What I Did On My Christmas Vacation
Chasing the northern lights is not for the faint of heart.
Tamara Laine headed to Alaska to see the natural phenomenon firsthand. The best time to see them is during the dead of winter when temperatures dip below freezing.
So, what makes Mother Nature's light show so magical? The aurora borealis, or the northern lights, is the Earth's magnetic field interacting with charged particles from the sun. When they start forming, it looks like clouds. Shortly after, they light up into an array of colors.
In Fairbanks they're known to come out between 11 p.m. and 3 a.m., but they are elusive and no one knows when they'll actually appear. Though the sun shines for only four hours during the winter months, there are plenty of things to do.
Just Short of Magic is a dog mushing school that teaches everything you need to know before hitting the trails. If you need to warm up after outdoor adventures, Chena Hot Springs allows travelers the chance to dip into 103-degree natural hot springs.

15 Magical Places in America
The United States of America are home to countless beautiful landscapes and natural wonders so it’s hard and almost unfair to choose only 15 Magical Places. Nevertheless, we decided to put together a completely subjective list of places that left us completely speechless. Life is short, so make sure to include one of this beauties in your next trip.

#5 Northern Lights, Alaska
The best place on Earth to experience the magnificence of the northern lights is definitely Alaska. Head to Fairbanks between late August and April, sit back in a heated aurorium cabin or simply walk outside and look up to the sky. Aurora borealis or The Northern Lights are the results of collisions between electrically charged particles from the sun’s atmosphere and gaseous particles from Earth's atmosphere. They occur 60 miles above the Earth, making a colorful display of brilliant yellow-green and sometimes even red- purple patterns.
#4 The Wave, Arizona
The Wave is a sandstone formation located in Paria Canyon-Vermilion Cliffs Wilderness. In order to maintain the natural integrity only 20 people per day are allowed to visit The Wave. For that, you will need a day-use permit that you have to get up to 4 months in advance in an on- line lottery, or by lottery the day before visiting. There are no marked trails or signs to guide hikers that have to be prepared also for fierce winds, harsh desert conditions and blowing sand. You ask: Is all that hassle worth it? Definitely yes. Here you can create the most wonderful Instagram- worthy photos that need no filter.
#3 Dry Tortugas National Park, Florida
Florida is without a doubt one of the most beautiful US states. Here in the Sunshine State, you have The Dry Tortugas National Park, located only 68 miles west of Key West. You can get there by ferry or seaplane from Key West. The park consists of small archipelago of seven coral islands and Fort Jefferson, a massive yet unfinished fortress made from 16 million bricks. Here you can find abundant sea life, coral reefs, and sunken treasures.
#2 Kilauea Volcano, Hawaii Volcanoes National Park
The sacred place for Hawaiians is also the most active volcano on Earth. The Kilauea volcano is sometimes called, the world's only drive-in volcano. It produces 250,000-650,000 cubic yards of lava on daily basis ever since January 3rd, 1983. You can take a hike through volcanic craters and watch blistering lava flows meet the sea.
#1 Maroon Bells, Colorado
Just 10 miles from Aspen, Colorado you have the most photographed mountains in the USA. Unmatched mountain scenery created by two peaks in the Elk Mountains called the Maroon Bells and the reflective lake. It took more than 300 million years of sedimentation and erosion to create the Maroon Valley, a natural wonder that truly encapsulates the beauty of the Rocky Mountains.
6K real time 360 footage of the Aurora Borealis at Healy, Alaska.
Here is some real-time 360 footage of the Northern Lights near Healy, Alaska Which I filmed from the middle of a frozen lake which shows all sorts of different aurora formations in real-time. How many different formations can you spot? For those of you who have been following me for awhile, do you prefer the real-time clips or the timelapse clips? Let me know in the comments.
For those new to 360 northern lights videos:
This is the sort of video which you may want to put on some VR goggles, lay back in a recliner, and just watch for awhile.
No VR headset? SInce this is uploaded in 360 format, you can still watch it on a smartphone by moving your device around or swiping the screen to change your view also compatible on desktop computers (you'll just have to use a mouse to drag the screen around).

The National Park Service (NPS) is an agency of the United States federal government that manages all national parks, many national monuments, and other conservation and historical properties with various title designations.[1] It was created on August 25, 1916, by Congress through the National Park Service Organic Act[2] and is an agency of the United States Department of the Interior. The NPS is charged with a dual role of preserving the ecological and historical integrity of the places entrusted to its management, while also making them available and accessible for public use and enjoyment.
As of 2017, the NPS employs approximately 27,000 employees who oversee 417 units, of which 59 are designated national parks

Magnitude 9.2: The 1964 Great Alaska Earthquake
Magnitude 9.2: The 1964 Great Alaska Earthquake is a short video relating how the largest quake in U.S. history had profound and lasting impacts on our lives. The video features USGS geologist George Plafker who, in the 1960's, correctly interpreted the quake as a subduction zone event. This was a great leap forward in resolving key mechanisms of the developing theory of plate tectonics. Loss of life and destruction from the quake and accompanying tsunamis was the impetus for things like the NOAA Tsunami Warning Centers and the USGS Earthquake Hazards Program.
Surprise for man who unwittingly finds magic mushrooms in Yangmingshan
A local man got more than he bargained for when he harvested mushrooms to cook with in Yangmingshan National Park and they turned out to be magic mushrooms. The surprise trip was reported to police, who vowed to step up patrols and investigate how these natural psychedelics ended up in the park. Today the Seventh Special Police Corps, which handles security in national parks, headed to Qingtiangang, Yangmingshan. An officer plucked mushrooms growing in cow dung in order to conduct lab testing.Wang Jhih-cheng7th Division, 7th Special Police CorpsWe're collecting evidence to send to related agencies for tests. Dogs Watching a Winter Sunset
On our way back from a hike in the woods, we stopped to watch the sun going down. Even the dogs seemed to appreciate it.
Night of the Northern Lights
On 25th February 2014 Sun produced X4.9 flare which on 27th February caused G2 (KP 6) geomagnetic storm on Earth. It was the brightest aurora display so far during this solar maximum which I could witness with auroral displays overhead in the far north of Scotland. This short movie illustrates what has been seen from latitude 58.3 degrees north.

DINNER AT THE ARCTIC CIRCLE - FINGER ROCK MOUNTAIN - DALTON HIGHWAY EXPEDITION - LeAw Vlog #056
Welcome to our channel! We are Sara and Luca, Italian couple and travel storytellers!
Make sure you SUBSCRIBE to this channel so you don't miss out on future adventures.
We left you on Vlog #055 that we had just crossed the Yukon River.
Da day is still really long. We are driving on the Danton Highway on our Arctic Ocean Expedition.
The James Dalton Highway is a legendary road.
More info at
As we told you, the pipeline will be with you all the road up to the Arctic Ocean, get used to seeing it all the time.
Our next stop is at the Finger Mountain - Finger Rock - The alpine tundra is amazing. Lichens and white mountain avens dominate the well-drained rocky ridges, while the more saturated soils alongside the road are covered by dense stands of dwarf shrubs. Beautiful views. Finger Rock (elev. 1,875 feet - 571 meters) stands out on the horizon.
Tors are visible for several miles in this area, but Finger Rock is the iconic one. They are date back to the Cretaceous period nearly 110 million years ago. Prehistoric hunting sites are also numerous in this region.
As you can see in the video we made a drone footage all-round Finger Rock. On the hike to get to the tor, there are good opportunities for picnicking, photography, berry picking (blueberries, low-bush cranberries) in season, wildflower viewing, bird watching and seeing arctic ground squirrels.
Our last stop for the day is at the Arctic Circle BLM Wayside with picnic tables scattered through pristine woods, grills, pit toilets and litter barrels.
The Arctic Circle sign, with a big blue earth and Latitude 66°33' on it, is a popular photo op with travelers. At this latitude (N 66°33' W 150° 48'), the sun does not set on the summer solstice (June 20 or 21) and it does not rise on the winter solstice (December 21 or 22). A third of Alaska lies within the Arctic Circle, the only true polar region in the state.
No camping fee. Watch for bears! Many people enjoy staying here so they can say we spent the night on the Arctic Circle! and we did it as well after an amazing barbecue.

Leave everything and wander” is the result of Sara Bertagnolli’s and Luca Sguazzini’s desire to join their own skills and realize a dream: that of traveling, leaving the certainties and securities of everyday life behind.
After university Sara achieved high-level professional goals in the field of management and became the personal assistant to the fashion designer Philipp Plein.
Luca has been traveling a lot since he was a child and the last year he gained notoriety for his participation in the Italian version of “Dancing with the stars”; he has more than 138k followers on Instagram and 50k on Facebook.
They have decided to join forces and to tell a life out of the ordinary on social networks. The plan is to travel through Canada, Alaska and, in a second moment, United States, Messico and South America and to share the trip’s photos and videos on Youtube, Facebook and Instagram, giving to everyone the possibility to experience the “wander-spirit”.
Traveling without temporal or spatial limits will give Sara and Luca the possibility to entangle their story with that of people they will meet on the road and to discover new cultures, visiting also the places which are not famous, the ones which often have the biggest surprises in store.
The start-up budget will be limited in order to demonstrate that – also without great economical resources – everything is possible if you put the work in and involve as many people as possible.
