Today I run out with Dan (youtube: Florida Fishing Couple) and we do some patch reef fishing out of the John Pennekamp State Park here in Key Largo. The Catch n Cook is a surf n' turf!

In this video:
I go to the key largo fisheries to load up on some chum and frozen google eye which we will use as cut bait. Then I ride to Dans house where his boat is in the water. We load up the boat and head through Adams cut and out of the John Pennekamp state park.
I fish a lot more south of Key Largo, more the tavernier area so i'm pretty excited to try some new grounds. We start by anchoring up in shallow 15ft water and chum with hopes of cathing live ballyhoo. Soon the ballyhoo arrive and I catch some. Dan catches a bunch of Ballyhoo his net!
We catch tons of snapper. Some yellowtail snapper, some mutton snapper. We also caught a handful of grouper, too bad they are out of season! There's also a few other species mixed into the fish we were catching. I'll be whole frying one of these yellowtail snapper in this catch and cook.
We troll some ballyhoo along the reef and you would not believe what we hooked into in 20ft of water while trolling. It blew my mind! Then we run off the edge of the reef and troll more hoping to get a wahoo or tuna.
After trolling offshore we anchor up in 55ft of water off the reefs edge and start bottom fishing again. We catch a fat grouper. 2 actually. And even a moray eel and a few other things. More snapper of course. I'm ready for this catch n cook, i'm pretty hungry let's head back in!
In this catch and cook I whole fry a yellowtail snapper dipped in corn meal. Whole fried fish is amazing and I recommend anyone to try this catch and cook recipe. catch clean and cook. We get back to Dans house where I clean some of the fish. Then I stop at publix to pick up some extra ingredients and the cooking begins!

Key Largo Fishing Trip # 2
We went to visit Capt Josh in Key Largo. We were scheduled to take out a boat but due to storms, there was a small craft advisory. So instead, we had some fun fishing right where we were. As for me, I was after the elusive barracuda. I had hooked two last trip but they had broke the line.
We started out fishing off the side of the road in Islamorada. Next, we moved over to Founders Park. we ended the trip fishing off the house boat in Tavernier. Actually, now that I think about it, we didn't fish in Key Largo at all ;)

Headed out to the reef with Fred and Stewart on a perfectly calm day. You could tell it was going to be a good day when the bait basically lined up to climb on board. Heavy chumming on top and bottom brought as many fish that we wanted to catch.

Top five things to do in Key Largo. Let me take you around and show you the best experiences this famous Florida Key has to offer. Key Largo is known for it's water activities like snorkeling, scuba diving and fishing. So, I went and tried them all. For underwater adventures like snorkeling and scuba diving in the Keys, there are a ton of shipwrecks and reefs to explore. I came upon a few big Barracuda swimming along so I followed them until I was way out past the designated snorkeling area. One of the best things to do in Key Largo is to enjoy all the cool happy hours around town. There are dozens of local bars serving up drinks seaside with live music and incredible sunset views that you need to come check out. Read more at

All fish were caught using dead shrimp dropped down to the reef.
We caught yellow tail snapper, pourgie, hog fish and grunts.
The only fish kept were the hog fish and the pourgie.

In this video:
We run out of Adams cut through the state park John Pennekamp. This is all protected reef so there is no spearfishing allowed. But they allow you to catch lobster and fish with hook and line.
We start off our fishing trip by anchoring in some 10-15ft patch reefs and start to freedive for lobster. I love lobster. They are my favorite eating thing ever. So this better be an epic catch an cook. Because we will catch some lobster!
The FWC stopped us. We had no lobster in the boat at the time. Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission works hard to make sure no illegal fish are taken. I respect all the work that Florida Wildlife Control does to ensure there are fish for everyone to catch!
We catch lobster and then move to a different part of the patch reefs here in Key Largo and start to chum for mutton snapper. We catch live ballyhoo and use them for bait. It doesn't take long before the mutton snapper start biting. This is great and this is how to catch mutton snapper in south florida!
We fill the boat with mutton snapper and even some yellowtail snapper. We call it a day and drive back to Dans home. The next day we visit the dolphins and then have a lobster grill back at Dans house. We cook the lobster on the grill and they taste amazing!
