karkonosze National Park - Hiking from Poland to Czech Republic. The Karkonosze National Park The Karkonosze National Park is located in southwestern Poland, along the border with the Czech Republic. It consists of the Karkonosze Mountains, the highest mountain range in the Sudetes. The characteristic features of its landscape are the glacial kettles with boulders and ponds hidden inside. Weathered granite rocks shaped like mushrooms or maces can also be found on the mountainsides.Śnieżka, located within the Park’s borders, is the highest peak in the Karkonosze (1602 meters mamsl). An old chapel, a restaurant and a meteorological observatory are situated on top of Śnieżka. It has the highest above-the-ground elevation of all Polish mountains. There is a chairlift on the Czech side of the Śnieżka Mountain. Another attractive summit in Karkonosze is Szrenica, with a chairlift from Szklarska Poręba and a mountain lodge located on its summit. Both summits have breathtaking views of the Jelenia Góra valley. The visibility on Śnieżka exceeds 200 meters on a sunny day.Stags, does, boars, muskrats, otters and white-tailed eagles and other species inhabit the Karkonosze National Park. Mouflons, brought at the end of the 19th century from Corsica and Sardinia can also be found here. The Karkonosze National Park and the protected area located on the Czech side have been defined as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.Visitors to the Park can find accommodation in Karpacz and Szklarska Poręba.

Karkonosze ... the mountain range called Karkonosze in Polish (Czech: Krkonoše, German: Riesengebirge, English: Giant Mountains) lies on the border of the Czech Republic and Poland, between Bohemia and Silesia. It is part of the larger Sudetes range. Its highest peak is Snežka (Polish Sniezka, German Schneekoppe), which stands on the border between the two countries at a height of 1,602 meters (5,260 ft) above sea level, making it the highest peak in the Czech Republic and in the entire Sudetes range. They contain the source of the Elbe River. Large areas of the mountains are preserved as national parks by both countries: the Czech Krkonoše National Park, and the Polish Karkonosze National Park. In 1992 the Czech and Polish parts of the range were jointly designated a trans-boundary biosphere reserve under UNESCO's Man and the Biosphere program.
Chojnik ... (German: Kynast) is a castle located above the village of Sobieszów, today part of Jelenia Góra in southwestern Poland. Its remains stand on top of the Chojnik hill (627 m (2,057 ft)) within the Karkonosze National Park, overlooking the Jelenia Góra valley.
The building of the fortress dates back to the times of the Silesian Piasts and for most of its time was in the possession of the Schaffgotsch noble family. Today the semi-ruined stronghold is a major tourist attraction and houses a hotel and a restaurant.
History ... The castle of Chojnik was originally erected by the order of Duke Bolko I the Strict in 1292 at the site of a former hunting lodge built by his father Boleslaw II the Bald. The fortress was meant to protect the borders of Bolko's Duchy of Jawor against the menacing Wenceslaus II of Bohemia. Bolko's grandson Bolko II the Small, the last independent Piast duke, had the castle reconstructed starting from 1355.

Western Poland (#05): Vang Church
Karpacz (German Krummhübel) is a spa town and ski resort in Jelenia Góra County, Lower Silesian Voivodeship, south-western Poland, and one of the most important centres for mountain hiking and skiing. Its population is about 5,000. Karpacz is situated in the Karkonosze mountains - a resort with increasing importance for tourism as an alternative to the Alps. Karpacz is located at 480-885 metres above sea level. South of Karpacz on the border to the Czech Republic there is Mount Snežka-Snieska (1,602 m). In Karpacz Górny there is a Norwegian stave church, moved here from Vang, Norway in the mid-19th century.
Wang Church was built at the turn of 12th century in Vang which accounts for its present name. Vang was a settlement at Lake Vang in southern Norway.
Lake Wang (Vangsmjosi in Norway) set 466 m above sea level surrounded by high mountains where Mount Grindafjellet (1724 m above sea level), their most famous peak used to be a dwelling place for Tindull Grindo, a troll, in the olden days. A circle marks a former site of the Wang church.
About a thousand similar wooden (stave) churches were built there then, yet till the present day only thirty one such churches survived in Norway, and this one in Karpacz Górny. Our Twin Parish in Hahnenklee, Germany, has also a wooden church built in 1908 according to the Norwegian designs.
In the nineteenth century Wang Church proved too small and in need of costly renovation, and so a decision to sell it was made. The money was needed to pay back a loan taken for the construction of a new one.
Thanks to the efforts of a Dresden-based Norwegian painter, Professor John Christian Dahl, this great architectural experience of the Vikings was bought for the sum of 427 marks by the then king, Frederick William IV. A royal architect completed the working plan of the church building, and the edifice was taken to pieces so as to be shipped, in boxes, to Szczecin in 1841 and from there - to the Royal Museum in Berlin. The King, however, had abandoned the idea of having it reerected on the Peacock Island near Berlin and started seeking another site for the church to render its religious services.

Trasa wycieczki zaczyna się dworcu kolejowym w Jeleniej Górze, skąd za znakami żółtymi podchodzimy na Górę Parkową z kilkoma skałkami a dalej na Wzgórze Kościuszki. W 1779 roku burmistrz Schonau przystąpił do realizacji projektu stworzenia na wzgórzu publicznego parku: wytyczono ścieżki, wyeksponowano skałki, dosadzono drzewa i krzewy, urządzono punkty widokowe, zbudowano altanki. U stóp wzgórza mieszczanie zaczęli zakładać ozdobne ogrody i wznosić letnie domy. Na północnym zboczu burmistrz ustawił tzw. piramidę, pomnik upamiętniający jego żonę, Friederike Helene Schonau (z domu Jäger), która była wielką propagatorką upiększania krajobrazu.
W Parku Miejskim na Wzgórzu Kościuszki w 1902 r. zbudowano Model przekroju geologicznego przez Sudety Zachodnie, opracowany przez profesora Georga Güricha. Model rozpoczyna się od Teplic nad Metują w czeskich Górach Stołowych, przez Góry Krucze, grzbiet Karkonoszy ze Śnieżką i Szrenicą, Góry i Pogórze Izerskie do bazaltowego wzniesienia Grodziec. Przekrój ma 20 metrów długości. Wykonany jest z ok. 30 różnych gatunków skał budujących te góry, które przedstawia.
Kolejną atrakcją na trasie jest Dwór Czarne wybudowany w 1559 r. To jeden z obiektów na malowniczym szlaku Dolina Pałaców i Ogrodów w Kotlinie Jeleniogórskiej na Dolnym Śląsku.
Dalej żółty szlak prowadzi na Górę Witosza (484 m). Jest to wyróżniające się wzniesienie Wzgórz Łomnickich, będące doskonałym punktem widokowym na otaczającą Kotlinę Jeleniogórską i Karkonosze. Na szczycie zachowały się pozostałości cokołu, na którym stał niegdyś pomnik Otto von Bismarcka. Zbocza są usiane licznymi granitowymi formami skalnymi i małymi jaskiniami m. in. Skalna Komora, Ucho Igielne, Pustelnia, Skalna Uliczka, które dzięki procesom wietrzeniowym przybrały rozmaite kształty - tworząc bardzo atrakcyjne miejsce. Z Witoszy schodzimy do wsi Staniszów.
W centrum wsi stoi gotycko-barokowy kościół Przemienienia Pańskiego z XV w.
Niecałe 2 km od Staniszowa znajduje się Góra Grodna (506 m), najwyższy szczyt Gór Łomnickich. Na szczycie Góry Grodno znajdują się ciekawe ruiny zamku. Polecił wznieść go hrabia Henryk von Reuss z Kowar, w 1806 r. Jest to pseudogotycka baszta obronna, która w XIX w. stanowiła modne, romantyczne urozmaicenie krajobrazu. Spełniała także, dzięki izbom mieszkalnym, rolę schronu myśliwskiego. Zamek został ukończony w 1841 roku. Dziś można tu zobaczyć neogotycką wieżę oraz ściany obwodowe.
Obok jest skałka Urwisko, na którą prowadzą schodki, z rozciągającą się prześliczną panoramą na zbiornik wodny w Sosnówce i Karkonosze. Z Grodna schodzimy za znakami niebieskimi do wsi Marczyce.
