KIT CARSON - WikiVidi Documentary
Christopher Houston Carson , better known as Kit Carson, was an American frontiersman. He was a mountain man , wilderness guide, Indian agent, and U.S. Army officer. Carson became a frontier legend in his own lifetime via biographies and news articles. Exaggerated versions of his exploits were the subject of dime novels. Carson left home in rural present-day Missouri at age 16 to become a mountain man and trapper in the West. In the 1830s, he accompanied Ewing Young on an expedition to Mexican California and joined fur trapping expeditions into the Rocky Mountains. He lived among and married into the Arapaho and Cheyenne tribes. In the 1840s, he was hired as a guide by John C. Fremont. Fremont's expedition covered much of California, Oregon, and the Great Basin area. Fremont mapped and wrote reports and commentaries on the Oregon Trail to assist and encourage westward-bound American pioneers. Carson achieved national fame through Fremont's accounts of his expeditions. Under Fremont'...

2005 - Kit Carson Union Pacific Pumphouse
The Union Pacific Railroad Pumphouse in Kit Carson supplied water for steam engines and is thought to have been constructed in the 1870s. The sandstone block and brick building has a towered board and batten rear addition that once housed the well from which water was pumped, an unusual example of masonry for a railroad utility building and considered the only extant structure of its kind in Colorado. The pumphouse is associated with settlement of Colorado’s eastern plains and the development of the railroad. Located at the end of the rail line, Kit Carson boomed to a population of 1,500 and became a junction point for the Kansas Pacific route and the first passenger train to Denver. In 1880, Jay Gould sold the Kansas Pacific Railroad to the Union Pacific. The building is listed on the State Register of Historic Properties and believed eligible for the National Register.
Colorado Preservation, Inc. contacted the Union Pacific (UP) to discuss the fate of the pumphouse. UP, concerned that the building’s deterioration and proximity to tracks is hazardous, is willing to entertain the idea of improvements only if immediate. The Kit Carson Historical Society, who is working to acquire the property from UP, has received funding to assess the building’s condition, and continues to research its history.

Kit Carson and the 19th Century American West:A Legendary Journey of Exploration
Narrative historian Hampton Sides shares his insights into the life and times of the legendary, controversial Kit Carson, the 19th century trapper, explorer, soldier, pioneer, and Zelig of the American West. Enveloped in mythology, Carson’s epic life story provides an archetype of the clashing cultures and values that defined the 19th century American West—while giving the literature of Manifest Destiny a saga that still resonates today.

2003 - Kit Carson Hotel and Elks Lodge
The Kit Carson Hotel and Elks Lodge comprise an important commercial block in La Junta that was once the focal point for social, business and civic activities in the Arkansas Valley. It featured the largest ballroom in the region and is listed on the State Register of Historic Properties and has been determined eligible for the National Registers of Historic Places. In 1931, the Elks Lodge began remodeling the early 20th century building into the Kit Carson Hotel to help relieve the effects of the Great Depression by using local unemployed artisans, carpenters, and laborers. The remodeling added a third story, which became hotel rooms. The remaining third of the huge dance hall was retained as a ballroom. The building was refaced with a light colored brick facade. The new hotel immediately became the focal point of La Junta for social, business, and civic activities for more than fifty years before it closed its doors in the mid-1990s.
Upon listing on the Most Endangered Places, a family member of the architect that redesigned the property in 1932/33, purchased the property with the hope of reopening it as La Junta’s premier lodging. A feasibility study was undertaken through a State Historical Fund grant that determined that the structure could once again be profitable as a hotel. Unfortunately, the building’s owners could not find an investor to help finance any revitalization project and in 2012 the Urban Renewal Board and La Junta’s City Council voted to demolish the building for public safety. Kit Carson's Last Campfire
Christopher Houston Kit Carson (December 24, 1809 -- May 23, 1868) was an American frontiersman. Carson left home in rural present-day Missouri at an early age and became a trapper in the West. He gained notoriety for his role as John C. Fremont's guide in the American West. Carson also played a minor role in California during the 1846-48 Mexican-American War.
Later he became a rancher in New Mexico. During the American Civil War, he helped organize the New Mexico volunteer infantry for the Union. When the Navajos tried to take advantage of the military slack caused by the outbreak of the Civil War, the US government sent Colonel Kit Carson to settle the uprising. His mission was to gather the Navajo together and move them to Fort Sumner on the Bosque Redondo Reservation. When the Indians refused to move and hid in the Canyon de Chelly, he began a campaign of economic warfare, destroying crops, lifestock and villages. By destroying their food supplies, eventually he convinced the Navajos that going to the reservation was the only way to survive. By 1864, about 8000 Navajo had surrendered to the U.S. Army, while another 8000 hid in the back country. Kit Carson finally went home to his family. After the Civil War, Carson moved to Colorado, where he died.
