Ukraine: Graham Phillips talks about detention by Ukraine military
20140522-012
SOT Graham Phillips (English): So as for the circumstances of my detention, that was yesterday around midday, we were leaving Mariupol. I had been there that day and the day before to look into more of what happened on May 9, so I'd been conducting enquiries and investigation there. I was coming to leave to return to Slavyansk at this block post at the north of the city where I've passed through many times before. Yesterday it was a little bit different. Approaching it I got my camera out and started filming, as I'd done many times. I had a helper with me, I had a local contact, so there were three of us in the car. We were approaching the checkpoint, I got out and started filming, and suddenly the soldiers were over. They were interrogating and suddenly asking quite a lot of questions.
C/U Hands
SOT Graham Phillips (English): I said to them look, you have to let me know what the next move is here. Are you going to charge me, because there's nothing you can charge me with. I've never done anything that is illegal here, I've never done anything that is contravention of the laws. I've adhered to the ethics of journalism, I've presented the situation as it is, as I see it. It became clear they were going to release me.
