Tangerine Dream Kelvin Hall, Glasgow 20th November 1974
01 - Septrional Remnant (37'39)
02 - Analog Ascent (15'02)
Composed and performed by Edgar Froese, Christopher Franke and Peter Baumann. Recorded at the Kelvin Hall, Glasgow on 20th November 1974 by Radio Clyde. Broadcast master tape transfer by Duncan G. Remastered by Wouter Bessels, February 2019. Artwork by Mercurycode. Produced by fans, for fans - never sell or buy, trade freely.
------------------------------
Tangerine Dream embarked on their first tour of the United Kingdom in 1974, performing twenty concerts across the country in less than seven weeks. Edgar Froese, Christoph Franke and Peter Baumann found themselves in Glasgow on the 20th of November for a concert at the Kelvin Hall, a venue which had previously played host to everything from musicians to boxers to a circus, and even operated as a factory for barrage balloons during the Second World War. The concert was captured by local station Radio Clyde for later broadcast. Only a single 1/4 tape reel from this recording is known to have survived, the last of three which are alleged to contain the entire performance. Despite being nearly half a century old, this reel had been kept in excellent condition and was professionally transferred to digital and then gently remastered.
The two tracks presented here (presumed to be the second set and the encore) were recorded less than a month before the infamous Reims Cathedral concert, yet exhibit a unique energy and approach all their own. Septrional Remnant opens with a wash of atmospheric textures, menacing drones and cascading percussion, before settling into a beautiful ambient drift punctuated by distant tones and a gradually evolving oscillating rhythm urging proceedings along. An extended excursion with the Mellotron soon follows, with passages almost echoing Mysterious Semblance at the Strand of Nightmares. After more experiments with dark abstract sounds, the band coalesce around a structured approach with a primitive sequence and improvised lead lines bringing the second set to a conclusion. Analog Ascent summarises the music the band have discovered over the course of the last two hours, before a chaotic screeching climax brings the evening to a close, and the audience respond with tumultuous applause.
Radio Clyde are known to have aired at least the 50 minutes of the concert presented here, and an off-air recording of that broadcast was at one stage intended as a volume for the Tangerine Tree series shortly before its conclusion. You may wish to consider this new release as both a late addition to that collection, as well as an appetiser for what may yet be to come...

Kelvingrove Musseum & Art Gallery
The Kelvingrove Art Gallery is a museum and art gallery in Glasgow, Scotland. The building houses one of Europe's great civic art collections. Since its refurbishment the museum is the most popular free to enter visitor attraction in Scotland, and the most visited museum in the United Kingdom outside London. It is located on Argyle Street, in the West End of the city, on the banks of the River Kelvin (opposite the architecturally similar Kelvin Hall, which was built in matching style some years later, after the previous hall had been destroyed by fire). It is adjacent to Kelvingrove Park and is situated immediately beneath the main campus of the University of Glasgow on Gilmorehill.
The construction of Kelvingrove was partly financed by the proceeds of the 1888 International Exhibition held in Kelvingrove Park. The gallery was designed by Sir John W. Simpson and E.J. Milner Allen and opened in 1901. It is built in a Spanish Baroque style, follows the Glaswegian tradition of using local red sandstone, and includes an entire program of architectural sculpture by George Frampton, Francis Derwent Wood and other sculptors.
Although intended as a permanent building, it was designed as a principal building of another International Exhibition in the Park in 1901. This explains why the building appears to be built 'back to front'. Nowadays most visitors enter from the main street, Argyle Street — the back of the building, rather than via the front entrance facing the Park (Kelvingrove has photographs and programmes from the original exhibition on display).
The museum's collections came mainly from the McLellan Galleries and from the old Kelvingrove House Museum in Kelvingrove Park. It has one of the finest collections of arms and armour in the world and a vast natural history collection. The art collection includes many outstanding European artworks, including works by the Old Masters, French Impressionists, Dutch Renaissance, Scottish Colourists and proponents of the Glasgow School.
The museum houses Christ of Saint John of the Cross by Salvador Dalí. The copyright of this painting was bought by the curator at the time after a meeting with Dalí himself. For a period between 1993 and 2006, the painting was moved to the St Mungo Museum of Religious Life and Art.
