The kanchi Kailasanathar temple is the oldest structure in Kanchipuram. Located in Tamil Nadu, India, it is a Hindu temple in the Dravidian architectural style. It is dedicated to the god Shiva, and is known for its historical importance. The temple was built from 685-705AD by a Rajasimha ruler of the Pallava Dynasty. The low-slung sandstone compound contains a large number of carvings, including many half-animal deities which were popular during the early Dravidian architectural period.The structure contains 58 small shrines which are dedicated to various forms of Shiva. These are built into niches on the inner face of the high compound wall of the circumambulatory passage. The temple is one the most prominent tourist attractions of the city.
The temple is located on the banks of the Vedavathi River at the western limits of the Kanchipuram. It faces east. Its location, demarcated according to the religious faiths, is in one of three Kanchis, the Shiva Kanchi; the other two Kanchis are, Vishnu Kanchi and Jain Kanchi. It is 75 kilometres (47 mi) from the Chennai, the capital city of Tamil Nadu. Kailasanathar is one of several notable temples in Kanchipuram, the others being Ekambaranatha, Kachapeshwarar, Kamakshi Amman, Kumarakottam Temple, and Varadaraja Perumal.
A circumambulatory passage, with a symbolic meaning is situated along the compound wall. In order to make the circumambulation, there is a narrow entry passage which devotees must crawl through. Seven steps must be climbed in order to reach the passage. Passing through the narrow passage is indicative of passage through life. After the circumambulation, the exit is through a pit or another narrow passage symbolic of death. It is believed that making the circumambulation round the various deities would usher the same blessings as visiting paradise. Thanks to wikipedia.

Hey guys, today,let's take a look at this ancient temple known as Kailasa Nathar temple, located in a city called Kanchipuram in South India and I am going to show you some solid evidence of how this was the model for the famous Kailasa Temple in Ellora Caves.The Kailasa Temple in Ellora Caves has baffled all experts, because the entire temple is made of one solid rock and the rock cutting technology of going from top to bottom is simply unbelievable. These 2 temples are 750 miles apart, but share some deep rooted connections.
When you look at the kailasanathar temple tower from the ground, it looks like a normal step pyramid. But when you look at it from the air, you realize that there is something strange about the design. It is not just a simple pyramid. There are 8 smaller pyramids attached from the outside to the large tower in the center. This is very different from most temples, most Hindu temples are just simple pyramids.
There is one other temple which also has smaller pyramids surrounding the larger stepped Pyramid in the center. And that is Kailasa Temple in Ellora caves. If you compare the 2 temples side by side, you can see that there is striking similarity: there is one central tower, but both these temples have smaller towers around them.
And not just a number of towers okay, both have 8 smaller towers surrounding the large central tower. This cannot be a mere coincidence.If you look at the layout of both the temples., there is One main tower, surrounded by 8 smaller towers, and then there is a chariot like structure in the front. The two temples are not identical, but the basic blueprint is the same. There is a rectangular area left around the towers for people to walk around. And in the front, at the very entrance, they both have a smaller tower with an elevated level.
There is another similarity. In my last video, I showed you that the Kailasanathar temple has 56 chambers inside the compound wall, which were used for meditation, and when I checked the plan of Kailasa temple in Ellora caves today, I am shocked because it also has 56 chambers inside the compound walls. This plan is taken directly from Wikipedia, and yes they both have 56 chambers, which were all used for meditation. We know for a fact that this cannot be a coincidence.
But this video is not just about similarities in architecture, okay? The original names of both these temples are Kailasanatha.Even though the temple in Ellora Caves is now popularly known as Kailasa temple, the original name of it, is Kailasanatha, meaning the lord of Mount Kailash.So, both temples actually have the exact same name. And the central deity is Shiva in the form of Lingam, in both temples.And what is the purpose of these 2 temples? Why were these 2 Kailasanatha temples built?
Nobody knows exactly why, but there seems to some deep rooted connection to Spirituality, to Human consciousness itself. Perhaps we could understand this by looking at the secret passages in these 2 temples. Both temples are designed with mysterious tunnels.In the Kailasa temple at Ellora Caves, there are some deep tunnels and at the end of them, there are rectangular holes cut at the very bottom.Some of them even go underground, but all these holes are impossible to crawl through, because they are too small for human beings.
In Kailasanathar temple in South India, there are 2 tunnels which also have rectangular holes at the bottom, and if you are fit, you can squeeze and crawl through these passages. One opening is called the Gate of Death and the other opening is called the Gate of Birth.Locals in Ellora Caves, believe there are similar gates in Kailasa temple as well and entering through a certain hole can take you to a different dimension.Some even claim that these portals are kept locked to prevent people from accessing them., because they contain the secret to rebirth and immortality.
Even though we are not able to fully understand the purpose of the passages, the fact that both these temples were designed with small rectangular tunnels, is quite intriguing.
Now, let's take a look at the carvings in the walls of both temples. This is the Kailsanathar temple and you can see gigantic carvings of Shiva, adorning the walls. Each one tells a specific story of Shiva, here you can see him coming out of a Lingam.This is from the Kailasa Temple at Ellora Caves, telling the same story on its walls. Here is a dancing Shiva in Kailasa Temple at Ellora caves, and here is a very similar carving of Dancing Shiva in Kailasanathar temple. So, it is crystal clear that one temple inspired the other temple, one temple was used a model for the other temple. So which one was built first?

Hey guys, today we are going to look at the Kailasa Nathar temple in South India, some consider this as a model of the world-famous Kailasa Temple in Ellora Caves. Some even consider this as the origin of all temples and even the origin of spirituality. I will show you this entire temple in my next video, but in this video I want to show you the secrets of Spirituality hidden in this temple.
So we have a lot of these relief carvings here, and I am going to show you this one, right? Your eyes are automatically going to these central figures, this is a fantastic story. It is a story between Shiva and Arjuna. And I hope you know the story, and you have enjoyed the story, but what are you going to do next? Your eyes are naturally going to go to these animals known as Yalis. Now, look at their hands. Look at what their hands are doing. One Yali's hand is pointing this side, and the other Yali's hand is pointing this side. Of course, this is very interesting to me. So you have enjoyed this carving, you have enjoyed this temple, what are you going to do now? This is not just about devotion, the lions are telling you to go either this way.. inside.. Let us see what is inside. Here. So you can see there is a place for one person to sit. and this is an isolate place so.. nobody can be looking at you from outside. So it is a perfect site for meditation. Now, let's go and see what's there on the other side. Because this Yali is showing this way. Here.. you have another perfect place to meditate like this. Now this is what the Yalis are telling us. It is not just about devotion, it is about finding enlightenment. But there is another interesting thing here. Just pay attention to the sound. Aum.. Aum... Aum... Aum.. There is clear resonance echoing when you chant from these chambers. This is how monks used this temple.
If you sit inside these chambers and chant, you can experience a strange resonance not only in sound, but also the vibrations of your mind and body. There is not just one or 2 chambers like this, there are a total of 56 chambers like this, in this temple. Ancient monks used to come in groups and meditate in these chambers. I have visited this temple many many times, and believe it or not, this meditation practice still goes on today. If you come very early in the morning, or if you stay at odd hours, you can see some monks coming and meditating here. Some even have specific chambers which they use repeatedly.
So you can see how, by following the signs of this animal, known as Yali ,we can get a lot of information. Remember, I showed you the Yalis from another temple In Darasuram. I showed you how the tails and trunks of Yalis made us understand something spectacular. So, if you go to ancient Indian temples, please pay attention to Yalis.

Hey guys, today we are going to look at the highlights of the Kailasanathar temple at Kanchipuram. This is an ancient temple, archeologists estimate it was built around 700 A.D, about 1300 years ago, although locals believe that it is much older. People here will tell you that this is the origin of all Hindu temples, the very first Hindu temple in the world.
Even before we enter the temple, we realize that the temple has some fascinating features. What is this giant square outside the temple compounds? It is a large bull, known as Nandhi, the mount of Lord Shiva, and he is placed outside, directly in front of the temple entrance. It is very rare to see Nandhis outside Hindu Temples, this is a sign that this is a very very ancient temple. Remember I showed you the largest monolithic bull in the world. That is in the ancient Lepakshi Temple, yes that one is also placed outside the temple.
And in one corner, there is the temple tank. This temple tank was created to store water, and is designed like an inverted pyramid. Today it is empty, but more than a thousand years ago, it was considered the source of providing sacred, healing waters.It is locked, and we cannot go inside today, it is kept locked because vandals are trying to destroy it.
Just outside the temple, there are several beautiful lingams, each placed in its own chamber. This one is the multifaceted lingam, it is always mesmerizing to watch this lingam. This onehas 8 sides, and the lingam inside the main chamber of the temple has 16 sides.Behind the lingam, you can see a carving showing Shiva, his wife and a baby. Remember, I showed you an identical carving in the Shore Temple at Mahabalipuram, and I had asked who this baby was, since Shiva has 2 sons Ganesha and Kartikeya.I had put this question to you and Most of you had answered that the carving shows Kartikeya, since the baby is shown with a human face, and we all know Ganesha has the head of an elephant. But here is the interesting information, if you ask the locals around both these temples, they will tell you that this baby is Ganesha.Ancient texts tell us that Ganesha was born with a regular head, and then he lost his head and afterwards an elephant's head was transplanted on his body.Locals believe that this temple was built before Ganesha lost his head, which is why these carvings show Ganesha with a regular face. There is also another templeabout 150 miles from here called Adhi Vinayagar temple. It also shows Ganesha in a humanoid form, not with an elephant's face. This temple is also said to be built before Ganesha lost his original head. Sorry, I sidetracked to a long story.
Now, there are several lingams like this.. and here is an empty pit where a lingam used to be in place, and now it is gone. But here is a lingam, seemingly made of artificial stones or geopolymers.
There are a series of these lingams and they are joined with the base, or the Yoni using some kind of glue.What is the reason for these multiple lingams placed outside the Kailasanathar temple? They were used as models to teach people, how to create different types of lingams. Remember I told you that even the Kailasa Temple at Ellora Caves, could have been modeled after this temple.
Okay, so let us enter the temple now and see what's inside.The temple is known for its brilliant carvings of Shiva, the details and the features you see here, cannot be seen anywhere else.
Each carving tells us a different story. Look at this gigantic carving, the central figure with a mysterious smile is Lord Shiva. Shiva is a giant when compared to human beings. Look how is wearing very little clothes, but has shoes,foot wear with shock absorbers.

Kailasanathar temple is one of the oldest temples in Kanchipuram. Main deity Kailasanathar of this temple is Lord shiva in linga form. Kailasanathar temple stood one of the architecture wonder in Indian history. Devotees can see 58 different best sculpted Shiva shrines around the temple.
The temple construction was stated in the year 685 AD by pallava king Rajashimha and completed around 705 AD. Many expert sculptures and other workers participated in building up the great temple. One the specialty of the temple is the sand stone compound. In the corridor around the temple we can see perfect and fine sculpted shrines of lord Shiva. The temple is very much famous for outstanding limestone art and sculpture.
According to ancient Indian mythology it is believed that Romasamaharshi penance Lord Shiva for salvation after getting suggestion from his guru sage Agastya. Lord shiva appeared to Sage romasa and said that the Circumambulatory passage inside the kailasanathar temple grants salvation for human beings. Still many devotees enter into the narrow passage behind the Shiva linga to get salvation.Devotees should enter form the left side of the passage and need to crawl around the passage and exits from right side.

The Kailasanathar temple's unique feature is the 58 (sub-shrines) that are situated around this temple. 64 aspects of Lord Shiva is found all around the temple sub shrines, Of all the temples in India, no other edifice has been so elaborately filled with all the 64 aspects of Lord Shiva. The temple is unique in its architecture and is viewed more as an architectural wonder than as a holy place. Hence, it is never crowded with locals. Mostly filled with foreign tourists.
Attractions • A unique feature of the temple is that there is a small and narrow passage around the presiding deity. Its quite a task to crawl around it. It is widely believed that crawling through the passage enables one to attain Moksha.

A quick and short tour of Kailasanathar temple which is situated in Kanchipuram, Tamil Nadu in South India. It is a famous temple of historic importance built by the Pallava kings in the 8th Century. It is the first temple structure built in Kanchipuram and one of the first temples to be built using sandstone. The temple has lot of carvings and sculptures made of sandstone. The temple is maintained by Archeological Survey of India. It is visited by tourists throughout the year.
When we visited the temple, it was late evening and it quickly became dark. I was not able to cover all sculptures to do justice to the architectural beauty of the temple.

The Kailasanathar Temple (meaning:“Lord of the Cosmic Mountain”), is built in the tradition of Smartha worship of Shiva, Vishnu, Devi, Surya (Sun), Ganesha and Kartikeya, in Hinduism, a practice which replaced the Buddhism.
Temple construction is credited to the Pallava dynasty, who had established their kingdom with Kanchipuram (also known as Kanchi or Shiva Vishnu Kanchi) as the capital city, considered one of the seven sacred cities under Hinduism. There was an interregnum when the Chalukya rulers defeated the Pallavas and occupied Kanchipuram. However, the Pallavas regained their territory and started expanding their capital city of Kanchipuram and built many temples of great magnificence. The only temple of this period which is extant is the Kailsahanathar Temple.
The temple was built during 685-705AD. It is the first structural temple built in South India by Narasimhavarman II (Rajasimha), and who is also known as Rajasimha Pallaveswaram. His son, Mahendravarman III, completed the front façade and the gopuram (tower). Prior temples were either built of wood or hewn into rock faces in caves or on boulders, as seen in Mahabalipuram. The Kailasanathar temple became the trend setter for other similar temples in South India. According to local belief, the temple was a safe sanctuary for the rulers of the kingdom during wars. A secret tunnel, built by the kings, was used as an escape route and is still visible.
Currently, Kanchi Kailasanathar Temple is maintained by Archaeological Survey of India.
