Katas Raj Temples also locally known as “Qila Katas” are Hindu mandir (temples). It is situated in Katas village 40 kilometres from the Chakwal district of Punjab. It is a dedication to Shiva, the temple has existed since the days of Mahabharata and the Pandava brothers spent a substantial part of their deport at the site. The Government of Pakistan is considering nominating the temple complex for World Heritage Site status. It is also suggested to spend about Rs 20 million in three phases for the re-establishment of the complex.
According to historians a story is related to the ponds in it and that is about the death of Shiva’s wife Satti; the story goes that when she died he cried so much and for so long that his tears created two holy ponds, one at Pushkara in Ajmer and the other at Ketaksha, which literally means “raining eyes” in Sanskrit. It is from this name that the word Ketas is derived. Another version of the legend mentions the two pools at Katasraj and Nainital.

Spreading its beauty near Chakwal in Punjab province of Pakistan, the most reverenced among all the temples are the Katas Raj Temples. In a heaven like surrounding, complex of temples stands in homage to the deities of Hindu mythology.
The Katas site houses the Satgraha or seven temples, a gathering of seven old temple, remains of a Buddhist stupa, a couple of medieval sanctuaries, havelis and some as the newly built sanctuaries, scattered around a lake considered sacred by Hindus.
The sanctuaries at Katas are mostly developed on square platforms. The elevation of the sub shrines seems to form a series of cornices with small rows of pillars, crowned by a ribbed dome.
According to Alan Cunningham, the first Director General of the Archaeological Survey of India in 1872-73 CE, Katasraj is the second biggest holy place in Punjab for Hindu pioneers after Jawala Mukhi. It is said prominent Pandwas brothers lived 12 years in Katas and assembled the sanctuaries of Satghara.
Katas Raj, a conglomeration of temples preserves at least 1500 years worth of history ranging from Buddhist era to British rule in that particular space.

Katas Raj Mandir (کٹاس راج مندر) is a Hindu mandir situated in Katas village in the Chakwal district of Punjab in Pakistan. Dedicated to Shiva, the temple has existed since the days of Mahābhārata and the Pandava brothers spent a substantial part of their exile at the site. The Pakistan Government is considering nominating the temple complex for World Heritage Site status. It also proposes to spend about Rs 20 million in three phases for the restoration of the complex.
History:
Most of the temples, located some 40 km from the modern city of Chakwal in the Potohar region of northern Punjab in Pakistan, were built during the reign of Hindu kings. These several temples were built around 900 years ago or more, although the earliest of the Katasraj temples dates back to the latter half of the 6th century A.D. Scholars believe that most of the temples were actually constructed when the Shahi kingdom, driven from Afghanistan when their ethnic cousin Mahmud of Ghanavi came to power, fled to the region and set up base there.
The mandir was abandoned by local Hindus when they migrated to East Punjab in 1947. It has always been the site of holy pilgrimage for people of various faiths. Even nowadays, worshippers from all faiths perform pilgrimages to the mandir every year and bathe in the sacred pool around which Katasraj is built.

Katasraj is an ancient Hindu Temple Cluster which is now in Pakistan after the partition of old India in 1947 and Pakistan came in to existence. Just after the partition declaration, on both side of the border, there were ethnic clashes and properties, worshiping places were destroyed and mass killings were done on running refugees from both of the countries. Katasraj temples are the result of those events. Totally ruined and neglected temples still exist with a natural beautiful pond. Now Govt. of Pakistan has taken care of it as an archeological valued place, (not as a Hindu temple). It is just four five years back that Pakistan govt. allowed a group of Hindu Pilgrims to worship at Shiva Temple at Katasraj on Shivratri Festival of Hindus which fall almost in March every year. In that series, a group of about 150 pilgrims went to Katasraj with visa from 3/3/2008 to 11/03/2008. This is the shooting of that time. Please enjoy.

The temples are located near the town of Kallar Kahar, and are near the M2 Motorway.
The temples' pond is said in the Puranas to have been created from the teardrops of Shiva, after he wandered the Earth inconsolable after the death of his wife Sati.[3][2] The pond occupies an area of two kanals and 15 marlas, with a maximum depth of 20 feet. The temples play a role in the Hindu epic poem, the Mahābhārata,[4] where the temples are traditionally believed to have been the site where the Pandava brothers spent a significant portion of their exile.[3] It is also traditionally believed by Hindus to be the site where the brothers engaged in a riddle contest with the Yakshas, as described in the Yaksha Prashna.[5][4][6] Another tradition states that the Hindu deity Krishna laid the foundation of the temple, and established a hand-made shivling in it.
The temples were visited by India's former deputy prime minister Lal Krishna Advani in 2005. In 2006, the Pakistani government began restoration works at the temples, with further improvements announced in 2017.
