Mangadu மாங்காடு Kamakshi Amman
Mangadu மாங்காடு Kamakshi Amman Temple View 25th November 2013. Mangadu is a town in Kancheepuram district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Literally meaning a mango forest, it is a south-western suburb of Chennai. It is about 20 km from the city. The town is famous for its Kamakshi temple. It is believed that the great Hindu saint Adi Sankara visited this temple and installed the Ardha Mahameru Yantra. Mangadu is close to Poonamalle, a major suburb of Chennai city. Big factions of the population live in the capital of Tamil Nadu, Chennai. Many of these people return to Mangadu once every year or so to give offerings to the local temple.Song by Unni Krishnan.

Meenakshi Temple of Madurai - Frank & Jen Travel India 25
The Meenakshi Amman temple complex in Madurai, Tamil Nadu, is an awe-inspiring sight to behold, and one of the finest examples of a south Indian Hindu temple. Soaring to over 50 meters (150 feet) high, the 14 gateway towers, or gopurams, are stunningly decorated with thousands of full color carvings. We also manage to get a look inside the temple, where there is a real elephant!

Kanchipuram - A Temple City, Part 1
Located just 70 kms from Chennai, Kanchipuram is the must see tourist destination. Known as a city of thousand temples, Kanchi is one of the oldest cities in South India, and was a city of learning for both Tamil and Sanskrit. The Sanskrit term nagareshu Kanchi means that Kanchi was the best amongst the cities of medieval India. It was during the reign of Pallava dynasty, from the 4th to the 9th centuries that Kanchi attained its limelight. The city served as the Pallava capital, and many of the known temples were built during their reign. This documentary film contains the important temples of Kanchi.
KANCHIPURAM TEMPLE Varadharaja Perumal Temple
Varadharaja Perumal Temple or Hastagiri or Attiyuran is a Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu located in the holy city of Kanchipuram, Tamil Nadu, India. It is one of the Divya Desams, the 108 temples of Vishnu believed to have been visited by the 12 poet saints, or Alwars. It is located in a suburb of Kanchipuram known as the Vishnu Kanchi that is a home for many famous Vishnu temples. One of the greatest Hindu scholars of Vaishnava VisishtAdvaita philosophy, Ramanuja is believed to have resided in this temple. The temple along with Ekambareswarar Temple and Kamakshi Amman Temple in Kanchipuram is popularly known as Mumurtivasam (abode of trio) while Srirangam is referred to as ‘ The Koil’ (meaning: temple) and Tirupathi as the ‘Malai’ (Meaning: hill). Among the Divya Desams, Kanchipuram Varadaraja Perumal temple is known as the ‘Perumal Koil’. This is one of the most sacred places for Vaishnavites. There is another famous temple of Varadarajaswamy in Kurmai, of Palamaner mandal in Chittoor District of Andhra Pradesh, called the Kurma Varadaraja Swamy Temple.
There is a belief that the temple was first built by the Pallava king Nandivarman II.Varadharaja Perumal Temple was originally built by the Cholas in 1053[7] and it was expanded during the reigns of the great Chola kings Kulottunga Chola I and Vikrama Chola. In the 14th century another wall and a gopura was built by the later Chola kings. When a Mughul invasion was expected in 1688, the main image of the deity was sent to Udayarpalayam, now part of Tiruchirapalli District.[8] It was brought back with greater difficulty after the involvement of local preceptor who enlisted the services of general Todarmal[disambiguation needed]. Robert Clive, the British general during the colonial period visited the Garuda seva festival and presented a valuable necklace (now termed Clive Maharkandi), which is adorned during a special occasion every year.[8] There are inscriptions dated 1532 CE (record 544 of 1919) indicating the gift of number of villages made by Achutaraya.[9] Vira Narasingaraya Saluva Nayaka who was directed by Achutaraya broke the royal order by giving more lands to Ekambaranathar temple than the Varadaraja Swamy temple against the instruction of an equal gift to either of the temples. Achutaraya on hearing this equally distributed the lands to both the temples. In modern times, the administration is carried out by Hindu Religious and Endowment of the Government of Tamil Nadu.

Meenakshi Temple Madurai India, Ancient Hindu Architecture *HD*
Madurai, Tamilnadu, India : Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple or Meenakshi Amman Temple or Tiru-alavai is a historic Hindu temple located in the south side of river Vaigai in the temple city of Madurai. It is dedicated to Parvati who is known as Meenakshi and her consort, Shiva, named here as Sundareswarar (beautiful deity). The temple forms the heart and lifeline of the 2500 year old city of Madurai. The complex houses 14 gopurams (gateway towers) ranging from 45-50m in height, the tallest being the southern tower, 51.9 metres (170 ft) high, and two golden sculptured vimana (shrine) over sanctum of the main deities
There is an estimated 33,000 sculptures in the temple and it was in the list of top 30 nominees of the New Seven Wonders of the World.
The temple is the geographic and ritual center of the ancient city of Madurai and one of the largest temple complexes in Tamil Nadu. The temple complex is divided into a number of concentric quadrangular enclosures contained by high masonary walls. It is one of the few temples in Tamil Nadu to have four entrances facing four directions. Vishwantha Nayaka allegedly redesigned the city of Madurai in accordance with the principles laid down by Shilpa Shastras(Sanskrit: śilpa śāstra, also anglicized as silpa sastra meaning rules of architecture) relevant to urban planning. The city was laid out in the shape of square with a series of concentric streets culminating from the temple. These squares continue to retain their traditional names, Aadi, Chittirai, Avani-moola and Masi streets, corresponding to Tamil month names. Ancient Tamil classics mention that the temple was the center of the city and the streets happened to be radiating out like lotus and its petals. The temple prakarams(outer precincts of a temple) and streets accommodate an elobrate festival calendar in which dramatic processions circumabulate the shrines at varying distances from the centre. The vehicles used in processions are progressively more massive the further they travel from the centre. The complex is in around 45 acres (180,000 m2)

Top Temples in Chennai | Chennai Temples
1. The Ornate Kapaleeshwarar Temple
The Kapaleeshwarar temple is located in the Mylapore area of Chennai, which is named after Lord Shiva himself. Historically, people of this region worshipped Lord Shiva in the form of a peacock, which is called Mylai in Tamil and is the origin of this area’s name. In the Kapaleeshwarar temple, however, it is not Lord Shiva who is the star of the show. That honour has been bestowed upon his wife Parvati, who is worshipped here under the name of Karpagambal. The original temple was destroyed by the Portuguese in the 1500s and had to be rebuilt in its current location.
2. The Ancient Parthasarathy Temple
Built in the 8th century, this temple is one of the oldest temples in Chennai and has been a staple in any list that details the temples of Chennai. As might be obvious to anyone who knows some lore about Lord Krishna, this temple is named after him. In the Hindu mythological text Mahabharata, Lord Krishna acted as the charioteer for the Pandava prince Arjuna. And it is in this very role, that he recited the entirety of Bhagwada Gita, which is now one of the biggest literary exports of India. Due to structural damage, this historic temple is undergoing a huge renovation, and some parts of it are not accessible to the public. But that doesn’t mean that you should miss out of visiting this historic temple.
3. The Sacred Temple of Thyagaraja
Located in one of the longest-standing regions of Chennai, Tiruvottiyur, the Thyagaraja temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. One of the most famous temples in Chennai, this temple is also one of the biggest in the country, with about 33 acres of expanse to its credit. Consisting of four gateway towers, also known as Gopurams, it is filled with shrines to a number of deities from Hindu mythology.
4. The Rich Ashtalakshmi Temple
The word Ashtalakshmi is derived from the name of the Hindu Goddess of wealth and prosperity, Lakshmi. Ashtalakshmi means the 8 types of wealth that are desired by all devotees who worship goddess Lakshmi. Each of these types of wealth are represented as an incarnation of Goddess Lakshmi in this temple.
5. The Famous Vadapalani Andavar Temple
This temple was built in honour of Lord Muruga or Kartikeya as many Indians known him. He was the son of Lord Shiva and Mother Parvati, and the brother of Lord Ganesha. In the southern parts of India, Murugan is worshipped as the God of War.
6. The Penitent Mangadu Kamakshi Amman Temple
A very interesting myth is attached to the history of this temple. People in Chennai, and many other parts of South India, believe that this temple can aid in finding a groom for an unmarried woman. A Devi by the name of Kamakshi Amman apparently closed Lord Shiva’s third eye in a fit of playfulness and the whole world plunged into darkness.
7. The Royal(ish) Kalikambal Temple
The Kalikambal temple is located in Parry’s Corner which used to be called the George Town area of Chennai. It is yet another temple that is dedicated to the Devi Kamakshi, however, she is worshipped not as Kamakshi but as Shri Kalikambal here. It also celebrates the divinity of Lord Kamadeswarar.
8. The Gateway Adeeswar Temple
This temple sits pretty beside the Redhill lake by the Grand Trunk road which just so happens to be the road that connects Chennai to the rest of Tamil Nadu. It is for this very reason that it is also known as the “Gateway to the South”. The Jain community in India is especially fond of this shrine as it was built to honour their first god Lord Adeeswar, or Adi Bhagwan, or any of the many names that he is known by. Tirthankar Rishabhdev, which was his given name, is believed to be the person who started the religion.
9. The First-of-its-Kind Ayyappan Temple
The Ayyappan temple was the very first Ayyappan construction in the city. It was built in 1974, instantly becoming a favourite place for many devotees. A lot of the residents that lived near the Mahalingpuram Ayyappan temple used to migrate to the Sabarimala during the Mandalam Makaravillakku seasons.
10. The Standalone Shirdi Sai Baba Temple
Also, in the Mylapore area of Chennai, this sole temple for the devotees of the famous Shirdi Sai Baba stands proud! It was created by some of the biggest devotees of Sai Baba,
