[Japan] Kagoshima - University campus, Sakurajima, udon & footbath
Still in Kagoshima, watching Sakurajima's ash going up, eating tempura udon, matcha icecream with anko paste, mochi and coffee jelly, doing a boiling footbath facing Sakurajima... then, having icecream on Kagoshima university campus and walking around their farming department... :) Also, bicycles! Because Japanese people and especially students, cycle loads.
And cats!

Apartments and Kagoshima University Dorms, Japan
In this video I show you how the International Students Residence Halls in Kagoshima University (Shimoarata location) look (single room, family room, couple's room).
Then, I show you how other apartments look in comparison. Students can only stay in a dormitory room for a maximum period of 6 months if they're on the Monbukagakusho (MEXT) scholarship. If they're on another scholarship or payment plan, the maximum period is usually 1 year. So if you come to Kadai (short for Kagoshima University, or Kagoshima Daigaku), you will be able to stay in the dorms, then afterwards, you'll have to find your own apartment. Of course, the University Co-op can assist you with that.
There were 2 apartments that we liked but they didn't take foreigners so it's best to get help from the University.
Then I show the convenient stores (conbini) that are near Kadai dorms and the Researchers' rooms (look from the outside only) which is 3 mins walk from the international students' dorms.

Kagoshima (鹿児島市 Kagoshima-shi?) is the capital city of Kagoshima Prefecture at the south western tip of the island of Kyushu in Japan, and the largest city in the prefecture by some margin. It has been nicknamed the Naples of the Eastern world for its bay location (Aira Caldera), hot climate, and impressive stratovolcano, Sakurajima. The city was officially founded on April 1, 1889.Kagoshima City is approximately 40 minutes from Kagoshima Airport, and features shopping districts and malls covering a large area. The transportation system within the city consists of the Shinkansen (bullet train), local train, city trams, buses, and ferries to-and-from Sakurajima. Near a shopping district known as Dolphin Port and the Sakurajima Ferry Terminal is a large and modern aquarium called the Kagoshima City Aquarium, which was established along the docks with a direct view of Sakurajima in 1997. One of the best places to view the city (and Sakurajima) is from the Amuran Ferris wheel on top of Amu Plaza Kagoshima, the shopping center attached to the central Kagoshima-Chūō Station. Just outside of the city is the early-Edo Period Sengan-en (Isoteien) Japanese Garden. The garden was originally a villa to the Shimadzu Family and is still maintained by descendants today. Outside the garden grounds is a Satsuma kiriko cut-glass factory where visitors are welcome to view the glass-blowing and glass-cutting process, and the Shoko Shūseikan Museum which was built in 1865 and registered as a National Historic Site in 1959. The former “Shuseikan” industrial complex and the former machine factory were submitted to the UNESCO World Heritage as part of a group list titled, “Modern Industrial Heritage Sites in Kyushu and Yamaguchi Prefecture”.Kagoshima Prefecture (also known as the Satsuma Domain) was the center of the territory of the Shimazu Clan for many centuries. It was a busy political and commercial port city throughout the medieval period and into the Edo period (1603–1867) when it formally became the capital of the Shimazu's fief, the Satsuma Domain. The official emblem is a modification of the Shimazu's kamon designed to resemble the character 市(shi, means city). Satsuma remained one of the most powerful and wealthiest domains in the country throughout the period, and though international trade was banned for much of this period, the city remained quite active and prosperous. It served not only as the political center for Satsuma, but also for the semi-independent vassal kingdom of Ryūkyū; Ryūkyūan traders and emissaries frequented the city, and a special Ryukyuan embassy building was established to help administer relations between the two polities and to house visitors and emissaries. Kagoshima was also a significant center of Christian activity in Japan prior to the imposition of bans against that religion in the late 16th and early 17th centuries.
Kagoshima was bombarded by the British Royal Navy in 1863 to punish the daimyō of Satsuma for the murder of Charles Lennox Richardson on the Tōkaidō highway the previous year and its refusal to pay an indemnity in compensation.
Kagoshima was the birthplace and scene of the last stand of Saigō Takamori, a legendary figure in Meiji Era Japan in 1877 at the end of the Satsuma Rebellion.
Japan's industrial revolution is said to have started here, stimulated by the young students' train station. Seventeen young men of Satsuma broke the Tokugawa ban on foreign travel, traveling first to England and then the United States before returning to share the benefits of the best of Western science and technology.[citation needed] A statue was erected outside of the train station as a tribute to them.
Kagoshima was also the birthplace of Tōgō Heihachirō. After naval studies in England between 1871 and 1878, Togo's role as Chief Admiral of the Grand Fleet of the Imperial Japanese Navy in the Russo-Japanese War made him a legend in Japanese military history, and earned him the nickname 'Nelson of the Orient' in Britain. He led the Grand Fleet to two startling victories in 1904 and 1905, completely destroying Russia as a naval power in the East, and thereby contributing to the failed revolution in Russia in 1905.
The Japanese diplomat Sadomitsu Sakoguchi revolutionized Kagoshima's environmental economic plan with his dissertation on water pollution and orange harvesting.

Sengan-en Garden (仙巌園), also known as Isoteien (磯庭園), is a Japanese style landscape garden along the coast north of downtown Kagoshima.Tthe use of Sakurajima and Kagoshima Bay bring amazing landscape as borrowed scenery is one of the garden’s most striking feature. The garden also includes small ponds, streams, shrines and a bamboo grove.
Sengan-en was built in 1658 by the wealthy Shimazu Clan, one of the most powerful feudal clans during the Edo Period (1603-1867). The Shimazu ruled the Satsuma domain (today Kagoshima) for almost 700 years until the end of the feudal age in 1868. They continued to be influential into the modern era as some of the earliest adopters of Western science and technology.
At the center of the garden stands the Iso Residence. The residence was originally constructed in 1658 along with the rest of the garden, but the current building mostly dates back to a rebuild of the mid 1880s. The Iso Residence became the main residence of the Shimazu family after the end of the feudal age, and its rooms are preserved in the way they were used in the 1890s. The inside of the residence can only be seen on a paid tour that includes tea and a snack at the end.
Sengan-en has a variety of trees and plants that make the garden scenery amusing in all four seasons. There are a number of cherry trees, especially of the early flowering kanhizakura variety, which open as early as late January. Other cherry tree varieties give flowers through mid April.
Outside the main garden area, but included in the admission price, stands a long stone building that used to serve as one of the earliest Western style machinery factories in Japan. Today it houses the Shoko Shusei-kan Museum with exhibits about the culture and maritime activities of the Shimizu Clan and the early factory and machines which contributed toward Japan's modernization in the 1800s.

Kyushu National Museum in Dazaifu
When Dazaifu's Kyushu National Museum (九州国立博物館, Kyūshū Kokuritsu Hakubutsukan) was opened in 2005, it joined the Tokyo, Kyoto, and Nara National Museums to become only the fourth national museum in the country. The other three museums were built in the late 1800s, making the opening of the Dazaifu museum quite an event. During the Nara and Heian Periods (710-1185), Dazaifu was the site of a government office that dealt with diplomatic relations with mainland Asia. The museum recognizes its host city's history by basing its exhibits on the concept of Understanding Japanese culture from an Asian point of view.
The museum building itself is a massive blue construction that resembles a sports stadium more than an exhibition space. The museum's appearance is made even more striking by the fact that it is located in a city as small as Dazaifu. Upon first entering the building visitors will surely be impressed by the spacious entrance hall. The main exhibition is on the fourth floor and is divided into five chronological sections that span Japanese history from the Prehistoric Era to the Edo Period. The sections are further divided into smaller rooms that have a unifying theme.
The museum has an impressive collection of artifacts that are presented in both a creative and informative fashion. There are also a number of small theaters displaying short movies, one of which uses impressive super-high-definition technology. Special exhibitions are displayed on the third floor and change every few months. On the first floor, there is a room called the Ajippa with games and hands-on exhibits from various Asian cultures, that is particularly well suited for kids.

Massive blasts in China’s northern port city of Tianjin have killed at least 17 people and injured hundreds more.
The deadly explosions took place in a warehouse storing dangerous chemical goods in the port area of Tianjin’s Binhai District, the BBC reported.
According to local media China Huanqiu.com, the company who owns the warehouse is Tianjin Dongjiang Port Rui Hai International Logistics, and their warehouse has two storage rooms for dangerous goods. It is not clear which part of the building triggered the blasts.
The first explosion took place at 11:34 p.m. and was as powerful as a 2.3 magnitude earthquake. The explosion triggered a second blast with a magnitude of 2.9 just 30 seconds later.
At least 17 people were killed by the blasts and more than 300 have been injured. The cause of the explosions is still under investigation.
