Kanazawa Station (金沢駅 Kanazawa-eki) is a major railway station in Kanazawa, Ishikawa, Japan, operated by West Japan Railway Company (JR West), the private railway operator Hokuriku Railroad, and the third-sector operator IR Ishikawa Railway.
Beneath a square in front of the JR station is Hokutetsu-Kanazawa Station, the terminal of the Hokuriku Railroad Asanogawa Line.
JR Kanazawa Station is elevated above street level, featuring three island platforms with one cut-out platform (for Track 4) on the Up (Toyama) side of the middle island platform, serving seven tracks in total. A large roof covers the station building, in order to prevent train stoppages due to accumulated snow within the station.
The Hokuriku Shinkansen platforms are adjacent to the east exit, between the Motenashi Dome and the conventional tracks. The shinkansen station has two island platforms serving four tracks. At the time of its opening, it will be the terminus of the line, although, long-term plans call for the route to be extended first to Tsuruga, and eventually to Osaka.

NHK World 2015 Journeys in Japan, Daniela Shiga Kanazawa Evolving Tradition 金沢市
Kanazawa: Evolving Tradition: Toronagashi, Kenroku-en, Yuzen Guitar
The first thing you see when you get off the train at Kanazawa Station is a giant, contemporary glass structure that protects you from the elements. The Motenashi Dome or hospitality Dome is very welcoming. Then, you pass through a traditional wooden gate to enter into the city. For me, this transition came to symbolize a conduit between the new and the old. I experienced many traces of Japan's feudal era of 400 years ago, in terms of art and architecture. And I also sensed how they have evolved until today.
Due to wise leadership, Kanazawa developed as a city of art and culture. People in Kanazawa still talk proudly about this, and they mark this legacy every June with a major festival called the Hyakumangoku Matsuri. You can observe all forms of traditional entertainment here. It's a must-see! As part of this festival, citizens float more than 1000 beautifully painted lanterns down the Asano River, praying for blessings from their ancestors for peace and prosperity. In every tradition you see, be it dyeing, porcelain making, entertaining and cuisine you will discover new elements incorporated to keep traditions alive.
I was especially impressed to get a chance to know first hand how to produce Fugunoko or fermented blowfish ovaries. The family I visited has been making the delicacy for 7 generations. It takes a total of 3 years to remove poison from the blowfish. It's been made in the same way for hundreds of years, using only natural ingredients such as rice bran, rice malt, and fermented fish sauce. In their workshop, I felt as if I were traveling back to their ancestors' time. I could, literally, taste history. It is very salty yet it has a savory, oaky flavor. While it goes well with sake, I discovered that the rich flavor also goes well with western dishes, such as cream pasta or terrine. You will see some of my new recipes in the program!
You should also visit a geisha house for a sublime evening of dining and entertainment. The kind people of Kanazawa always hold an open door to anyone who wants to explore this city's beauty, tradition and history. You can see, feel and even taste the history!
From Kaga Yuzen silk dyeing and Kutani porcelain to teahouses, traditional culture dating back more than 400 years is alive in Kanazawa City, Ishikawa Prefecture. Every June, the Hyakumangoku Matsuri Festival takes place in honor of Maeda Toshiie, the first lord of the Kaga domain, who laid the foundation of Kanazawa's rich culture. The festival features various traditional performances passed down for generations, including taiko drumming, a ritual lion dance and Kagatobi, an acrobatic spectacle of firemen atop ladders. Traveler Daniela Shiga meets many people who are upholding Kanazawa's rich traditions while also introducing innovation.
She visits a family that has been making a rare local delicacy known as Fugunoko, which is blowfish ovaries preserved in rice bran. She tries her hand at the preserving work, using methods that go back nearly 200 years. As a food researcher, Daniela has fun developing new recipes that incorporate this traditional food. Kanazawa is a popular tourist destination. Next spring, it will become even more accessible with the launch of the new Hokuriku Shinkansen bullet train.
Kenroku-en Garden
True to its name meaning possessing 6 different types of beauty, this is considered one of the 3 most beautiful gardens in Japan. From Kanazawa Station, it takes about 10 minutes by bus.
Kaga Yuzen Traditional Industry Center
Visitors can familiarize themselves with the world of Kaga Yuzen through exhibits of yuzen pieces and demonstration by master artisans. Rental and fitting of authentic Kaga Yuzen kimono are also available. (Fee: 2,000 yen to 6,000 yen)

Kaikaro, Hagashi Chaya District (Geisha House)
During the day, visitors are welcome inside this teahouse where sweets are served. At night, it accepts only regular customers or those with an introduction. Several times a year, it hosts a special party to which the general public is invited.
Omi-cho Market
Dubbed the kitchen of Kanazawa, this market offers fresh seafood, which many visitors choose to taste on the spot. Fugunoko is available at many stalls here.

Fountain at Kanazawa Station
A brief clip of Kanazawa Station and the fountain located in Ishikawa Prefecture.
Omicho Market, Kanazawa City
Omicho Market is located around the JR Kanazawa Station area and is said to be established over two hundred years ago. This market is specially known for it's prepared and raw seafood. Freshly caught various types of fish and crustaceans from the Sea of Japan end up at this market. This market is popular with both locals and tourists. This market is not as big as the Tsukiji Market in Tokyo but is definitely as charming as Tsukiji Market.
My Adventures in Japan, May 2014: Kanazawa Train Station
Kanazawa Station is one of the most distinct and beautiful train stations in Japan. The station offers a modern take on traditional Japanese architecture, combining a huge wooden temple gate with shimmering expanses of glass and steel. Digital clocks may be the norm these days, but the Kanazawa Station Fountain Clock is a delightfully liquid variation on the theme. It is located in full public view just outside the impressive gate to the city's train station. It's more than just a clock - the adjustable valving that forms the clock's numeric digits is also used to spell out text messages in both Japanese and English. There are many hotels, a few big shopping centers and many shops around the Kanazawa Station.
