High Sierra: A Journey on the John Muir Trail - Full Movie | Snagfilms
HIGH SIERRA: A JOURNEY ON THE JOHN MUIR TRAIL is a first-hand experience along the John Muir Trail, through the tallest mountain range in the contiguous United States. It follows a group of students at they make the 220 mile trek in the wake of John Muir's own footsteps. The film captures the visual splendor of the 'Range of Light' as well as the range of emotions and physical challenges that accompany such an epic adventure. It includes reflection by Yosemite Park Ranger, Shelton Johnson (also featured in Ken Burn's documentary, The National Parks), who shares poetic insight about the trail and the spiritual meaning and importance of the American wilderness.

John Muir in the New World - Trailer
John Muir in the New World - directed by Catherine Tatge
Preservationist, naturalist, author, explorer, activist, scientist, farmer, John Muir (4/21/1838 -- 12/24/1914) was all these things and more. Nearly a century after his death, this Scottish American is remembered and revered as the father of the environmental movement and the founder of the Sierra Club, the oldest and largest grassroots environmental organization in the United States. American Masters continues its 25th anniversary season with John Muir in the New World, airing nationally Monday, April 18 at 9 p.m. (ET) on PBS (check local listings) in honor of Earth Day (4/22) and John Muir Day (4/21). Explaining his impact then and now, this 90-minute documentary delves into Muir's life and influences with reenactments filmed in high definition throughout the majestic landscapes he visited: Wisconsin, Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada, the Alhambra Valley of California, and the glaciers of Alaska. Placing our nation's most important natural assets in a cultural and social context, John Muir in the New World is a timely reminder of America's unique and, ultimately, threatened eco-systems.

John Muir Trail - Slideshow
The John Muir Trail is the premier hiking trail in the United States. The trail starts in America's treasure, Yosemite National Park, and continues 215 miles through the Ansel Adams Wilderness, Sequoia National Park, King's Canyon National Park, and ends at the highest peak in continental United States, Mount Whitney at 14,496 ft.
Considering these facts, why rush? Our philosophy is to enjoy every mile, every meal, and every vista. We are average folks, not super athletes. We have hiked the whole trail in 30 days, and it was a pleasure. If you can't arrange such a length of time, consider hiking in one week or two-week segments, and complete it over the course of a couple summers.
Like any great adventure, planning is paramount. Here you will find resources to give you the best hike of your life.
Start dreaming, start planning. See you on the John Muir Trail!

Hiking Mt. Whitney in a Day
Mount Whitney is the highest summit in the contiguous United States and the Sierra Nevada, with an elevation of 14,505 feet. It is on the boundary between California's Inyo and Tulare counties, 84.6 miles west-northwest of the lowest point in North America at Badwater in Death Valley National Park at 279 ft below sea level. The west slope of the mountain is in Sequoia National Park and the summit is the southern terminus of the John Muir Trail which runs 211.9 mi from Happy Isles in Yosemite Valley. The east slope is in the Inyo National Forest in Inyo County.
The hike was originally intended to be an overnight solo backpacking trip, but due to extreme cold weather at 12,000 feet (Trail Camp), I decided to turn this into a day hike. Began the epic hike at 5:00am and ended at 6:00pm. 6,200 feet of elevation gain over 23 miles.

Video From the John Muir Trail
Beginning on August 5th, 2012 I set out to solo hike the 211 mile John Muir Trail that runs throughout the Sierra Nevada Range from Yosemite National Park to Mt. Whitney, the tallest mountain in the continental United States (14,505'). I finished in 14 days on August 18th, 2012.
The project: Moving Mountains is an organization that I created to help bring light to others lives by embarking on a challenge. Through this challenge I was able to platform my hike as not only a self transforming trek, but a trek to benefit others. I choose to benefit Central Africa, specifically areas affected by the L.R.A led by Joseph Kony, and am funneling my support and money raised through fundraising to Invisible Children, Inc.
This video will give you a look at where I spent my time while hiking. Hopefully it will inspire you to get outside and find a way to make a difference.

The Bozeman Trail: A Rush to Montana's Gold
The Bozeman Trail was an offshoot of the Oregon Trail, a shortcut to the newly discovered gold fields of Montana Territory. Cutting through the heart of Indian country. It became a flash point for a clash of cultures that would explode into warfare, destruction and tragedy. First telecast March, 2019.

Yosemite • MOST DANGEROUS HIKE (one of America's top 10)the Mist Trail
Hiking the Mist Trail and its stairs... Lots and lots of stairs.
The Mist Trail is the most popular hiking trail in the Yosemite National Park, for reasons you can see in the video. It's amazing.
Vernal Fall Bridge is .8 miles from the Valley. The hike to the bridge is more of a walk, than a hike. The path is paved and well maintained. It's the easiest part of the trail.
To the top of Vernal Falls is another .7 miles, but is the toughest part of the trip. The incline is gradual, but quickly gets difficult (strenuous in hiking vernacular), to the point where you're climbing steep steps for about 300 feet. The few at the top is fantastic. There is a flat area where you can take a break, have some food, and chill out before you tackle the next half of the trip.
On a morbid note, but worth mentioning, is that people die at this point of the trail every year. Every year. Mostly it's from people swimming at the top (in the Spring and late Summer) getting caught in the currents, and getting swept over the falls. Despite the fact that there are well marked trails in many parts of the park, it is still the wilderness. People thinking that they are in an amusement park, with many layers of safety protocols in place, are more apt to hurt themselves. Backpacker.com calls the Mist Trail (which leads to the Half Dome trail) one of the 10 most dangerous hikes in America-- especially when it's raining and the rocks become slippery. So, please use caution.
The next 1.9 miles, if you choose to continue the hike (most people don't) will bring you to the top of Nevada Falls. The first half of the trail is very gradual, as it winds through the forest. You're then brought to another set of stairs. Although they're longer than the stairs at Vernal Falls, then don't seem as difficult. Possibly because the was more room to build these stairs and they aren't as steep. The view from the top of Nevada Falls is spectacular and, in my opinion, worth the trouble it takes to get there.
At this point, you're only .9 miles from Little Yosemite Valley. It's a relatively easy hike, if you have the time and energy.
Most people will take the John Muir Trail back down from the top of Nevada Falls. It's a gradual path (although a bit steep in parts) with no stairs. It's a bit longer, but not much, and offers a great view of Nevada Falls and the back of Half Dome.

In this week’s episode we talk with Blair Woodcock who recently completed a thru-hike of the 211 mile (340 km) USA based John Muir Trail. Many backpackers say this trail contains the finest mountain scenery in the United States, and runs (mostly in conjunction with the PCT) from Yosemite Valley to Mount Whitney, in California. In this episode we provide an overview of one of the world’s most spectacular trails and hear a firsthand overview of what a thru hike was like. australianhiker.com.au
Muir Woods National Monument Tour ~ HD
Take a 2-minute high definition tour of Muir Woods National Monument. Muir Woods is part of Golden Gate National Recreation Area on California's rugged Northern Coast within an hour of San Francisco. Home to California's coast redwoods, the tallest trees on the planet, this sanctuary of old growth redwoods was set aside by President Theodore Roosevelt 100 years ago. This is the best tree-lovers monument that could possibly be found in all the forests of the world, declared conservationist John Muir when describing the majestic coast redwoods of Muir Woods.
Muir Woods is also home to Banana Slugs, North Americas largest land mollusk.

Ansel Adams Wilderness (California) Backpacking - September 2015
My final 'big' backpacking trip of the 2015 season sent me to the Ansel Adams Wilderness in The Sierra Nevada near Mammoth Lakes, California. I had previously planned to hike the iconic Rae Lakes Loop but the massive Rough Fire had different plans for me. With the single road into the Rae Lakes trailhead closed by the Rough Fire I was left scrambling to change my plans only a week before my departure date.
Though it wasn't my first choice, the loop I ended up doing proved to be a worthy alternative - Agnew Meadows past Shadow Lake, up Shadow Creek to Ediza Lake, then on to Garnett Lake, to Thousand Island Lake via the John Muir Trail, and return to the Agnew Meadows Trailhead via the Pacific Crest Trail. Mileage was low but the views were off-the-charts incredible.
I've taken many 'solo' backpacking trips, but always with at least one dog as a companion. This was my first truly solo trip, and combined with the short mile days (which left a ton of down time in the afternoons), the four days alone in the Sierra certainly became a 'growth experience'.
This was also my first opportunity to backpack in the Sierra Nevada, and I was blown away. As my previous videos probably show I truly have a love affair with Colorado and Glacier, but The Sierra Nevada might actually be one notch above those magnificent settings. The 'pointy' peaks of white granite set against a backdrop of the ever-present ridiculously blue skies, the comfortable dry air and lower altitudes, the gently graded and perfectly maintained trails, and (always) the smell of pine, fir, and juniper created the perfect backpacking setting.
Hiking the entire John Muir Trail has long been an entry on my 'bucket list' and this trip drove that desire deeper into my soul. I'm not sure when I can make that dream happen, but having now had a small taste of the JMT I'm driven to someday soon have the full JMT 'meal'.
For those who have watched my other videos this one is done in the same style - a little over an hour in length total, intended to bring the audience along for the ride, and with a 10 minute still picture slide show with music at the end. If you just have a few minutes just skip to the end and enjoy the pictures.
