De Haar Castle is located in the village of Haarzuilens in the city of Utrecht. We have seen a few castles all over Europe and this is quite comparable with its majestic beauty on the outside and its rich culture and history within. Interesting if you read all about it, famous people have been invited over for lavish parties through time. Fairly recent was an event last year in September. So being here is such a treat!

„Kasteel de Haar“ (Schloss de Haar) ist das größte Schloss der Niederlande, nahe der Stadt Utrecht gelegen und nur eine halbe Autostunde von Amsterdam entfernt. Kasteel de Haar mag zwar wie aus dem Mittelalter wirken, aber es wurde im 20. Jahrhundert erbaut. Im Auftrag von Baron Etienne van Zuylen van Nijevelt schuf der berühmte holländische Architekt Pierre Cuypers zwischen 1892 und 1912 ein neues Schloss auf den Überresten der alten, verfallenen Burg, die sich dort einst befand. In den 60er Jahren empfing die Familie Van Zuylen van Nijevelt hier den internationalen Jetset, von Brigitte Bardot und Coco Chanel bis hin zu Maria Callas und Roger Moore. Bei einem Besuch in Kasteel de Haar fühlt man sich in die glorreichen Tage des 20. Jahrhunderts versetzt.

Kasteel de Haar (Castle de Haar) is the largest castle in the Netherlands, near the city of Utrecht and only half an hour's drive from Amsterdam. This castle looks like a real fairytale castle - just as one would imagine a medieval fort: with towers and battlements, moat, castle gate and drawbridge.
Kasteel de Haar may seem medieval, but it was built in the 20th century. On behalf of Baron Etienne van Zuylen van Nijevelt, the famous Dutch architect Pierre Cuypers created a new castle between 1892 and 1912 on the remains of the old, dilapidated castle that once stood there. In the 1960s the Van Zuylen van Nijevelt family welcomed the international jet set here, from Brigitte Bardot and Coco Chanel to Maria Callas and Roger Moore. A visit to Kasteel de Haar will take you back to the glorious days of the 20th century.

ABOUT DE HAAR CASTLE
DE HAAR is the largest castle in the Netherlands, once the private residence of the Van Zuylen family, whose descendants still stay here yearly. In the last century, the castle also frequently hosted members of the international jet set with their lavish lifestyle; from Coco Chanel to Roger Moore, they too left their mark on the sumptuous rooms of the most opulent spot in Utrecht.
Few castles in The Netherlands can equal De Haar for its ideal image of a medieval fortress with towers and ramparts, moats, gates and drawbridges. Like a real fairy-tale castle it rises majestically from parkland with impressive trees, old gardens and ponds. The castle is situated in the centre of The Netherlands, near Utrecht, and is easy to reach by car. There is ample parking space.
De Haar Castle ranks among the top twenty most visited Dutch museums. It is a historic monument alive with year-round activities such as guided tours (for adults and for children), exhibitions, theatre and events. De Haar Castle is a private foundation and does not receive any regular subsidies from local or central government. The foundation is a non-profit organisation and depends entirely on its revenues from ticket sales, activities and events.
For over a century it has been tradition for the Van Zuylen van Nijevelt van de Haar family to reside in the castle for one month a year, in September. The tradition centres around entertaining prominent international guests at lavish house parties hosted by the baron and baroness. Famous guests included Coco Chanel, Maria Callas, Gregory Peck, Roger Moore, Yves Saint Laurent, Joan Collins and Brigitte Bardot.
The medieval House De Haar dates from the 13th century. It fell into disrepair in the 18th and 19th centuries. Architect Pierre Cuypers (famous for his designs of the Rijksmuseum and the Central Station in Amsterdam) restored and rebuilt De Haar for baron Etienne van Zuylen van Nijevelt van de Haar. The rebuilding took from 1892 till 1912 and was a project unique of its kind in all of Europe.
Cuypers’ grand design included not just the architecture of the castle but also the interiors, the gardens, the chapel and even the village of Haarzuilens. Without exaggeration the whole can be described as a Gesamtkunstwerk. Cuypers has created a unique, special world: an enchanting oasis of harmony and peace.
The park and gardens surrounding De Haar Castle – covering over 135 acres of land – are worth a visit in their own right. The Rose Garden, the Roman Garden, the ponds and canals, as well as the many bridges, romantic vistas and impressive avenues invite visitors to go on long walks or have a picnic. Castle De Haar is located near Haarzuilens, in the province of Utrecht in the Netherlands. The current buildings, except for the chapel, date from 1892 and are the work of Dutch architect P.J.H. Cuypers.
The oldest historical record of a building at the location of the current castle dates to 1391.

In 1892 architect Pierre Cuypers (1827-1921) was contracted to rebuild the ruinous castle, which took 15 years.
The name of Pierre Cuypers is most frequently associated with the Amsterdam Central Station (1881--1889) and the Rijksmuseum (1876--1885), both in Amsterdam.
The castle as it looks now, is an example of Neo-Gothic or Gothic Revival architecture.
It 200 rooms and 30 bathrooms, of which only a small number on the ground floor have been opened to be viewed by the public. In the hall, Cuypers has placed a statue with his own image in a corner of the gallery on the first floor.
The castle was equipped by Cuypers with the most modern gadgets, such as electrical lighting with its own generator, and central heating by way of steam. This installation is internationally recognized as an industrial monument. The kitchen was for that period also very modern and still has a large collection of pots and pans and an enormous furnace of approximately 6 metres long, which is heated with peat or coals. The tiles in the kitchen are decorated with the coats of arms of the families De Haar and Van Zuylen, which were for this purpose especially baked in Franeker. Cuypers marked out the difference between the old walls and the new bricks, by using a different kind of brick for the new walls. For the interior Cuypers made a lot of use of cast iron.
The interior of the castle is decorated with richly ornamented woodcarving, which reminds one of the interior of a Roman Catholic church. This carving was made in the workshop of Cuypers in Roermond.
Cuypers even designed the tableware. The interior is also furnished with many works of the Rothschild collections, including beautiful old porcelain from Japan and China, and several old Flemish tapestries and paintings with religious illustrations. A showpiece is a carrier coach of the woman of a Shogun from Japan. There is only one more left in the world, which stands in a museum in Tokyo.

This weeks day trip was to Utrecht with Delia, however we spent majority of our time in Kasteel De Haar which is a castle owned by a noble family now turned into a museum. It is definitely a place to go to and i would definitely visit Utrecht again, somehow it reminds me of amsterdam but a more cleaner and less hectic version of it.
