Saint Petersburg ready to host thousands of fans at 2018 World Cup
(7 Jun 2018) One of the world's most expensive stadiums is preparing to host more than 60,000 spectators in this year's football World Cup.
Saint Petersburg Stadium will host four first round group matches, a quarter-final, a semi-final, and the match for third place.
Also referred to as the Zenit Arena, Krestovsky Stadium, and Piter Arena, it was opened in 2017 and is the home of FC Zenit.
Planning for the new stadium, built at the site of the former Kirov Stadium, began in late 2005, and the first construction work started by the end of 2008.
The stadium was initially planned to be completed in 2009, but work was hampered by a series of delays, including a redesign to comply with FIFA requirements and fraud investigations.
The stadium was initially going to be funded by Russian gas firm Gazprom.
However after they pulled out the project was taken over by the St. Petersburg city government.
Work finally sped up in 2016 and the stadium was completed in April 2017, by which time overall costs had soared past 1 billion US dollars, which made it one of the most expensive stadiums ever built.
The first official match at Saint Petersburg Stadium was played on 22 April 2017 when Zenit beat Ural 2-0 in a Russian Premier League match.
The stadium has been designed by Japanese architecture firm Kisho Kurokawa and resembles the form of a spaceship with the roof held up by four masts.
A retractable roof and a sliding pitch were included in the design to make the stadium one of the most modern arenas.
This allows for the movement of a 120 metre by 80 metre pitch through electric motors, with the assistance of air pillows.
The arrangement enables the venue to be used for concerts, exhibitions and other sports as the pitch can be temporarily moved outside the stadium.
The stadium hosted four matches during the 2017 Confederations Cup, including the final.
The capacity of the stadium has been reduced to 56,196 for regular league matches, but will be increased to around 68,000 for the World Cup.

Amazing Zenit fans welcome team with stunning fire display on route to stadium
Amazing Zenit fans welcome team with stunning fire display on route to stadium. FANS of Zenit St Petersburg helped fire their team to Europa League victory with a stunning guard of honour.
Supporters were lined in a procession as the Russian club's bus arrived on the road towards the Kirov Stadium.
As the coach made its way down the street, fans ignited their torches as they called for fire and fury from their team.
And it worked.
Zenit had gone into the game with a deficit after losing last week's round of 32 tie with Fenerbahce 1-0 in Turkey.
But an early goal from Magomed Ozdoyev set the tone for the hosts who progressed to the last-16 with a 3-1 win.

Sardar Azmoun struck twice meaning Mehmet Topal's 43rd minute goal counted for nothing.
Zenit will go into the last-16 draw alongside English representatives Arsenal and Chelsea, after both sides won last night.
Gunners overturned a 1-0 first-leg loss to BATE Borisov to win 3-0 at the Emirates last night, while Chelsea also cruised to the same result.
