Kelleys Island is both a village in Erie County, Ohio, United States, and the island which it fully occupies in Lake Erie. Originally known by the British as Sandusky Island, but later officially designated by the U.S. as Island Number 6 and Cunningham Island, it was renamed 'Kelleys Island' in 1840 by brothers Datus and Irad Kelley, who had purchased nearly the entire island.
This island was previously occupied (probably seasonally) by Native Americans, and whose ancient graffiti (which was inscribed on a large boulder), can still be seen, here. During the beginning of The War of 1812, this island was utilized as a military rendezvous post, initially by the British, and also later by the US Military. During the early 19th-century, the island was mostly uninhabited. After the Kelley brothers purchased the island, the population began to grow (mainly as a result of commercial extraction of the island's limestone and lumber resources, and also grape-growing). In the 21st-century, the population was 312 at the 2010 census.
Today, Kelleys Island is primarily a vacation destination, and sees thousands of visitors each summer. Notable attractions include its various beaches, parks, and campgrounds. Several ferries provide regular transport for most travelers; the island also features a number of marinas, as well as a small airfield for private planes. It is the largest of the American Lake E

Put in Bay & Kelley Island ( The Midwest Playground )
Put-in-Bay is a village located on South Bass Island in Put-in-Bay Township, Ottawa County, Ohio, United States. Many believe that the name originates from some early maps of South Bass Island that showed the harbor being named Pudding Bay, probably because it was shaped like a pudding sack.] The population was 128 at the 2000 census. The village played a significant role in the War of 1812 as the location of the squadron of U.S. naval commander Oliver Hazard Perry, who sailed from the port on September 10, 1813 to engage a British squadron just north of the island in the Battle of Lake Erie. The village is a popular summer resort and recreational destination. Ferry service connects the community with Catawba Island, Kelleys Island, Port Clinton, and Sandusky, Ohio. The island's primary industry is and for most of its history has been tourism. The tourist season runs roughly between April and October. The most common methods of transportation to and from the island are via ferry boat, propeller-driven aircraft and private boat.
One of the world's largest hotels, the Hotel Victory, opened its 625 rooms to the public in 1892. The four-story hotel featured a one-thousand-seat dining room. However on August 14, 1919, the giant hotel burned to the ground. Today only parts of the foundations can be seen at the state campground.
Put-in-Bay is the site of Perry's Victory and International Peace Memorial commemorating Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry's September 10, 1813 naval victory over British ships in the War of 1812. Construction of the monument began in 1912 and it opened to the public on June 13, 1915. It is 352 feet (107 m) tall and made up of 78 layers of pink granite, topped with an eleven ton (10 metric ton) bronze urn. Its height makes it the highest open-air observatory operated by the U.S. National Park Service. The remains of six naval officers, three British and three Americans, were interred beneath the floor of the monument's rotunda.

Kelleys Island is both a village in Erie County, Ohio, United States, and the island which it fully occupies in Lake Erie. Originally known as Island Number 6 and later Cunningham Island, it was renamed in 1840 for brothers Datus and Irad Kelley, who were largely responsible for cultivatating the island's quarrying, logging and winemaking industries.[7]
Originally inhabited by Native Americans, Kelleys Island was used by the US Military as a rendezvous post during The War of 1812. During the early 19th century, several different groups made ill-fated attempts to harvest the island's limestone and lumber resources; none were successful until the Kelley brothers made their attempt in the 1830s. The population was 312 at the 2010 census.

Beaches and wildlife[edit]
Kelleys Island features a number of public beaches. Many areas allow swimming, boating, and fishing.
In August 2010, a report from The Nature Conservancy in conjunction with the US Fish and Wildlife Service U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources, and several other non-profit agencies listed Kelleys as the 7th most ecologically threatened island in the Great Lakes.[27][28][29] The reasons given for the island's poor ecological health included development, tourism and recreation, marinas and resorts, increased roads and buildings, incompatible agricultural practices and invasive species.[27][29]

Mouse Island is a private island located in Lake Erie off the northern tip of Catawba Point in Ottawa County, Ohio, United States, near the city of Sandusky (41°35′28″N 82°49′59″WCoordinates: 41°35′28″N 82°49′59″W). It was formerly named 'Ship Island', as denoted on early-19th-Century maps[1] (and in some late-18th-Century documents).[2] It was later named Mouse Island for its small size. It is part of Catawba Island Township.
The island was once owned by the American president Rutherford B. Hayes. The Hayes family built two small cabins, a hand ferry to the shore, a tennis court and supplied the island with running water. In the 1930s the island fell into disuse and all amenities were destroyed by fire or neglect. Remains of the structures can still be found on the island today - including the native stone chimneys of the summer cabins as well as part of the foundation.
The Island is privately owned and is not open for public visitation. A limestone reef between the island and shoreline presents a safety hazard for watercraft that draw more than 3 feet.
