The 100-year-old Carillon of Kallio Church, Helsinki, Finland
Kallio Church was inaugurated on 1st of September, 1912. Clockwork was made by Bokelmann & Kuhlo in Germany, seven bells were casted at the Glockengießerei (Bell Foundry) Franz Schilling und Söhne in Apolda, Germany. Tune for the carillon was composed by Jean Sibelius. Later Sibelius used the tune also for a composition for mixed voice choir. Carillon plays this tune every day at noon and at 18 o'clock, which makes it the most played composition of Sibelius. This video (filmed in HD) celebrates the 100 years old Kallio Church and its Carillon!
Kallion kirkko vihittiin käyttöön 1. syyskuuta 1912. Kellopeli tilattiin Saksasta, koneiston valmisti Bokelmann & Kuhlo, kellopelin seitsemän kelloa valoi kuuluisa kellovalimo Franz Schilling und Söhne Apoldassa, Saksassa. Kellomelodian sävelsi Jean Sibelius. Sibelius sävelsi myöhemmin myös melodiaan pohjautuvan sekakuoroteoksen. Kellokoneisto soittaa melodiaa joka päivä kello 12 ja kello 18 – kyseessä lienee Sibeliuksen soitetuin sävellys. Kallio Church (Finnish: Kallion kirkko) is a Lutheran church in the Kallio district of Helsinki, Finland.
The church has a height of 65 metres, and its cross is 94 metres above sea level.
The Estonian coastline can be seen from the tower. The church is on a hill, and it forms the northern end point of a 2.5 km long street axis made up of three streets, Kopernikuksenkatu, Siltasaarenkatu, and Unioninkatu.
It was designed by Lars Sonck and represents National Romanticism with Art Nouveau influences.
The National Romantic style manifests itself in the use of traditional Finnish materials and in the massive body of the church, as well as in nature-inspired colours and decorative motifs.
The grey granite church, completed in 1912, is one of Helsinki's most readily identifiable landmarks.
