Julián Castro Thinks His Path To The Nomination Is Through Nevada And Texas (HBO)
While many of the 2020 Democratic contenders are camped out in Iowa or New Hampshire, former Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Julián Castro is in Nevada. It’s his seventh visit to the Silver State since announcing his presidential exploratory committee.
“I see this state as just crucial to victory,” Castro said. “Out of the first four early states: Iowa, New Hampshire, Nevada, and South Carolina, I've always received the best response here in Nevada.”
Castro contends that he has a unique path to victory: an early win or strong showing in Nevada, followed by the same in California and Texas, both Super Tuesday states. It’s a path that plays on Castro’s supposed strengths.
The former Mayor of San Antonio, Texas argues that those Western and Southwestern states share a similar sensibility. Plus, as the only Latino vying for president, Castro believes he can mobilize the large Latino electorates in each of those states, and then do the same in the general election.
“I have no doubt that in 2020 the Latino turnout rate is going to go up because people are not just thinking about Donald Trump as a theoretical anymore,” Castro said. “They know how bad he's been as president.”
On Friday, Castro announced he’s reached the Democratic National Committee’s debate threshold of 65 thousand individual donors, along with the other criteria. So his fundraising may have accelerated since his first quarter numbers (he only raised $1.1 million) but the latest polls still show him in the single digits.
Castro seems unfazed by those early indicators. “What can I do except go and work hard and do what a lot of families out there do every day which is to scrap and to continue to work,” Castro said.

The Three Sisters set of waterfalls is one of the best waterfalls in Southern California when it is flowing and it is located about an hour and a half from San Diego. There are three tiers that cascade over large granite rocks in a really impressive manner. The 4-mile round trip hike may not seem tough, but you have to walk into and out of a steep canyon so be prepared for some slow hiking as you maneuver down the hill and there is no real shade.

The fiery Texas Democrat told supporters in a video that he no longer had viable path the the nomination as campaign funds dried up. “It’s with a heavy heart and with profound gratitude, that I will suspend my campaign for president,” Castro said. Castro said he was proud to have pushed to crowded field to take more progressive stands on issues like immigration and poverty. Like Harris, Castro is considered an effective campaigner who could be a strong contender to be a vice presidential candidate on a Democratic ticket. Castro ended his message with a nod to the diversity of the party by insisting in Spanish that “We will win one day! “To all who have been inspired by our campaign, especially our young people, keep reaching for your dreams,” he said. Republicans Turn on Each Other in US House Fight
(6 Jun 2018) Republicans are defending a string of endangered U.S. House seats in California, but one of the toughest fights in Tuesday's primary election involves two of their own.
Rep. Dana Rohrabacher is being challenged in Southern California's 48th District by a one-time protégé, lawyer Scott Baugh.
Baugh headed the Orange County GOP for a decade and says it's time for change. He says the 70-year-old congressman has ignored the district while emerging as Russia's leading defender on Capitol Hill.
Rohrabacher, seeking a 16th term, calls his rival an unethical lobbyist with questionable conservative values.
Several Democrats are among the top spenders in the race, including businessman Harley Rouda, who's backed by the party's campaign arm in the House, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. But Neuroscientist Hans Keirstead snagged the endorsement from the state Democratic Party.
A worst-case scenario for the Republicans would see no one from the party finish in the top two of the June 5 primary. That would give Democrats a seat that could help tip control of the House in their favor.
The uncertainty is heightened by the state's top-two primary system, in which all candidates appear on a single ballot but only the top two vote-getters regardless of party advance to a November runoff. In crowded, closely matched races, it's possible that only two Republicans advance to the runoff in some districts, or two Democrats.
