Manimahesh Kailash Yatra Trek ( Also known as Chamba Kailash Yatra Trek ) in Himachal Pradesh. One of the five abodes of Lord Shiva. This is a very slow paced and detailed account of my journey there.

According to shashtras(Scriptures) there are 5 Kailash parvats and Mani Mahesh is one of the 5 kailash parvats it is also known as bharmourie kailash
,Kailash Manimahesh is located in Chamba a district of Himachal pradesh a State of India to visit kailash one has to come to chamba town most of the people those are not from Himachal they come to Pathankot in Punjab first by bus, train or other transportation and then they head to Chamba then from Chamba one has to go to Bharmour town which is about 63Km from Chamba and then from Bharmour to Harsar,
Harsar is a place from where Manimahesh parvat climbing or tracking begins it is about a 13Km climb to reach Manimahesh but it is not an easy to do task because rout is not like a regular road as you see in Vaishno devi but it is like all not easy to walk road in some places there are lot of rocks and steep climbs for a first time visitor it may take 15 -18 hours to reach Manimahesh so to begin the climb one must make sure to start climbing early in the morning like 4 am to 5am so that by after noon you would cover more then half the path or you wont be able to make on day one

One can visit Manimahesh any time but winters are not preffered as all the paths and mountains will be covered by snow and winters would be very harsh, let me tell you even in the months of June - September one requires a heavy jacket for protection from cold so imagine the situation in winters.

Best time to visit Manimahesh is between the parv from Krishna Janmaashtmi to Raadha ashtmi when belivers of lord Shiva come to Manimahesh for holy bath in the bone freezing cold water of Manimahesh Sarovar (Lake) and to see the glorious and uncomparable to any thing the mani of Lord SHIVA every Year

This yaatra has one condition made by lord SHIVA himself
The one who visits Manimahesh must visit Mata Bharmani temple it is a temple in the town of Bharmour at the begining of the yaatra else your pilgrimage will be considered as an incomplete, choice is yours.

Manimahesh Lake is a high altitude lake situated close to the Manimahesh Kailash Peak in the Pir Panjal Range of the Himalayas, in the Bharmour subdivision of Chamba district of the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh. Manimahesh Kailash Peak stands high above the Manimahesh Lake, which is believed to be the home of Lord Shiva. It is situated in the Bharmour subdivision of the Chamba District in Himachal Pradesh. The Manimahesh Lake is at the base of the Kailash peak which is at 18,547 ft and both are admired by the people of Himachal Pradesh. It is blessed by the goddess Kali and protected by Lord Shiva. Thousands of tourists journey here to take a dip in its sacred waters of Manimahesh on the fifteenth day following the Janamashtami festival. A huge fair is held every year at this lake in the month of August or September.

Devotees take pictures of Manimahesh Kailash peak during the yatra. They also offer holy water to the Shivling of Lord Shiva.

The Manimahesh Kailash Peak, moreover known as Chamba Kailash, which stands towering high over the Manimahesh Lake, is believed to be the abode of Lord Shiva, the (Hindu deity). Kharamukh to Bharmour Highway(Chamba-Manimahesh) Himachal Pradesh

Bharmour is beautiful town surrounded by high lush green mountains located at a distance of 62 km from Chamba and 102 km from Dalhousie which is another popular tourism destination of utmost importance in Himachal Pradesh. Bharmour is often referred as the land of Shiva because of belief that lord Shiva resides at mountain Kailash which is located in this area. Bharmour was also Known as Brahmpur in the 6th century and was the seat of power of Chamba state for nearly 400 years till AD 920, when a new capital was founded at Chamba by Raja Sahil Varman. Bharmour is popular for its natural beauty, for Chaurasi temples and Manimahesh. Chaurasi Temples stand on a level area in center of Bharmour and are named after the 84 Siddhas who are believed to have meditated in here over thousand years ago.

शिमला। हिमालय की गोद में विराजमान श्रीखंड महादेव के दर्शन करना आसान नहीं है। यह जिला कुल्लू के आनी में है लेकिन निरमंड से होकर ही यहां पहुंचा जा सकता है। कुल्लू जिला के आनी में यह इलाका है। निरमंड से श्रीखंड यात्रा के लिए 25 किलोमीटर की सीधी चढ़ाई श्रद्धालुओं के लिए किसी अग्निपरीक्षा से कम नहीं होती है। कई बार तो इस यात्रा के दौरान श्रद्धालुओं की मौत भी हो चुकी है।

चढ़नी पड़ती है 18570 फीट की ऊंचाई

आमतौर पर कैलाश मानसरोवर की यात्रा सबसे कठिन व दुर्गम धार्मिक यात्रा मानी जाती है। उसके बाद किसी का नंबर आता है तो वो है अमरनाथ यात्रा, लेकिन हिमाचल प्रदेश के श्रीखंड महादेव की यात्रा अमरनाथ यात्रा से भी ज्यादा कठिन है। अमरनाथ यात्रा में जहां लोगों को करीब 14000 फीट की चढ़ाई करनी पड़ती है तो श्रीखंड महादेव के दर्शन के लिए 18570 फीट की ऊचाई पर चढ़ना होता है और यहां पहुंचने का रास्ता भी बेहद खतरनाक है। अमरनाथ से भी कठिन श्री खंड महादेव की इस यात्रा में रूह कांप जाती है।


Shrikhand Mahadev- A heavenly Himalayan trek
Shrikhand Mahadev, one of the toughest pilgrimages in India, is known for Lord Shiva in Hindu Mythology. It also makes a thrilling and adventurous trek in Himachal. It takes you amidst the lavish and beautiful setup of mighty Himalayas to the top of the Shrikhand Mahadev peak at a height of 16900 feet above the sea level. This holy destination is situated Kullu district of Himachal Pradesh.

What you should know about the trek/pilgrimage
June and July are the most ideal months to take up Shrikhand Mahadev trek. Though it’s summer time, one should always be prepared to face untimely rain and even snow fall. In the peak pilgrimage time, it is very easy to find food, water and sleeping bags. Still it is advisable that you take your own sleeping bags and some of other daily need supplies with you, but at the same time try to keep your luggage very light. Do not over-pack, but make sure you carry water bottles, glucose sachets, warm clothing, rainwear, flashlights and dry fruits.

This is a 35 km harsh track to trek and not meant for physically ill and weak hearted. The trek ascends through the alpine meadows to a 72 feet pinnacle of rock called Shivlinga. The yatra takes 10 days to complete and is organized by the Government of Himachal Pradesh. So, before you start your yatra, the registration becomes mandatory.

On 28th evening, still some time to go for sunset, it was worthwhile mounting the Handycam on tripod and placing it on the verandah of the hotel room overlooking the snow clad mountains. On a near cloud free evening sky, mountains Kinnaur Kailash ( 21,325' ), Jorkanden ( 21,242' ) and Raldang ( 18,042' ) looked very imposing. Besides the massive Himalayan peaks, the much revered and of significance is Shivling - a stone formation about 70' in height but visible to naked eye as a small entity. The high zooming and focusing at Shivling makes the visual lose its clarity. With sunset approaching, the Kinner Kailash & Jorkanden bathed in light pink hue became more color saturated as the time wore on. The spectacle lasted barely for 6 minutes and results were immensely satisfactory. Enthused, it was time to plan for the next morning's sunrise view from same position. Roadtrip - The world's most dangerous road - Pangi via Kishtwar

On 1st November, we started our journey from Shimla to the remote Pangi valley in Chamba.

CORRECTION - As pointed out by our viewer Aman Sharma, Kishtwar is in Jammu Division and not in Kashmir Division. So we apologise for writing Kashmir.

The usual route via Saach pass was closed for the season, so we had to take the more longer and more dangerous route via Kishtwar, Jammu and Kashmir.

There is a 6km patch near Tyari that is so dangerous and rough, that you can't take a small car on it. It is so narrow that no busses and trucks drive on this road. The road after Tyari is so rough, that it took us 4 hours to cover the last 30kms.

Despite the dangerous patch the road crosses through some of the most untouched and beautiful parts of Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal.

Day 1 - We drove from Shimla to Kihar in Chamba district of Himachal Pradesh.
Day 2 - We started early and reached Killar via the most dangerous road we ever drove through.
Day 3 - Drove to the village Hudan Bhatori at 3400m.
Day 4 - It started snowing in Pangi so we drove back via Pangi to Doda.
Day 5 - We started back to Chamba, but Padri jot was blocked by 2ft of snow. So we talked the JCB people of PWD to clear the road for us.

Air : Nearest airport is at Gaggal in Kangra (170 kms from Chamba).

Road : Hadsar is From 78 kms away from Chamba by road. Buses, taxis and coaches regularly plying from Chandigarh and Delhi. Dalhousie is 563 km from Delhi and 353 km from Chandigarh.

Bharmani Mata Temple complex is at the top of a hill, where one can get a good view of the valley surrounding the ridge on which it was built. Bharmani Goddess is a significant deity of Bharmour. It is believed that the pilgrimage to Manimahesh, which is dedicated to Lord Shiva, would be incomplete without a visit to the goddess' temple first.
There is a holy pool at Bharmani Devi's temple where pilgrims have to take a dip as a customary ritual before they proceed to Manimahesh to pay their respects to Lord Shiva. There are several water streams in the temple which constitute most of the town's water supply.

How to reach Bharmour
By Air: The closest airport is at Gaggal (Kangra) near Dharamshala which is 200 km from Bharmour. Buses and Taxis are available.
By Rail: The nearest railway terminal is situated in Chakki Bank railway station (CHKB) and Pathankot railway station (PTK) which are at distance of 180kms from Bharmour. Taxis and Buses are available.
By Road: Bharmour is well connected by roads with main cities of Himachal Pradesh like Chamba, Kangra, Dalhousie, Dharamshala, etc. It is 65 kms from the city of Chamba and approximately 214kms from Kangra at a height of 2195mts above sea level. Taxis and Buses are available.
