Kyyiv Pechersk Lavra -Ukraine - With authentic songs from the offices of the Laure of Pechersk
The caves of Kiev Lavra ( Monastery)
The Kiev Cave Monastery is a troglodyte monastery founded in 1051 by the venerable Anthony, an orthodox monk from Greece. This monastery grew rapidly on two levels: the Nearby Caves and the Distant Caves, two complexes of narrow corridors and Spartan cells, dug in the hill, extending for hundreds of meters, and connected by a tunnel. The monks eventually left the caves around the year 1075, and the place turned into a catacomb where abbots and monks were buried. Underground churches have been dug next to the tombs, and singing services are celebrated. It is these songs that have been used for this film.

Kiev Monastery of the Caves:
Kiev Pechersk Lavra or Kyiv Pechersk Lavra, also known as the Kiev Monastery of the Caves, is a historic Orthodox Christian monastery which gave its name to one of the city districts where it is located in Kiev.Since its foundation as the cave monastery in 1051 the Lavra has been a preeminent center of Eastern Orthodox Christianity in Eastern Europe. Together with the Saint Sophia Cathedral, it is inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The monastery complex is considered a separate national historic-cultural preserve (sanctuary), the national status to which was granted on 13 March 1996. The Lavra is not only located in another part of the city, but is part of a different national sanctuary than Saint Sophia Cathedral. While being a cultural attraction, the monastery is currently active. It was named one of the Seven Wonders of Ukraine on 21 August 2007, based on voting by experts and the internet community.
Currently, the jurisdiction over the site is divided between the state museum, National Kiev-Pechersk Historic-Cultural Preserve,[9] and the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (Moscow Patriarchate) as the site of the chief monastery of that Church and the residence of its leader, Metropolitan Onuphrius.
The Great Lavra Belltower is one of the most notable features of the Kiev skyline and among the main attractions of the Lavra. 96.5 meters in height, it was the tallest free-standing belltower at the time of its construction in 1731–1745, and was designed by the architect Johann Gottfried Schädel. It is a Classical style construction and consists of tiers, surmounted by a gilded dome.
Caves:
The Kiev Pechersk Lavra caverns are a very complex system of narrow underground corridors (about 1-1½ metres wide and 2-2½ metres high), along with numerous living quarters and underground chapels. In 1051, the monk Anthony had settled in an old cave in one of the hills surrounding the Kiev Pechersk Lavra. This cave apparently grew, with numerous additions including corridors and a church, and is now what we know as the Far Caves. In 1057, Anthony moved to a cave near the Upper Lavra, now called the Near Caves.
Foreign travellers in the 16th–17th centuries had written that the catacombs of the Lavra stretched for hundreds of kilometres, reaching as far as Moscow and Novgorod,[10] which had apparently brought about to the knowledge of the Kiev Pechersk Lavra around the world.Wikipedia
Pechersk Lavra (Caves Monastery), Kiev, Ukraine.
As one of the seven wonders of Ukraine the Kiev Pechersk Lavra is a significant sacred and historical site. Kiev Pechersk Lavra has many names, the Monastery of the Kiev Caves being one, and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site along with Saint Sophia Cathedral. Situated in Kiev, Ukraine’s capital, it is a monastic complex famed for its buried monks, spiritual atmosphere, and unique underground caves. In the 11th century, an orthodox monk Anthony founded the monastery upon a search for solitude in the Ukrainian wilderness. He excavated a cave within the hillside where he lived a modest life. One by one monks began to join him and a community evolved. When decisions and rules were eventually implemented, a hierarchical framework emerged, and the monastery was firmly established. The monastery grew as wealthy princes and patriarchal figures donated buildings, land, and money.
Kiev Pechersk Lavra is essentially a complex split into two parts. One above ground and one below. The caves were the beginning of a detailed excavation in which monks created a labyrinth of underground caves and catacombs. Below ground, this network takes on a greater meaning as it is full of mummified monks, religious relics, and icons. Located above ground, visitors can find the multitude of impressive buildings which include the ruins of the Dormition Cathedral, the Holy Trinity Church, the Great Bell Tower, St. Nicholas Church, Conception of St Anne Church and the All Saints’ Church.

. Do not miss the display of micro-miniatures in the upper lavra. It sounds lame, but it is fascinating. You can enter the caves in the lower part if you dress correctly (women MUST cover their hair and wear skirts, no shorts. Expensive scarves are for sale there). Women can only just get away with pants in the winter. Start at the Lower Lavra, visiting the caves before the crowds descend for the day. There are two cave complexes, each housing the mummified remains of monks, as well as religous icons and other relics. Both caves are accessed through churches, with the entrance to the shorter caves at the end of a boardwalk. While it is free to enter the caves, you must purchase a taper candle in order to light your way. The caves are not recommended for the claustrophobic or overly tall. Once you're in there, it's hard, even impossible to turn around and go back out - you have to keep going.
