Kajaani is a town and municipality in Finland. It is the center and capital of the Kainuu region. It is located southeast of Oulujärvi , which drains to the Gulf of Bothnia along the Oulujoki . As of 31 August 2018, it had a population of 37,039.The town began in the 17th century, fuelled by the growth of the tar industry. It succumbed to Russian forces during the Greater Wrath of the 18th century, who ruined the Kajaani Castle in 1716. Today, the local economy is driven by mainly the sawmill, lumber and paper industries, although UPM Kymmene's Kajaani paper mill, the main employer from 1907 until 2008, has now closed. Kajaani Church was built in 1896 in the Neo-Gothic style by architect Jac Ahrenberg, replacing an earlier church. Kajaani Town Theatre was established in 1969. Kajaani is home to two football clubs, AC Kajaani and Kajaanin Haka, and ice hockey team Hokki. Kajaani University of Applied Sciences was established in 1992.

Kajaani castle ruins are probably the one and only drive in historical monument in the hole world! The ugly concrete bridge over the castle is a heritage from 1930's. The designer of the bridge did very terrible job, because the bridge doesn't fit in the style and structure of such a historical environment. Well, 81 years ago, other things were perhaps more important than architecture.

A lynx ran over the highway in Kajaani

I was driving (03/27/2017) on the road E63, highway 5 to north from Kajaani (about 13 km), when I saw a lynx running over the highway between the junctions of roads: Salmijärventie and Häikiönmäentie. A lynx ran toward railway and road Kulunnantie. If you live near and have a domestic cat, it would be very wise to keep a cat inside of a house! A lynx will kill a cat in a nature!

Kainuun Ämmänkosken keskellä sijaitsee Kajaanin linnan rauniot, jotka ovat peräisin uudesta linnasta, jota alettiin rakentamaan 1604 ja joka tuhoutui 1716 satavuotisen olemassaolonsa jälkeen. Perimätiedot kertovat paikalla sijainneen vanhemman linnan, jonka ristiretkeläiset tuhosivat 1248 työntyessään kohti Euroopan viimeisiä pakanoiden asuttavia asutuskeskuksia.

The Kajaani castle was built by the Swedish on a little island in the middle of fast-flowing Kajaani river during the 17th century (1605-1666). It served as a fortress and the administrative center of a vast and sparsely populated region, with the town of Kajaani (founded 1651) on the southern bank of the river . The castle was sieged by Russians in 1712 an 1715 and it was finally blown up in March 1716. Although it returned to Sweden in 1721, it was never rebuilt. Today the castle lies under a wide bridge crossing the river, and the once mighty rapids are dammed and producing power to the surrounding city. Nevertheless, on a gloomy evening with fresh fallen snow, the castle ruin still looks quite impressive.
