Kapaleshwar Temple, Nashik*श्री.कपालेश्वर मंदिर , नाशिक - त्रयोदशी *Trayadoshi Shradha
Kapaleshwar Temple, NasikKapaleshwar Temple is among the very oldest temple in Nashik which was built in the 14th Century. It is located to the east of Ramakund, Panchavati at Nashik in the Indian state of Maharashtra. One of the ancient Lord Shiva temples on the banks of Godavari River in Nashik is well known as Lord Kapaleshwar Mahadev Temple. This is a fabulously built shrine found on the peaceful environment. The temple is very peculiar because there is not Nandi Bull in front of the Shivalingam, which is very rare. At every Monday there is a Puja at Ramakund Ganga ghat of Shree Kapaleshwar Mandir. Many peoples come for Darshan in this temple daily.
Legend of Kapaleshwar Temple
Kapaleshwar Temple has a legend associated with it. The story behind it is that once Lord Shiva by mistake killed a cow which is called Gohatya in Hindu mythology. In order to free from this sin Nandi told him to go to Nashik and take a bath in Ramakund. As per Nandi’s instruction, Lord Shiva went to Nashik and cleaned his sin by taking a bath in Ramakund. Thereafter he had chanted some mantra where the temple is currently located.
Significance of Kapaleshwar Temple
Every temple of Lord Shiva has a Nandi who is the vehicle of the Mahadev but this temple has a unique feature that it does not have a Nandi. It is believed that because Nandi suggested Lord Shiva, the ways to clean his sin of killing a cow and so he considered Nandi as his Guru and therefore this temple has no Nandi.
Nearby Attractions at Kapaleshwar Temple
There are also Shree Ganesh Temple, Maruti Temple and Gayatri Devi Temple near Kapaleshwar Temple. Although there are many attractions near the temple but one of the attraction inside the temple is Ramakund where Lord Shiva took bath after making a sin of killing a cow and it is believed that for every individual it is recommended to take a bath once there in Ramakund to evade from his sins.
How to Reach Kapaleshwar Temple
The temple is 1 km from the central bus station of Nashik. To reach the city centre there is an availability of buses, rickshaws and taxis. The nearest airport from Nashik is about 175 km away in Mumbai which is both domestic and international. Cabs can be hired from the airport to reach Nashik. Nashik has a well connected railway station on the central railway station.

This temple was constructed by Raju Balaji Baji Rao who ruled Maharashtra. Later, so many Maratha kings contributed in several ways to improve the temple. Very nearer to the temple, Papaharini Theertam is located. People take bath here before visiting the temple which is considered as a holy bath. This place is formed by river Godavari after falling from Brahmagiri.
The temple is situated in a hill region called Sahyagiri. The Temple premesis is called Brahmagiri, also considered as the most sacred place of river Godavari (Brahma Sthalam). The Sun, Moon and Agni form the three eyes located at different direction on this Jyotirlinga. Inside the main linga, there are three more lingas visible. These are considered as, Brahma, Vishnu and Maheshwara. There is a belief that, anybody who performs puja for this Jyothirlinga, is considered as actually worshipping all these three Gods.

Shri Kapaleshwar Mahadev Temple(Nashik)
The story is narrated in 'Padmapurana', by the holy saint 'Markandey' rishi. (In 'Padmapuran' one of the mythological books of its time as per events details are concerned).Lord Bramha had five faces. Out of them four faces he used to recite VEDAS and by fifth he would criticise and jealously blame acts of Lord Vishnu. During course of a meeting Galaxy-Lord, He started his act of criticism to Lord Vishnu and them switched his act of criticism to Lord Shiva. In response Lord Shiva did not liked it and snatched the Bramhastrsa tool from Bramhas hand and chopped off his fifth face-nake from his body. Lord gathering was goied because of the punnishment act of Lord Shiva and was more symphethetic towords Loed Vishnu. But Shiv Shankar did not feel comfortable by his own act. He started feeling guilty of doing so, and was processed with feeling and trauma of Bramha Hatya; a deadly sin worth repenting in life.
To wipe out this unavoidable sinful act he started looking for some solace, means of repenting it to ease himself out. For this travelled northward to find out source or method ton evolve himself from this sin but unable to find solution, then he turned southward. While travelling he stayed at Nashik in Panchavati, pilgremage. The place for raste chosen by Lord Shiva was an open space at the home of 'Dev Sharma' bramhin. While rasting nearly heard the the conversation which was going on in the cattleshed calfcow (Nandi); who had been great learned man in his prior on was talking to his mother that master Dev Sharma barmhin harrased him by bullying for long. He would teach him a lesson and would finish (his life) his of. Mother replied by doing this he would be put to the task of commiting a deadly sin ; Bramha hatya . Nandi replied that he is aware of panace for this seadly sin. Mother you may say that Lord Shiva has also committed the sin by detaching fifth face from Lord Bramha's body. It was an act ehich was done in anger and agonic, the mind of man is raged and he forget what he was doing. He realizes his folly when he calsms down and things in the normal way. Lord Shiva will have a sollution for the panace when he is normalised.
