Catalina Island Travel Guide | California Travel Tips
California travel expert Veronica Hill shares her Catalina Island Travel Guide in this episode of California Travel Tips.
The second largest of the Channel Islands, just 22 miles from California's coast, Catalina makes a great family weekend.
Our kids had a blast on the hour-long ferry from Dana Point to the island, where we spotted sailboats, kayakers, and a pod of frolicking dolphins.
Once you disembark in Avalon Bay, grab a golf cart for a tour around the island, and then take a stroll along Crescent Drive, Catalina's main boardwalk, and check out the Catalina Casino (Avalon Casino).
Here, kids can enjoy a treat of spun taffy, ice cream or caramel apples at the old-fashioned confectionary Lloyds of Avalon — — or enjoy a few video games and skee ball at the Metropole Marketplace arcade.
A trip to the island isn't complete without a stroll along the Green Pleasure Pier, where you can grab some fish and chips at Eric's restaurant and then go for a cruise on the bay.
The Undersea Tour aboard the Starlight and Emerald semi-submersible vessels is a must-see.
During the voyage, you'll explore the clear waters of Lover's Cove and a protected kelp forest where you'll come face to face with bright orange garibaldi, spotted calico bass, and opaleyes — among many other types of marine life. The 45-minute tour is also offered at night.
To explore Catalina's rugged interior and native wildlife, hop aboard the Classic Inland Motor Tour, which follows the 1800s stagecoach route. In Middle Ranch, you'll meet Tachi, an endangered Santa Catalina Island Fox who acts as an educational ambassador for her species. You'll also see a herd of wandering bison, native woodpeckers, and perhaps a bald eagle or two.
At El Rancho Escondido, the Wrigley family's Hidden Ranch, you can enjoy an Arabian horse demonstration and then spend about 45 minutes walking through the ranch. Pet the horses in their stables, play with a wandering kitty, or watch a short film on the ranch's history. A small museum displays Bohlin saddles, carriages and family memorabilia.
After your tour, the Golf Gardens are just steps away. Known as one of the world's most challenging and beautiful miniature golf courses, the lushly landscaped grounds offer 18 holes of family fun.

TRANSCRIPT:
IT WAS IN THE YEAR 1919 THAT WILLIAM WRIGLEY, JR. FELL IN LOVE WITH AND PURCHASED SANTA CATALINA ISLAND. HIS VISION FOR THIS RUGGED MOUNTAINOUS LANDSCAPE BECAME HIS LIFE LEGACY.
HE WAS A PASSIONATE AND DEVOTED MAN WHO WANTED TO GIVE BACK TO THE PEOPLE AND SANTA CATALINA ISLAND WAS THE PERFECT PLACE FOR HIM TO CREATE A DESTINATION FOR ALL.
LOCAL HISTORIAN MICHELLE BESTUDIK CHARED MEMORABLE INSIGHTS ABOUT WRIGLEY AND HIS VISION FOR THE ISLAND.
WELL WRIGLEY MADE HIS FORTUNE IN CHEWING GUM AND HE ALWAYS FELT AN OBLIGATION TO PAY BACK THE PEOPLE THAT MADE HIM WEALTHY WITH SOMETHING WONDERFUL.
WRIGLEY'S SHREWDNESS FOR BUSINESS HELPED HIM AND HIS PLANS FOR THE ISLAND AND THE BEAUTY IN WHICH HE ENVISIONED IS SELF EVIDENT.
THE CASINO IS JUST OUR ICONIC CROWNING GLORY. IT REALLY IS BEAUTIFUL. IT WAS BUILT IN 1929 AND HE HAD THE CASINO BUILT FOR ENTERTAINMENT FOR HIS GUEST. THERE WAS A THEATRE DOWNSTAIRS, IT STILL IS OUR MOVIE THEATRE TODAY. THEATRE DESIGN FOR SOUND MOVIES AND THEN UPSTAIRS IS A GLORIOUS BALLROOM WHERE ALL THE BIG BANDS CAME AND PLAYED. SO PEOPLE CAME ACROSS ON THE STEAMERS AND THEN DANCED ALL NIGHT IN THE BALLROOM AND FREQUENTLY HOME THAT NITE DANCING ALL THE WAY BACK TO SAN PEDRO. IT WAS REALLY THE LAST THING THAT HE BUILT BEFORE HE PASSED AWAY AS FAR AS HIS TEN YEAR PROGRAM OF HAVING PURCHASED THE ISLAND AND THEN REDOING IT THE WAY THAT HE SAW IT TO BE AND IT IS JUST THE MOST WONDERFUL TRIBUTE THAT HE COULD HAVE EVER GIVEN TO THE ISLAND.
CATALINA ISLAND IS RICH IN HISTORY AND CAN BE SEEN IN THE MANY BUILDINGS AND LANDMARKS AROUND AVALON. WHILE THE TOWN OF AVALON HAS GROWN IT STILL MAINTAINS IT'S HISTORICAL CHARM AND TODAY THE QUAINT ISLAND TOWN OFFERS MUCH FOR LOCALS AND TOURISTS ALIKE.
JUST LOCATED OFF THE COAST OF SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA IN THE GULF OF SANTA CATALINA, THE ISLAND IS 22 MILES LONG AND 8 MILES WIDE AT IT'S WIDEST POINT. AND WHILE THERE ARE AROUND FOUR THOUSAND YEAR ROUND RESIDENTS, THOUSANDS OF TOURIST FLOCK YEARLY TO THIS LITTLE PIECE OF PARADISE.
AND THE BEST WAY TO GET THERE IS ABOARD THE CATALINA EXPRESS! THE HIGH-SPEED BOAT RIDE IS AN ENJOYABLE HOUR JOURNEY FROM LONG BEACH, CALIFORNIA AND OFFERS INDOOR AND OUTDOOR SEATING. AND AS THE LOCALS SAY WELCOME TO CATALINA ISLAND!

The Aurora Osprey on Catalina Island
12/2210 In front of the Aurora Hotel and Spa on top of a telephone pole, there sat an Osprey eating it's delicious meal. Diana, in charge of Group Sales, called me at the Avalon Hotel. She said, You gotta see this! I ran to the next street over and ran up the hill to see. Soooo entertaining to watch the ravens trying to get the fish away from this beautiful bird! These birds are also called a Fish Hawk. I hope you enjoy this as much as we did!
Maritime Minute: SS Catalina
Today, you can easily travel to Catalina Island by boat or helicopter in what seems like no time at all. Years ago, the journey was just as important as the destination. Marifrances Trivelli, Director of the Los Angeles Maritime Museum, shares the history of the SS Catalina, a steamship that carried millions of passengers from the Port of Los Angeles to Catalina Island for decades. Learn about the history of the vessel and what it would have been like to sail on the SS Catalina in this episode of Maritime Minute.
The Time When California was an Island
There was a time when California was an island. This wasn't a time far off in the past while the world was still forming, it was actually still an island as recently as the 18th century.
The massive island of California was separated from the continental United States by a strait known as the Gulf of California. The island of California stretched nearly the entire North American Pacific coast and was thought of as an island paradise. It was also one of the biggest mapping errors in human history.

Flight to Catalina to See the New Runway!
Catalina Airport has been closed to the public since January 2019 to resurface the runway, which it really needed. The airport opened on Friday, May 3rd, so we went the very next day to check it out.

TRAVEL VLOG | LOS ANGELES | FEBRUARY 2019 | FUN | FOOD | NEW FRIENDS | ADVENTURE | HOLLYWOOD
Check out my first ever trip to Los Angeles, and my first ever trip to the States in this travel vlog.
I went to LA in February 2019 as a pre-Birthday trip.
LA has been a dream of mine since I was a child, so I took the opportunity to see it as a Birthday gift to myself.
I was overwhelmed with everything as it felt so surreal.
I filmed so much that the shortest I could make it was approximately 40 minutes!
There was an issue with the music and unfortunately, it is a tiny bit lagged, but it doesn't make any impact on the entire video really.

Learning Journey Under the Sea: MMS Catalina Island 2015
Learning Journey Under the Sea, Mount Madonna School's 9th and 10th grade Catalina Island trip, May 2015. A big thank you to our hosts for providing such a beautiful location to study ocean life: the USC Wrigley Center (10th grade) and the Catalina Environmental Leadership Program (9th grade).
Each year, the 9th and 10th grade classes travel to southern California and study the ocean around Catalina. The Isthmus of Catalina has become a rich area full of educational opportunities. In addition to several programs for young people, a research facility, the Wrigley Marine Science Center, maintained by the University of Southern California Wrigley Institute for Environmental Studies, is used by graduate programs, the state and federal government, research divers, and academics from around the world.
Filmed and edited by Devin Kumar.
Additional GoPro and smartphone footage from Lisa Catterall and Tina Pendleton.
