arthur's Seat. On our walk across the Royal Mile we've visited Huntly House/ Museum of Edinburgh. Came by John Knox's House and we've seen our friend Todd Various perform. His 'victim' this time was Billy 'The Kid'.
Finally John almost was knocked over by an asian girl while he was filming a piper. Coffee tasted great by the way
Edinburgh's Royal Mile - History, Museums, Pubs, Shops and More!
With history, museums, pubs, restaurants, shops and more, Edinburgh's Royal Mile is a must-do in Scotland. It is easily in any Top Ten list for Scotland and Edinburgh. Starting at Edinburgh Castle, you pass hundreds of years of history, from churches like St Giles Cathedral where John Knox preached to The World's End where the walled city of Edinburgh and it's residents worlds ended and the Cannongate Kirkyard with the grave of Adam Smith (amongst others). Continuing down the mile, it also includes modern history like the relatively new Scottish Parliament, until you reach the Queen's residence in Edinburgh, The Palace of Holyrood House, or Holyrood Palace. Overlooking all of this is the extinct volcano Arthur's Seat. With shops, pubs, restaurants and the former of home of V herself, the Royal Mile has something to interest everyone. The museums are must-dos, with The Museum of Childhood taking everyone back to their childhood, The Museum of Edinburgh, The John Knox House and The People's Story, to name a few.
If you're visiting Edinburgh, Scotland, the Royal Mile is a great place to start your adventure!

Colonial Caledonian - Researching early Scottish music at Sydney Living Museums
In 2017, Dr Robertson-Kirkland received funding from the University of Glasgow’s Ross Fund, which offers researchers the opportunity to examine materials held outside Scotland that relate to the history of Scotland, the Scottish people and their influences abroad. The month-long exploratory survey focused on the Stewart Symonds Sheet Music Collection, recently acquired by the Caroline Simpson Library & Research Collection, which contains some of the earliest surviving examples of Scottish sheet music brought to Australia in the 19th century.
In the late 18th and early 19th centuries, a tradition of collecting and preserving Scots songs in print grew out of a fear that this heritage was disappearing. This domestic music repertoire was designed and printed for the growing middle class and brought to Australia by Scottish immigrants, among others.
Dr Robertson-Kirkland explored the relationship between popular Scots songs in Britain and Australia during this period and sought out Scottish publications which are now rare in Britain. In March 2017, at the Sound Heritage Sydney [ symposium held at Elizabeth Bay House, Brianna presented her preliminary findings, ‘Music from Home: Sydney Living Museums’ Sheet Music Collections and the Scots in Australia’ [ along with a performance of two 18th century songs, ‘Morag’ [ and ‘If a Body Meets a Body’ [ from the Stewart Symonds collection.
Brianna’s visit has enabled SLM to look more deeply at its sheet music collections and explore new ways this material can be shared further afield. Over the next 12 months the sheet music examined by Brianna and discussed in this film will be digitised and made available through the SLM’s online sheet music page at Internet Archive [ and performance opportunities also explored.
