Ponte Vecchio:
The Ponte Vecchio Old Bridge, is a Medieval stone closed-spandrel segmental arch bridge over the Arno River, in Florence, Italy, noted for still having shops built along it, as was once common. Butchers initially occupied the shops; the present tenants are jewelers, art dealers and souvenir sellers. The Ponte Vecchio's two neighbouring bridges are the Ponte Santa Trinita and the Ponte alle Grazie. In order to connect the Palazzo Vecchio (Florence's town hall) with the Palazzo Pitti, in 1565 Cosimo I de' Medici had Giorgio Vasari build the Vasari Corridor above it. To enforce the prestige of the bridge, in 1593 the Medici Grand Dukes prohibited butchers from selling there; their place was immediately taken by several gold merchants. The corporative association of butchers had monopolised the shops on the bridge since 1442. A stone with an inscription from Dante (Paradiso xvi. 140-7) records the spot at the entrance to the bridge where Buondelmonte de' Buondelmonti was murdered on behalf of the Amidei, in 1215, initiating the urban fighting of the Guelfs and Ghibellines.
Along the Ponte Vecchio, there can be seen many padlocks affixed in various places, especially to the railing around the statue of Benvenuto Cellini. This is a recent tradition for the Ponte Vecchio, although it has been practiced in Russia and in Asia before. It was perhaps introduced by the padlock shop owner at the end of the bridge. It is popularly connected to idea of love and lovers: by locking the padlock and throwing the key into the river, the lovers became eternally bonded. This is an example of the negative impact of mass tourism: thousands of padlocks needed to be removed frequently, spoiling or damaging the structure of the centuries-old bridge; however, it seems to have decreased after the city administration put a sign on the bridge mentioning a €160 penalty for those caught locking something to the fence.
There is a similar ongoing padlock phaenomena at Ponte Milvio, due to one of Federico Moccia's books.
The bridge was severely damaged in the 1966 flood of the Arno.
The bridge is mentioned in the aria O mio babbino caro by Giacomo Puccini.Wikipedia

Florence - Italy was captured by a couple of mature travellers in 3 days.
The weather on arrival in Florence was perfect. Clear skies and 24 degrees. After checking in at our Airbnb we spent the afternoon strolling around the central areas of the city. Crowds were noticeably larger as was the presence of security personal, both police and military.
Day two began with us seeking out where to purchase the Firenze Card. This is a must if you are planning to visit more than one or two museums as once again not only does it pay for its purchase price (74 Euro) very quickly but it provides priority access and thus avoids the very long queues. By day’s end we had recouped more than 50 percent of the purchase price having visited all of the sites attached to the Duomo. These sites included the climb to the top of the Dome (Copola) – all 463 steps, Baptistery and the under-rated Museo dell’Opera del Duomo. The site seeing part of day concluded with a walk up to the Pazzale Michael Angelo (more steps) and a local bus ride home. The latter being through some very scenic parklands.
An early start for day two was factored into our schedule to ensure an undelayed entry to the Uffizi. As it turned out we were right at the head of the priority queue and when we entered the main hall of sculptures I could have shot a gun down the hall without fear of hitting anyone.
Next on the day’s plan was a visit to the Academia. The highlight here is the statue of David carved by Michelangelo. We rounded off a very busy morning with a visit to the Bargello.
Palazzo Vechio was still closed because of the Firefighters National Convention and we arrived too late to for both the Galileo Museum and Dante’s House. Our final visit for the day was to Basilica of Santa Croce. This cathedral contains the tombs of Gallileo, Marconi, Donatello and many others.
Day three commenced with a walk up to the Palazzo Pitti. Again this Palace exceeded our expectations. We thought it to be one of the more tastefully decorated Palaces and the grounds were quite well designed. Next port of call was Galileo Museum. Whilst small the exhibits were very well presented and very well described. Our afternoon was spent checking out the Medici tombs (notable for the monuments sculptured by Michael Angelo) and touring the Maria Novella Church and the attached museum.
We set out on our last day, a relatively late start (0900) and a leisurely stroll to the Palazzo Vechhio, climbing the stairs to the top of the tower to take in some more grand views. A short time into our afternoon stroll we came across the Firenze Covered In Market. Once inside I succumbed to the temptation to try a Pizza. . Freshly cooked in a wood fired oven in front of my eyes it added to the Italian experience. The price was OK as well – 8 Euros.
Having devoured my pizza we set a plan to visit what looked like a large garden area at the back of the Medicci Laurenzo. Upon arrival after a reasonable walk we were disappointed to find that the garden was a private garden and tourist access was denied. With no choice but to track back towards the central tourist area we discovered by chance a small community garden. The caretaker informed me that access to the private garden was sometimes possible by asking the concierge at the Four Seasons Hotel across the road for permission to view the gardens. We took his advice and were pleased to be given permission. They certainly were very special. Back at our Airbnb, a quick audit of our stay in Florence revealed that we have ticked off 15 of the recommended tourist highlights in our guide book. Not bad for 4 clear days of sightseeing but it does explain why we are feeling a bit tired.

Florence: when it comes to Renaissance art, there’s probably no better city in the world to soak it all in!
Our time here was spent viewing works by Italian masters both in museums and public spaces, marvelling at the architecture - in particular Florence Cathedral and its massive dome, going in search of the best lookout points, and eating plenty of pizza & gelato sharing the best things to do in Florence on your visit.
We paid 15 Euros for a ticket that gave us access to 5 attractions associated with Florence Cathedral. Giotto’s Campanile, the bell tower stands 84.7 metres with 414 steps.
We made our way over to our next attraction: the Baptistry. Known as both the Florence Baptistry and the Baptistry of Saint John.
We continued to Museo dell’Opera del Duomo, which is a museum dedicated to conserving artworks relating to Florence Cathedral.
It was time to climb the dome of Florence Cathedral. We ate our gelato at Grom and it was delicious.
The Uffizi Gallery is considered one of the best museums in the world focusing on the Italian Renaissance. Most of the art collection you see today was gifted to the city of Florence by Anna Maria Luisa, the last Medici heiress.
From Uffizi Gallery you get some pretty cool views of Ponte Vecchio and the Arno River from a higher vantage point.
We visited in Florence was Piazza della Signoria, an L-shaped square right in the heart of the city. A landmark in this square is Palazzo Vecchio or the Town Hall. And to the right of this building, you have the Loggia dei Lanzi.
Speaking of David, we did find him, over at Galleria dell’Accademia. Michelangelo’s David depicts the Biblical David carved out of a single block of marble.
Ponte Vecchia during the 16th century that one of the Medici ordered for the butcher shops to be replaced with jewellers.
When it comes to sunset in Florence, there are no better views than from Piazzale Michelangelo overlooking the historic center on the other side of the Arno River.
This indoor market is foodie central with the second floor of the market is filled with eateries. Central Market is a great place to pick up ingredients to bring back to your kitchen.
We hope you enjoyed this Florence travel guide and that it gave you ideas of things to do.
This is part of our Travel in Italy video series showcasing Italian food, Italian culture and Italian cuisine.
