Kentucky Hemp Harvest
Lexington, Ky.
University of Kentucky researchers harvested the university’s first hemp crop in decades today.
“It was a good growing season for many crops, not just hemp,” said David Williams, UK College of Agriculture, Food and Environment agronomist and co-project lead. “Precipitation was excellent this year and more than adequate for growth. The only downside to the growing season was that we planted a little bit late, but I don’t think that had much effect on the crop.”
UK’s research plot, planted May 27, was one of the Kentucky Department of Agriculture’s pilot studies to reintroduce hemp production in Kentucky. UK’s study was conducted in conjunction with Eastern Kentucky University and Kentucky State University.
“Congratulations to the University of Kentucky and all of our partners in the hemp pilot projects on the first hemp crop in Kentucky in almost 70 years,” said Agriculture Commissioner James Comer, who has championed the cause of returning hemp production to the commonwealth. “This crop will yield significant data about production techniques, which varieties do best in Kentucky and which of the many uses of hemp are most likely to succeed here.”
Kentucky was a national leader in hemp production before the crop was outlawed in the United States due to its similarity to marijuana. Many agricultural advances have occurred since then, so research trials were necessary to determine the crop’s viability in an ever-changing agricultural economy.
UK researchers used a sickle bar mower to harvest the crop in the same manner that hay is harvested.
“Our plan was to simply lay the crop on the ground where the elements will begin to break down or ‘ret’ the hemp,” said Rich Mundell, co-project lead and an agronomist in the Kentucky Tobacco Research Development Center. “Because the hemp was very tall (about 10 feet) we felt the sickle bar mower would do a better job than a more commonly used disc mower.”
UK’s research project included 13 different varieties managed for either fiber production or seed production.
After the harvest, researchers will analyze and compare the different varieties to find one that’s best suited for the state and then present the results to the Kentucky Department of Agriculture. -Katie Pratt

Massive replica of Noah's Ark being built in Kentucky - Daily Mail
The full-sized wooden replica of the ship (pictured main left) from the biblical story of Noah and the Great Flood is to become the main attraction at an US amusement park (insert picture) set to open in July in Kentucky. Inside the ark (pictured main right) will be several exhibits featuring Noah and his family, along with information to help the public understand the Bible. Ken Ham is president and chief executive of Answers in Genesis, the Christian organisation behind the Noah's Ark-themed amusement park in Kentucky. He said: 'We want to challenge people that Noah wasn't some primitive brute. He was very intelligent. One of the big questions is how could he fit all the animals on board?' The ark, which is nearing completion, will be 510 foot long and stand 80 feet high (pictured top right). It will be able to encounter 16,000 guests per day.

The Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) is a collegiate athletic conference in the United States in which its fifteen member universities compete in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA's) Division I, with its football teams competing in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS), the highest levels for athletic competition in US-based collegiate sports. The ACC sponsors competition in twenty-five sports with many of its member institutions' athletic programs held in high regard nationally. ACC teams and athletes have claimed dozens of national championships in multiple sports throughout the conference's history. Generally, the ACC's top athletes and teams in any particular sport in a given year are considered to be among the top collegiate competitors in the nation. The ACC is considered to be one of the six collegiate power conferences, all of which enjoy extensive media coverage and automatic qualifying for their football champion into the Bowl Championship Series (BCS). With the advent of the College Football Playoff in 2014, the ACC will be one of five conferences with a contractual tie-in to an access bowl, the successors to the BCS.
Founded in 1953 in Greensboro, North Carolina, by seven universities located in the South Atlantic States, the conference added additional members in late 1953, 1979, 1991, 2004, and 2013. The 2004 and 2013 additions extended the conference's footprint into the Northeast and Midwest. The most recent expansion in 2013 saw the additions of the University of Notre Dame, the University of Pittsburgh, and Syracuse University. In 2012, the University of Maryland's Board of Regents voted to withdraw from the ACC to join the Big Ten Conference. On November 28, 2012, the ACC's Council of Presidents voted unanimously to invite the University of Louisville as a full member, replacing Maryland.

Made In Kentucky
Few people realize how many major manufacturers have operations in Kentucky, including Toyota, Corvette, Ford, Corning, North American Stainless, and Century Aluminum, to name just a few. Because of its huge industrial base, Kentucky has one of the most energy-intensive economies in the United States, an economy that has largely been sustained by the use of coal-fired electricity generation.
As concerns about climate change increase and the demand for coal is replaced by a demand for natural gas, Kentucky finds itself in a uniquely challenging position. Made In Kentucky discusses the difficulties that Kentucky faces and explores some of the solutions that might lead to a stronger Kentucky economy while still protecting the environment.
Featuring interviews with: Nathaniel Adams (North American Stainless), Dave Adkisson (Kentucky Chamber of Commerce), Bill Bissett (Kentucky Coal Association), Brenda Brickhouse (Tennessee Valley Authority), Marilyn Brown (Georgia Institute of Technology), Tony Campbell (East Kentucky Power Cooperative), Tom FitzGerald (Kentucky Resources Council), Jim Gardner (Kentucky Public Service Commission), Greg Higdon (Kentucky Association of Manufacturers), Justin Maxson (Mary Reynolds Babcock Foundation), Andrew McNeill (Kentucky Oil and Gas Association), Carey Smith (Big Ass Solutions), Rebecca Taylor (National Center for Manufacturing Sciences), Paul Thompson (LG&E and KU)
