Jump off Rock is located in the Town of Laurel Park, NC. The elevation is approximately 2800 ft. Jump off Rock received its name from the story of Cherokee Indian lovers who were separated by a nearby battle in which the brave warriors were engaged. Upon the discovery her warrior was killed in battle, the Indian maiden jumped to her death from the rock. It is said that on nights when the moon lights Jump off Rock, the Indian Maiden can be seen jumping from the rock.
The roaring 20's brought the first of many dances and bands to Jump off Rock. The tradition carried for many years.
The Shipman family operated an Indian gift shop and charged a fee to see the view from the rock. The gift shop burned in the 70's. Shortly thereafter the Shipman family donated the property to the Town of Laurel Park and today it is a public park with not only the great view but several walking trails and great spots for family picnics.
Jump off Rock is open from sun up to sun down seven days a week.

DJI S900 & Panasonic GH4 @ Jump Off Rock 10/21/15
Kestrel Aerial Video set out to capture the splendor of Western North Carolina's fall colors at Jump Off Rock located in Laurel Park, NC. We wanted to show some of the capabilities of the DJI S900, A2 Flight Controller, Zenmuse Z15 Gimbal and the performance of the Panasonic Lumix GH4. The video includes a smooth rise and fall along a 360 degree CCW flight path and a counter-rotating 360 degree camera rotation which gives the viewer a true appreciation of the beauty in the place we call home. Other than a couple motion effects, the footage was not adjusted in any way. No color effects, gamma or level tweaks etc. Only what the GH4 and Olympus 12mm lens captured. Kestrel Aerial Video considers safety the #1 priority and all of the people seen in the footage were aware and willing participants.
Lake Jocassee Jumping
A small group of old friends and new friends got together today for Renee's 40th birthday and did one of the Lake Jocassee Tours' excursions. This one included rock hopping up the Thompson and Whitewater Rivers and swimming and playing along the way. Our first stop was the jumping wall for some cliff jumping.

Laurel Creek waterfall Lake Jocassee featuring Jacob Rackley Jake Vess and Emma Houston
Here's one of the 18 that I have gone to waterfalls on the Lake Jocassee SC.
At Laurel Creek Waterfall you can climb up behind the falls and there is a cave back there that you can chill. Some people call it Stoner cave and no there are not any bats in there. Jacob and Jake did an awesome job maneuvering down the waterfall as I have seen lots of people injured there. GJ fellas. The rocks and logs are very slippery so be very careful. On the main rock face which contains a sign, if you jump off....jump out and to the left as it drops to 30 feet there depending on water level. Before ascending approximately 30 feet to the left of the sign, it is really muddy on the left-hand side along the wall so I recommend take your flip-flops off before you walk over to climb up.

Jumping Off Rock Lake Jocassee and The Jocassee Gorges
Jumping-Off-Rock, an iconic viewpoint above Lake Jocassee within the Jocassee Gorges in northern Pickens County, can now be accessed all year round. Horsepasture Road from US 178 to the popular overlook and Camp Adger Road from US 178 to the Horse Mountain gate will be open for licensed vehicles. For safety, no ATV use will be allowed during the summer months.
S.C. Department of Natural Resources (DNR) decided to provide year-round access to the popular site since it is one of the most recognized overlooks in the state.
The Jumping-Off Rock area is one of the prime destinations on Jocassee. It has beautiful views and supports one of South Carolina's two pairs of nesting peregrine falcons. When the Falcons assumed residency six years ago, a new overlook was created near Jumping-Off Rock to avoid disturbance of the nesting pair of falcons.
The overlook is one of the most remarkable vistas in the Upstate. The beautiful view of Lake Jocassee and the Blue Ridge Mountains is a must see. One rare feature at the vista is that few signs of human development are seen there.
National Geographic recently identified Jocassee Gorges as one the top 50 of The World's Last Great Places. Several overlooks along the 9-mile ride on the Horsepasture Road to Jumping-Off Rock allow visitors to grasp a true sense of the vast extent of undisturbed landscape. The Horsepasture Road entrance is near the community of Rocky Bottom off U.S. Highway 178, about 8 miles north of the intersection of Scenic Highway 11 and U.S. Highway 178 in northern Pickens County.
