Sierra City - Part 4 Ole Kentucky Mill and Mine
The Kentucky Mill & Mine is a prime example of early mining history which transpired in Sierra City. The mine was worked in the 1850s later the stamp mill came to be to process the gold. The thousand pound stamps were so loud that the townsfolk could hear them throughout the day. Today the site is a park and a museum the mills stamps are the only operable ones in the state. The mine itself was built into the Sierra Buttes very common back in the day as where there was quartz there was gold. Next to the entrance is an old miners cabin which has many of the necessary relics of its day needed for survival. The mine cart tracks had a split one led to a dump pile near the cliff while the other took the quartz in the mill to be crushed for gold processing. Many remnants scatter the hillside pieces that are museum worth and used during this mining operation. This tour is just a taste of things to come we will return to work with the mill more extensively.

Sierra City - Part 1 From Deadman's Curves To The Dearly Departed
Our journey into Sierra City takes us through Deadman's curves which you will catch the tail end of it as I begin filming. Soon we will be arriving in Sierra City an old gold rush mining town that dates back to the mid 1800's as the monolithic Sierra Buttes are sighted off in the distance that tower above it. Eventually our drive will take us through downtown where the cemetery lies at the western edge of town. The road that takes us through the Yuba Pass at one time was a wagon road for the early pioneers who came to the region seeking its gold. Were driving through the most northern region of the Tahoe National Forest a new region for us to explore one that does not disappoint! In the winter downtown is closed one can see as we go through town not a soul is in plain sight.

Quick Mine Explore In Sierra County Ca.
This mine is another topo map disappointment. The tailings pile for this mine was absolutely impressive with its size. At first, I was under the impression it was part of a hydraulic diggings. When I reached the bottom of the red hill however, I realized that it was the tailings dump for the adit we were looking to explore.

Sierra Buttes Rd. back into Sierra City
Little did we know that this shelf road back into town was not adequate for a Cummins. With the truck tucked up against the inside wall we had a good 12 - 18in of road on the outside. We got a good quarter of a mile down hoping it would open up a little. However, the heavy rains created some good washouts, and it showed no signs of becoming full-size friendly. We figured we should back up the trail and head back down the Packer Lake route.

Rivers where you can still find gold
There's still gold in these hills
The gold rushes of the 19th century have long since ended, but there are still plenty of places you can hunt for the precious metal using a shovel, pan, metal detector and more. In fact, recreational gold mining is a pastime these days for many people, and for good reason: the largest nugget ever found in California was discovered by an amateur. Here are some key locations worldwide that you can still prospect for the yellow metal – you never know, you may get lucky and strike it rich.

Western Museum of Mining & Industry - Indoor working stamp mill
Ocular Confections was so lucky to attend the stamp mill demo at the Western Museum of Mining & Industry. The mill is only run publicly four times a year. This includes a very informative lecture. I want to give a huge thank you to the mystery person who paid for all museum patrons on that afternoon. I also want to give a huge thank you to all museum volunteers that keep this history alive today. These are some of the nicest and knowledgeable people you would like to spend an afternoon with.
How we were lucky enough to show up on a Sunday and still get into the museum because of the harvest festival that is held here is beyond me. There is a pumpkin patch onsite. And also a tractor and hayride trailer that will tow you, the family and your pumpkin back to your vehicle. There was even a blacksmith on site. This place is amazing for a gold prospector like me.
I have been trying to piece together an old stamp mill near our claim in the mountains. The building barely stands at present and has fascinated me since the day that I was introduced to it. The once grand structure that sits upon a hillside in the middle of the mountains is now a decrepit old building that sits abandoned while the roof slowy finds it's way to the floor. I have only been able to wonder what this place did. After seeing one of only five indoor working stamp mills in the US, I can take a trip back in time and see for myself what a stamp mill is and how it worked.
Thank you Western Museum of Mining & Industry for making such a cool museum that takes you back in time! And giving us the grand tour.
