Western Caribbean, Gulf of Mexico on alert for possible tropical storm late next week
A tropical low could strengthen into the second named storm of the 2018 Atlantic Basin tropical season late next week.
All eyes will be on the western Caribbean next week, an area that looks to have the right conditions for a new tropical system to brew.
A tropical low is expected to develop north of the Nicaraguan coast around midweek, said AccuWeather Meteorologist Brett Rossio.
As the week progresses, the system looks to lift northward through the western Caribbean Sea, and eventually could reach the Gulf of Mexico. Depending on the exact conditions at the time, this low could become the next tropical depression or tropical storm in the Atlantic Basin.
Water temperatures in both the Caribbean and the Gulf are more than sufficient for tropical development and possible strengthening, added Rossio.
If the system reaches tropical storm strength, it will be given the name Beryl.
However, the atmospheric conditions across the Western Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico next week are not that simple.
Some pockets of wind shear, as well as drier air in the western Gulf of Mexico, could inhibit any rapid intensification or organization of the system as it moves northward.
Regardless of development, the tropical moisture from this low could bring flooding rain to the Yucatan peninsula as well as western Cuba.
If the system continues on the northward trajectory, it could send periods of heavy rain into the United States late next week.
Areas of the Florida Peninsula and Alabama could again see bouts of heavy rain, following the heavy rain from Alberto in late May. These areas might be even more susceptible to flash flooding this time, given the already-saturated ground.
However, the track of this tropical low at this stage is far from set in stone.
AccuWeather will continue to monitor the Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico for signs of tropical development throughout the Atlantic Basin tropical season.
Via CrankyWXguy
If it turns left, hurricane, if it goes straight north mid TS to maybe borderline Cat 1 (but the kind where one stupid thudnershower has 75mph and the rest is 60mph), if it bends east then disorganized trash. Watch the upper level low in the northern Gulf of Mexico....that's the entire key. System will track up the eastern flank of it. If it dips south west, then track north and turn west w/storm. Etc.
Loneliest Road in America
Recorded June 4, 2019
The most famous segment of U.S. Highway 50 is largely useless, running through Nevada about 100 or so miles south of Interstate 80, which is what sane people use today to travel the state. And yet this 287-mile stretch of highway has attained legendary status as the Loneliest Road in America. The designation was made by Life magazine in 1986 and has stuck, in good part because Nevada tourism authorities recognized what the acolytes of ruin porn have long known about the strange magic desolation works on the human spirit. There are, today, Loneliest Road signs along the road, and some stores in the sparse towns along Route 50 display I survived Route 50 signs in windows covered with geologic layers of grime.
Shortly after sunrise I depart Ely and set out across Nevada on this desolate stretch of highway. The index below contains the details of my adventure...

Bluesapalooza 2017 Lineup
The Mammoth Festival of Beers and Bluesapalooza started 22 years ago in Mammoth Lakes, California, in the parking lot of Whiskey Creek Restaurant with just ten breweries and a handful of beer-lovers. With BBQ ribs on the grill and a local garage band playing from the roof of the restaurant, it was a fun beginning. The idea behind the event was simple—have some fun and introduce Mammoth locals to the joys of handcrafted beers. The second year we threw in some real blues and a lot more breweries and we’ve never looked back. From these humble beginnings as one of the first craft beer and blues festivals, the event today attracts thousands of attendees from all over the world and is recognized as one of the best festivals of its kind in the United States.
The most beautiful venue in the West. It’s all outdoors among the pines—four days of incredible music and the best craft breweries in the country. This is Mammoth Lakes’ biggest event and the best party of the summer!
In winter, Mammoth Lakes is home to world-class skiing; in summer, it hosts the best Blues and Brews festival in the West. At 8000 feet, Mammoth is a beautiful mountain resort located near Yosemite National Park in the cool Eastern High Sierra, offering such outdoor adventures as skiing, golfing, kayaking, rock climbing, mountain biking, fishing, hiking, camping and world-class resort facilities. Mammoth Lakes is full of active people looking for adventure: the perfect place to spend a “blues and brews weekend.” Welcome to Altitude!
4K City Walks: McCall Idaho virtual treadmill walking tour
We recently took a trip over to Idaho and stayed in the alpine area of McCall, Idaho. In addition to skiing, snow showing, and x-country skiing, sleigh rides, and snow tubing, there are several hot springs in the area and many hotels and restaurants and at least three breweries. It reminded me a lot of little mountain towns in the NE of the US. It's actually been a low snow year so far so we were happy to find some ski-able terrain. And since its a small western town, everyone was friendly and welcoming. We stayed at the historic Hotel McCall which is where we start our walk. A heavy fog had settled in and obscures some of the views but lends its own special ambiance.
4K City Walks: McCall, Idaho virtual treadmill walking tour
Wikipedia:
McCall is a resort town on the western edge of Valley County, Idaho, United States. Named after its founder, Tom McCall, it is situated on the southern shore of Payette Lake, near the center of the Payette National Forest. The population was 2,991 as of the 2010 census, up from 2,084 in 2000.
Originally a logging community whose last sawmill closed in 1977, McCall is now an all-season tourist destination for outdoor recreation. The resort town is known for its Winter Carnival, extended winters, and one of the highest average snowfalls in the state
Native Americans were the first inhabitants of the land in and around McCall. Three tribes, the Tukudika (a sub-band of the Shoshone known as the Sheepeaters), the Shoshone, and the Nez Perce inhabited the land primarily in the summer and migrated during the harsh winter months.
In the early 19th century, the nomadic French Canadian fur trapper, François Payette, roamed the area alongside other mountain men including Jim Bridger, Peter Skene Ogden, and Jedediah Smith.
During the 1860s, miners temporarily named the settlement Lake City, but only alluvial gold was discovered, so the temporary establishment was abandoned as most mining activity moved fifty miles (80 km) north to the town of Warren.
The settlement of McCall was established by Thomas and Louisa McCall circa 1889-91. For a cabin and assumed rights to the 160 acres (0.65 km2) of land, they traded a team of horses with Sam Dever, who held the squatter rights. Tom, his wife, four sons and a daughter lived in the cabin located on the shore of the lake, near present-day Hotel McCall. He established a school, hotel, saloon, and post office, and named himself postmaster. McCall purchased a sawmill from the Warren Dredging company and later sold it to the Hoff & Brown Lumber Company, which would become a major employer until its closure in 1977.
During this time Anneas Jews Harp Jack Wyatte provided the first recreational sailboat rides around the lake for tourists and advertised in Boise's Idaho Statesman a 30-foot sailing yacht for the use of parties who might visit the lake. The Statesman referred to McCall as a pleasure resort.
Tourism continued in the early 20th century. In June 1902, the Boydstun Hotel in nearby Lardo opened as a place to stay and camp on Payette Lake. In 1906, Charlie Nelson opened a tented camping area known as Sylvan Beach Resort along the west side of Payette Lake. In 1907, Lardo Inn opened for business. The arrival of the Oregon Short Line Railroad (a subsidiary of the Union Pacific Railroad) in 1914 secured McCall as a viable community and tourist destination. Three years later McCall was incorporated as a village. In the 1920s, the state land board started leasing homesites along the lake.

Overflowing Great Lakes threaten bird species
(17 Jun 2019) Trouble is brewing for the piping plover, already one of the Great Lakes region's most endangered species, as water levels surge during a rain-soaked spring that has flooded large areas of the Midwest.
Pools are forming behind several nests along a beach at Michigan's Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. And Lake Michigan has crept within a few yards of the plovers' nesting zone.
Their home could be one storm away from destruction. And this is one of the most hospitable spots for the plump, sparrow-sized shorebirds. Conditions are worse elsewhere.
The Great Lakes are reaching some of their highest levels since the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers began keeping records 101 years ago. Many beaches are shrinking or submerged.
For piping plovers, it's a mortal threat. Squeezed out of familiar turf, they move closer to places with trees and underbrush, where predators lurk, or even flee to urban areas.
The habitat that they utilize has been greatly diminished by the high water, said Vince Cavalieri (CAV'-eh-LEER'-ee), piping plover coordinator for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The high water levels put them in danger for a number of reasons like washouts and putting them close to predators.
The Great Lakes generally rise with the snowmelt and rainstorms of spring and dip during later dry spells. Those minor fluctuations happen within larger high and low periods that can last years.
But some scientists believe climate change is causing more frequent and intense shifts.
If so, the piping plovers' situation could become more precarious. Their numbers already have plummeted with shoreline development. The federal government lists them as threatened in the northern Great Plains and along the Atlantic coast, where rising sea levels imperil their wintering grounds. But the Great Lakes population is endangered, hitting a low of just 12 breeding pairs in 1990.
Recovery projects are helping; 76 pairs were counted in 2017 and 67 last year. This year's census is still underway but expected to yield similar results.
The next few weeks are crucial. Most of this year's eggs will hatch by the end of June. If additional storms don't wash away nests, a new batch of youngsters may survive.
But long-term prospects will be dicey until the waters recede.
Piping plovers are a migratory species, breeding during summers in the northern U.S. and Canada and heading south to winter in coastal areas from the Carolinas to Texas.
Once settled in, they spend lots of time on the ground _ building nests, guarding eggs, darting about in search of food such as insects, spiders and crustaceans. Their plumage, a mixture of light browns and grays with a black collar, provides camouflage.
At Sleeping Bear Dunes, home to nearly half of the Great Lakes plovers during spring and summer, breeding grounds are roped off and posted with keep-out signs. Nests are topped with cage-like enclosures that bar entry to predatory merlins, gulls, raccoons, foxes and coyotes but leave enough space between the wires for the plovers to enter and exit.
In addition to serving as security guards, professionals and volunteers can perform emergency rescues if flooding is imminent.
They are an absolutely phenomenal species, said Erica Adams, a National Park Service plover specialist. They represent so many great things about the Great Lakes and conservation and how people have come together.
