He fought at the battles of Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, Cold Harbor, Petersburg, and Five Forks. He later served as governor of Maine from 1867-1871 and president of Bowdoin College from 1871-1883. Imagine yourself living in a turbulent time - so much so that the harmonic integrity of the society in which you live has degraded to the point where your obligation shifts from that of caring for your precious family and living the actionable components of your Masonic obligations to that of being rigorously swept away into a climate of hate, intolerance, and complete and utter despair. Please pause here to reflect on what you've just read.
Many of our Masonic brethren have come to know these experiences. Through their sharing of good humor, tall tales, and sometimes even the raw and honest truth, we come to know the challenges of a regular and upright Masonic life. We, as good men, seek truth and act upon the square. A virtuous life, well studied, may gift us rare insights by which we are enabled to make our own observations and fortify our capacity as makers of distinctive decisions.
This is a rare opportunity in deed. You see, I've been contributing to the Maine Mason Magazine for only a short time now. I had an email one afternoon from an old high school classmate. He asked if I was the Bro. Jason Carey writing in the Maine Mason Magazine. To my surprise, he is also a Mason and his fathers before him were raised in the very same lodge in which I was raised - Bethlehem Lodge #35 AF & AM. Just weeks before this, Worshipful Bro. Cedric Novy and I were talking about the significance of 1894 as it relates to the Abnaki (Masonic) Club here in Augusta. How regal and stately a location it is and how its regular arrangement of proportions and ornamanetations manifest greatness and fortitude of the character and the mind. Cedric's wish was to dedicate a room inside the Abnaki Club to our Brother Joshua Chamberlain. Later that same week I received the email from the old classmate Jason C. Libby, who has direct ties leading back to his family working with Chamberlain's family in the Civil War.
Jason C. Libby, an accomplished student of the Civil War and its time, is looking forward to delivering a statesman like address to the Brothers of the 11th District on September 18th. Here is a little information about your gracious presenter for that evening:
Brother Jason C. Libby grew up in Augusta and is a graduate of Cony High School as well as the University of Maine with bachelor degree in history and political science and graduate degree in education. Returning to Maine from New York after several years in higher education administration, Brother Libby ran a historic preservation nonprofit and oversaw two museums. He currently works full time as a policy analyst for the State of Maine and also as an adjunct at Central Maine Community College and at the University of Maine. He is also the author of several historical books. Brother Libby is a member of several historical societies as well as the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, a director of the Maine Golf Hall of Fame, a cubmaster, and currently serves as vice chair of the Maine Historic Preservation Commission. Brother Libby is married, has two sons and a dog and is backup caregiver to his sons' various other pets. He was raised at Mechanics Lodge #66 in Orono, is a member of the Valley of Androscoggin and Portland and while in New York served as secretary of a lodge and as a member of a Grand Lodge committee.
As you know, if you knew Bro. Cedric D. Novy at all, every great an important undertaking on the master's trestle board was designed to line up on its own free will and accord. This semi-public event on September 18th will start with dinner at 6:30 PM with J.C. Libby's presentation to start promptly at 7:30 PM. There is a ticket limit of one hundred. Union Hero - the Letters and Journals of a Civl War Surgeon
This is the fascinating account of the life of Dr. Franklin Dyer, a surgeon in the Union Army who participated in the battles of Antietam, Gettysburg, Spotsylvania and Petersburg among many others. Dr. Dyer served in the Union Army for three years, eventually becoming the Acting Medical Director of the entire Second Corps. He kept copious journals and records throughout his years of Civil War service, describing in great detail his work in field army hospitals and relaying chilling and detailed accounts of the battles of Antietam, Gettysburg and Petersburg. Dr. Dyer served under Generals Grant, McClellan, Howard, Gibbon and Hancock and offers fascinating, sometimes amusing portraits of these famous men while giving us an unflinching glimpse into the life of all Americans, both Union and Confederate, during the war that transformed the United States of America.

The speaker is Dr. Michael Chesson, Founding Dean of The American College of History and Legal Studies in Salem, New Hampshire. Dr. Chesson is a Pulitzer Prize nominated Civil War Historian, and editor of Dr. Franklin Dyer's journals.
