???? Kandy Food Market - Food Travel Blog - Sri Lanka Vlog Street Food - Meat Fish Vegetable Markets - Kandy market is set just by the bus station in the centre of the city. It is housed in a maze of market stalls around a central building with a green area and pond in the middle. This market does have a few units of clothing and tourist type things but is mainly based on the local market buying their fresh meat, fish, fruit, vegetables and spices. Worth a look if you are into seeing local produce but for sure there are better places around if you just want clothing and tourist bits. For us as foodies we love it. There are and you will here on the video crows or ravens all over the place in Kandy and they like to swoop down and grab food from the market sellers. A busy local market full of great characters and super vibes. Pol sambola (coconut sambol) is a traditional Sri Lankan dish made from coconut, mostly used as an accompaniment with rice, string hoppers, hoppers, and many more meals. Sri Lankan cuisine has been shaped by many historical, cultural, and other factors. Foreign traders who brought new food items; influences from Indonesian cuisine and the cuisine of Southern India have all helped to shape Sri Lankan cuisine. Today, some of the staples of Sri Lankan cuisine are rice, coconut, and spices. The latter are used due to Sri Lanka's history as a spice producer and trading post over several centuries. Kottu is a spicy stir-fry of shredded roti bread with vegetables. Optional ingredients include eggs, meat, or cheese. It was invented in Batticaloa and literally means 'chopped roti' in Tamil. Hoppers (appam) are based on a fermented batter, usually made of rice flour and coconut milk with spices. The dish is pan-fried or steamed. The fermenting agent is palm toddy or yeast. Hopper variants can be either savory (such as egg hoppers, milk hoppers, and string hoppers), or sweet (such as vandu appa and pani appa). Kool is a seafood broth from Jaffna containing crab, fish, cuttlefish, prawns, and crayfish. It also contains long beans, jak seeds, manioc, spinach, and tamarind. The dish is thickened with palmyra root flour. Short eats are a variety of snacks that are bought by the dozen from short eat shops and restaurants. These are eaten on the go, mainly for breakfast or during the evening. Short eats include pastries, Chinese rolls and patties. A popular short eat among Tamils is the mutton roll, made from tender pieces of mutton with potato and seasoned with spices. This can be a very spicy dish. Mutton rolls are served all over the world wherever there are Sri Lankan Tamils.

To get to Kandy from Colombo, you can take a train. It's very comfortable, but make sure you get tickets ahead of time. You can buy small fried snacks to munch on as well. We met up with Pali our guide who is a former monk and soldier. We ate lunch at Garden Cafe. Don't be afraid to use your hands. Then we went to a wood shop and bought some Buddhas for our parents. A traditional dance ceremony followed and a visit to the Buddha Tooth Temple was worth it.

KANDY ON A BUDGET · BEST FREE ATTRACTIONS · SRI LANKA 2018 | TRAVEL VLOG #58
Is there anything to see i Kandy, if you don't want to go to the Temple of Tooth or watch Kandyan Dancing at the Culture Center and part with thousands of rupees? The answer is yes!
We had a hard time finding any guide to Kandy, Sri Lanka that didn't just mention the Temple of the Tooth, Kandyan Dancing and the Botanical Gardens, so we decided to challenge ourselves to find another side of Kandy and explore Kandy on a budget.
And it worked. In fact, it worked so well that we had to cut a place (The Central Market) from the video that was way too long. So yes, you can definitely explore Kandy on a budget.
We hadn't heard a lot of great things about Kandy, but we were positively surprised. Our favourite Kandy spots were The British Garrison Cemetery (and our awesome guide!) and the Masala Dosas at Balaji Dosai in the center of Kandy. They were so freaking good! Definitely do yourselves a favour and try one (or three) if you ever stop by Kandy on your way to Ella or Nuwara Eliya.

Hi there! I'm Anne-Li – Danish girl, globetrotter, travel vlogger, blogger and digital nomad traveling the world with my partner in crime and long-term boyfriend Mathias. Spending a month in Budapest every summer taught us that traveling does not have to be expensive and that slow travel is the way to go – for us. We have been traveling full-time since September 2016, and we usually base ourselves in one place for at least a month or two. This way of traveling is not only budget friendly – it also means that we can take our time and really explore and enjoy the place we're in. We eat local food, shop at local markets, meet local people and enjoy experiencing different cultures – all the while seeking out the best wifi and exploring everything there is to explore. Everyday is another adventure, and we’d love for you to be part of it!

Experiencing the Hills of Kandy in Sri Lanka
While in Sri Lanka, we make our way by road from Colombo to Kandy. A picturesque route surrounded by mountains leads us to the Temple of the Tooth Relic, which is a sacred place of worship and a UNESCO world heritage site since 1988. In the outskirts of Kandy we also visit a spice garden and a tea plantation making for a varied journey. We return to the city and are enthralled by the power-packed traditional fire dance of Kandy known as Gini Sisila.

Having a week remaining in Sri Lanka, I am left with $150 cash in my pocket. During my time in Kandy, I thought to myself if I could make as a challenge, reminding me of how I used to travel. Money helps when it comes to traveling but surely, it isn't the ONLY important aspect when it comes to creating meaningful experiences. Most of the time, simple interactions with locals surprise you in a way that you would have never thought of!

Kandy, Sri Lanka - Travel Video (HD)
Go to for lots more travel and street food!
Kandy, Sri Lanka is the ancient Kings' capital of the jewel shaped island. It's a historical city with many things to do and see. Located on the Kandy plateau, the air is cool and the scenery is green.
The main center of the city is the lake that is surrounded by rolling foothills. On the lake is the famous Temple of the Tooth which supposedly houses the tooth of Buddha. This temple is one of the most holy Buddhist pilgrimage points in all of Kandy.
In this video, I didn't get to go to the Temple of the Tooth, but I did climb the hill with that included the giant Buddha statue and also included fantastic views of the city!
The first place I visit in this travel video is the YMCA Soya Center which is a locally famous place to eat soy milk ice cream and a number of other treats. I couldn't help from ordering a soy roti which proved to be excellent, a true winner of a snack!
From there I ventured to Kandy Market which I thought was one of the most interesting places in the city. The people were very friendly and the produce looked fantastic. I stopped at one stall to drink a fresh King coconut, which was very refreshing!
Kandy was not my favorite city in Sri Lanka, but it is definitely worth a visit when you visit the magnificent island!

Best Dosai Kandy - Delicious Street Foods Kandy, Sri Lanka.
It was an unforgettable night out. First we came to katugastota. we suddenly hit the road. Our scooter broke down while we are travelling to kandy city. We had to push and walk for about 3km under the windy rain. It was so funny. Then we got repair the scooter and came to kandy. Actually kandy is very beautiful. So calm and decorated with light. Kandy perahara had started at the moment.
We were very tired so we went to Balaji street food shop to have dinner. It was in the Peradeniya road. Infront of the Pushpadana girls college kandy. We ordered two dosai from their. One was plain dosai and other was gee dosai which was made using oil gee. we tasted them with white chilly sambol with pumking curry. All curries and dosai were superb!!! Delicious. !!!
we spend only 0.56$ for plain dosai and 0.84$ for the gee dosai. So cheaper than we expected. Taste was maximum! Also we spent 2$ for the petrol. We enjoyed a lot. Thank you kandy

Visit of a covered market square in Kandy: (Sinhala: මහ නුවර maha nuvara, pronounced [mahaˈnuʋərə]; Tamil: கண்டி kaṇṭi, pronounced [ˈkaɳɖi]) is the English name for the city of Maha Nuvara (Senkadagalapura) in the centre of Sri Lanka. It was the last capital of the ancient kings' era of Sri Lanka. The city lies in the midst of hills in the Kandy plateau, which crosses an area of tropical plantations, mainly tea. Kandy is one of the most scenic cities in Sri Lanka; it is both an administrative and religious city. It is the capital of the Central Province (which encompasses the districts of Kandy, Matale and Nuwara Eliya) and also of Kandy District. Kandy is the home of The Temple of the Tooth Relic (Sri Dalada Maligawa) one of the most venerable places for the Buddhist community of Sri Lanka and all around the world. It was declared by the UNESCO has a world heritage in 1988. (Wikipedia)
