Legal Rum Distillery in Key West
Chef Paul Menta’s Legal Rum Distillery in Key West is located at a former Coca-Cola bottling plant and pre-prohibition era bar. The distillery, formerly known as Jack’s Saloon, is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and guests are invited to tour the plant and enjoy free rum samplings. While state law prohibits distillers from selling alcoholic beverages, visitors can enjoy complimentary rum and coke drinks if they purchase one of the cola brand’s classic glass bottles.

A Salty Passion: Hi! We are Ryan (RumShopRyan) and Crystal (Castaway Crystal), we document, photograph, and film the best the Caribbean has to offer. Whether it’s stunning beaches, relaxing hotels, friendly restaurants, or soggy beach bars…we want to share it and inspire others to explore the islands.
MEET US!
Who Is RumShopRyan:
Howdy! I’m Ryan and I hail from the land-locked, can’t get any further from the ocean, state of Kansas. I moved to laid back southwest Florida in 2001. I didn’t know a single person and didn’t have a job. Risky I know, but the ocean was calling and I had to answer.
I’m a huge fan of Kansas City sports, so you’ll probably see a lot of Jayhawks, Chiefs and Royals attire in my photos. Kansas City is a great town and I’m glad I’m from there, but the coastal life was calling. It’s kind of like Kenny Chesney’s “island boy” song. Check out the lyrics and you’ll see what I mean.
I write because I’m passionate about the Caribbean and the island lifestyle, and it’s my way to share it with you. If it has anything to do with the Caribbean, rum drinks, beach style music, or Caribbean culture, you’ll be able to find it on this site.
When in the Caribbean you’ll find a camera around my neck and note pad in my pocket. This is how I document the experiences in unique and interesting ways and bring it back to you, the Castaways.
Who is Castaway Crystal:
I was raised in Southwest Florida so it’s no surprise that I have a love for beaches, water and nature. As a child, most weekends were spent fishing in the warm gulf waters on the family boat. As an adult, most weekends are spent soaking up the sun on Ft. Myers Beach. Even though I have always loved the coastal life, I don’t think I fully appreciated it until I moved to Nashville, TN. I’m all about experiencing new things, and as a Licensed Massage Therapist I thought it would be amazing to massage some of Nashville’s biggest stars (a girl can dream right?). But I missed the sun and sand too much—and let’s not forget the rum runners! After a year I couldn’t take it anymore, this sun bunny moved back to her coast of somewhere beautiful.
I’ve always been passionate about photography and writing but my passions never really had a purpose until I met Ryan. I couldn’t be happier being Ryan’s first mate and sharing my photos and stories with you. May they inspire you to go after your tropical dreams and wishes. Make a plan…Set a date…Just go!
Places to see in ( Key West - USA )
Places to see in ( Key West - USA )
Key West, a U.S. island city, is part of the Florida Keys archipelago. It's also Florida's southernmost point, lying roughly 90 miles north of Cuba. Famed for its pastel-hued, conch-style houses, it’s a cruise-ship stop also accessible from the mainland via the Overseas Highway. It’s known more for its coral reefs – destinations for diving and snorkeling – than for its beaches.
Key West is the far frontier, edgier and more eccentric than the other keys, and also far more captivating. At its heart, this 7-sq-mile island feels like a beautiful tropical oasis, where the moonflowers bloom at night and the classical Caribbean homes are so sad and romantic it’s hard not to sigh at them.
While it has obvious allure, it's not without its contradictions. On one side of the road, there are literary festivals, Caribbean villas, tropical dining rooms and expensive art galleries. On the other, an S&M fetishist parade, frat boys passing out on the sidewalk and grizzly bars filled with bearded burnouts. With all that in mind, it's easy to find your groove in this setting, no matter where your interests lie. As in other parts of the Keys, nature plays a starring role here, with some breathtaking sunsets – cause for nightly celebration down on Mallory Sq.
The earliest Key West neighborhoods, on the western part of the island, are broadly known as Old Town. The Key West Historic District includes the major tourist destinations of the island, including Mallory Square, Duval Street, the Truman Annex and Fort Zachary Taylor. Old Town is where the classic bungalows and guest mansions are found. Bahama Village, southwest of Whitehead Street, features houses, churches, and sites related to its Afro-Bahamian history. The Meadows, lying northeast of the White Street Gallery District, is exclusively residential.
Key West, the southernmost point in the United States, is famous for watersports, lively nightlife, beaches, historic sites and its pastel, conch-style architechture. Duval Street, one of the most energetic strips of shops, bars and cafes anywhere, offers Sloppy Joe’s bar, a favorite Key West hangout of novelist Ernest Hemingway. And, for the more sober-minded, there's Ernest Hemingway Home and Museum.

Key West Rum Distillery - Wine Tasting - Garbo's Grill
Today Aspace For3 visited Key West Florida to take a tour of the Chef Distilled Rum Distillery. We had some free Rum sample and won a Bad Bitch Blonde bottle on a raffle. Bob from Road Island was an excellent tour guide. We also visited the next door neighbor Key West winery for some local Florida wine tasting. After our $20 wine tasting for 10 flavors and two Key West souvenir wine glasses we went over to Garbo's Grill for an amazing delicious meal. We had shrimp tacos and shrimp burritos. Super Flavorful! highly recommend it. Overall all the three locations were cool and lots of fun. Feel free to add to your to do list in Key West.

RED Quick Bite #62 A Flight at Florida Keys Brewing Company
Source:
It’s a Quick Bite to start off our look at the 21st Annual Key West Half Marathon!
(Okay, because we did a whole flight, it is a bit longer than our normal Quick Bites, but they are such great beers, we just had to share!)
We live in Florida. It is a large state with a lot of opportunities for us to try different races, and it includes the southernmost point of the United States! Beautiful Key West, Florida affords us the chance to take a leisurely drive down through the keys and show you some great stops along the way, just in case you decide to road trip to the keys for a vacation or a runcation!
So our recap of our experience in the Keys begins with a visit to Florida Keys Brewing Company Tasting Room in Islamorada. We stopped at Islamorada Beer Company when we traveled to the Southernmost Half Marathon in Key West in October 2018. They had great beer and just a few doors down, is this unique and fun tasting room. Florida Keys Brewing Company has so many unique beers... you must have guessed that we ordered a flight. (Highlighted in the photo below!)
We tasted one of their beers at the Blackwater Siren in Key Largo and knew we had to put this place on our list for this trip. Their atmosphere is fun, with a great beer garden included, and their beer is amazing. They even had some snacks that were delicious!
THAT’S A WRAP

10 Things We Love About the Florida Keys
From Caribbean-like aquamarine waters to a friendly, island-life attitude, the Florida Keys never fail to surprise first-time visitors. See for more inspiration.
We love the food, rum, nightlife and sunsets, but were also charmed by the abundance of wildlife and the beaches (who says there's no beaches in the Keys?). The Keys manage to deliver the tropical vacations we love, but always with a little something extra we didn't expect.

Sunrise
The early bird catches the worm, the saying goes. Get up early in the Florida Keys and you'll get something much better — an awe-inspiring mix of fiery and golden hues painting the sky.
Beaches
By and large, the Florida Keys aren't known for their beaches, but there are certainly a few exceptions to the rule. Smathers Beach in Key West is the island's biggest and best-known beach, and it offers the coveted white sand and shallow water usually associated with the Caribbean.
Small but respectable South Beach and family-friendly Higgs Beach are two other favorites, and both skirt the island's Atlantic coast. Further east in Marathon, Sombrero Beach impresses with a few pristine, shallow coves, thick patches of palm trees and amenities like volleyball nets, pavilions and bathrooms.
Food
When it comes to food in the Florida Keys, variety and creativity abound. In addition to fresh catches and decadent Southern favorites, cuisine in the Keys infuses Latin elements, thanks to a thriving Cuban population. Grab a Cuban coffee — available at small family-owned coffeehouses throughout the Keys — to recharge for your vacation.
Rum
For years, distilling rum was off-limits in the Keys, due to laws still on the books from the Prohibition era, when islanders had to rely on the shady dealings of rumrunners to get their drink of choice.
A recent change to those laws has paved the way for local businesses like the Key West Legal Rum Distillery (the first legal one in the area) to concoct mixtures that capture the spirit and flavor of Key West. Stop by their distillery for a tour and a tasting session that might change your mind about rum forever.
Wildlife
From avian life to aquatic species and the occasional rogue rooster, the Florida Keys has its fair share of residents from the animal kingdom. Head to Robbie's Marina in Islamorada, where you can feed hungry swarms of giant tarpon — or save your goods for a pelican who's not too proud to beg.
Key Lime Pie
Rumor has it that key lime pie was whipped up on a whim by sponge fishermen who had eggs, condensed milk and key limes, but no access to refrigeration or equipment for cooking.
Traditionalists will want to try the tart, creamy treat the true Conch way — with the dense merengue topping. At Blonde Giraffe Key Lime Pie Factory in Tavernier, you can have it however you want: plain, with whipped cream, with merengue or even frozen and dipped in chocolate.
Boat Excursions
Though the Florida Keys consist of a smattering of land masses, most people come for what goes on away from shore. Whether for fishing, diving or sightseeing, boat excursions are the best way to acquaint yourself with the area's renowned aquamarine waters, not to mention its diverse marine life.
Snorkeling
And speaking of excursions, don't leave the archipelago without booking a snorkeling trip with a tour operator, many of which offer drinks and snacks in addition to all the gear you'll need and some basic snorkeling instruction.
Sunset Watersports offers a 9 a.m. Rise and Reef tour that includes a light breakfast and a visit to a nearby reef at a rate of $40 for adults (children under 12 are $22; no charge for children under 5).
Sunsets
No matter where you are in the Keys, once the sun starts to dip, head to the nearest shore and watch the magic unfold. It's a sacred part of the culture down here, and also the most soothing way to transition from busy days to laid-back nights.
Nightlife
The Florida Keys boast a surplus of dockside bar and grills, humble watering holes and kitschy tourist hangouts. Duval Street in Key West is reminiscent of Bourbon Street in New Orleans — it's a wonderland of live music, tipsy partygoers, and turn-a-blind-eye attitudes toward the open containers law.
At Sloppy Joe's Bar, a former Ernest Hemingway hangout, live music, strong drinks and questionable company are the order of the day.
