A Walk Around The Wunderbar KaDeWa Food Hall, Berlin
I would have never known about this place unless you know a foodie. I live with a foodie. He did his German Food and Dining homework. He said this is a MUST SEE place in Berlin. This is the Kaufhaus De Westens (KaDeWe) Department store in Berlin. The Biggest Department store in Europe. And it has the biggest food hall in the whole wide world.
The 6th and 7th floors are entirely devoted to food, and advertisements tout the place as having two football fields of food. The 6th floor food hall is called Delicatessen and is famous for its wide variety of food and beverages. It has around 110 cooks and 40 bakers and confectioners supplying more than 30 gourmet counters. The top floor (added in the early 1990s) includes a winter garden with a 1000-seat restaurant surrounded by an all windowed wall offering a view over the Wittenbergplatz.
The KaDeWe was near my hotel so I got there when the doors opened early in the morning and was the first one to the floor. Thus very few shoppers and less people blocking my shots. Most of the staff still seemed to be in prep mode.
I almost did Mary-Lou-Retton-back-flips-with-a-splits-on-a-landing-and-arms-in-the-air (in fast motion) down the aisle of the store when I came to the beer section. Oh Wow! My heaven would be having this food hall as my pantry.

Well the Ka De We foodhall is my Tiffany’s. It’s like the Harrods Food hall in London without the crowds. Every nook and cranny is filled with some wonderous food or ingredient that you never thought you had to have but now that you have laid eyes on it, it beckons to you like the ring to Sméagol. I could easily spend an entire day there. They have something like 3 cheese counters! Open deck fridges positively full to the brim with sausages. A walk through the coffee section sets you buzzing without even a small sip. The teas are stored in large porcelain urns. Incredible really!

Kaufhaus des Westens, KaDeWe (Dom Handlowy Zachodu) – dom towarowy w Berlinie w dzielnicy Schöneberg. Zajmuje powierzchnię 60 000 m2 rozdzielonej na osiem pięter i oferuje 380 000 artykułów, co daje mu pozycję największego domu towarowego w kontynentalnej Europie. Zatrudnia 2000 pracowników. Jest drugim na świecie sprzedawcą żywności w jednym miejscu po tokijskim domu handlowym Takashimaya, a powierzchnia sprzedaży żywności jest większa o 600 m2 od Harrodsa
Dom towarowy otwarto w 1907. Początkowo liczył 24 000 m2[3]. W 1927 nabył go Herman Tietz i sklep został włączony do sieci Hertie. W latach trzydziestych XX w. został rozbudowany i powiększony o dwa kolejne piętra. Antysemickie prawo wymusiło arianizację. W latach 1943-1945 dom został częściowo zniszczony przez naloty alianckie i tym samym wyłączony z użytku. Dom ponownie otwarto w 1950, a na inaugurację przybyło 180 000 osób. W 1956 obiekt został ponownie przebudowany. Swą obecną powierzchnię osiągnął w 1996.

The Wittenbergplatz Square is a square in the western part of Berlin, Germany, within the district of Schöneberg near the border with Charlottenburg. The centre of the square is occupied by the Wittenbergplatz U-Bahn station on the U1, the U2 and U3 lines (to be seen at 1:40 in this video).
The Wittenbergplatz square leads directly to the Tauentzienstraße. Tauentzienstraße is one of the major shopping streets in Berlin, where the Kaufhaus des Westens (Department Store of the West, KaDeWe for short) is located. The Kaufhaus des Westens (English Department Store of the West), usually abbreviated to KaDeWe), is a Thai owned department store in Berlin. With over 60,000 square metres of selling space and more than 380,000 articles available, it is the largest department store in Continental Europe. It attracts 40,000 to 50,000 visitors every day.
The Tauentzienstraße has a length of about 500 m (1,600 ft) and runs between two important squares, Wittenbergplatz in the east and Breitscheidplatz in the west, where it is continued by the Kurfürstendamm boulevard.

100 Jahre KaDeWe (Kaufhaus des Westens) in Berlin 2007
Im Oktober 2007 feierte das Kaufhaus des Westens (KaDeWe) am Kurfürstendamm in Berlin sein 100jähriges Bestehen. Viele bekannte und weniger bekannte Stars, darunter Schauspieler wie Kostja Ullmann, Fussballspieler Jens Lehmann, Fernsehstar Oliver Kalkofe oder auch der bekannte Playboy Rolf Eden kamen zur Feier.
