YMCA Penang GATN 2014: Kitakyushu, Japan
GATN 2014: Kitakyushu, Japan
Date: 28 July 2014 - 3 August 2014
Theme: Children Summer Camp
The 28th of July 2014 marks the day that a group of nine wide-eyed children that had arrived to the beautiful tropical Island of Penang. The group is made up of students aged 9 to 13 years, who come from various schools in the city of Kitakyushu, Japan. They are here at Penang YMCA for a 6-days/5-nights GATN experience. Principal, Mr. Kenichiro Ogawa and staff, Ms Risa Ogata from Kitakyushu YMCA act as their chaperons for the trip.
Upon arrival, the young Japanese explorers were promptly greeted and welcomed at the Penang International Airport (PIA) and chauffeured to the Penang YMCA for a hearty meal of local noodles and deserts. They were all ready for a good night’s rest after a short briefing.
There were lots of moments of laughter, suspense, surprises and most of all, fun.
What! We have to eat with our bare hands and fingers?”, This was one of those expressions from the kids when they heard that we were going to try Indian food. Sure enough, most of them were sporting enough and brave themselves to go against traditional Japanese culture of using chopsticks to go bare handed into curry rice. The look on their faces? Priceless.
One of the highlights of the programme was the “eye opening” visit to the War Museum at Batu Maung. Not only is this place rated as one of the “top 10 most haunted site in Asia” (by the National Geography Channel) but it is also an important site to the Japanese. This was where the Japanese were most active during the dark days of WW2. The children had the opportunity to learn and experience something about the Japanese occupation which they will never find in modern day history school text books.
Another interesting event for the kids was when they were introduced to local Penang fruits. They enjoyed the rambutan, duku langsat, mangosteen but the fruit that caught their attention was the king of fruits itself, the durian. The familiar sweet aromatic smell that draws hundreds of locals and visitors alike was very alien and disturbing to the kids (their chaperons included). The moment the durian was opened, the kids shouted in shocked and some even ran away from the room to escape its “deadly” forceful aroma. Among them, there was also a handful that appreciated the taste and smell of the durian. It was an amusing experience indeed!
Other activities include an adventurous hike to the Monkey Beach at Penang National Park, kayaking, a visit to a YMCA deaf club members open-house for Hari Raya celebration and of course, shopping around for unique souvenirs to bring back to Japan.
The day to leave the Penang YMCA to return to homeland Japan finally arrived and everyone was sad to say their goodbyes. The children vouched to return to this beautiful island again someday together with their friends and family.

Fifty-first Episode: Long Dead Spiraly Things
We took out kids to the Kitakyushu Museum of Natural and Human History (I can't remember the Japanese name right now) for a special exhibit of Ammonites! I loved it! But then I'm a nerd! :) I couldn't resist showing you some of the things we saw in the museum.
I meant to edit and upload this in April before the Ammonite exhibit finsihed, but I VEDA took too much time. Unfortunately the Ammonite exhibit finished 2 days ago.

One Hundred Twenty First Episode: The Omuta Zoo
We took the kids to the Omuta Zoo on a beautiful sunny day and had a great time! Some parts of the zoo are wonderfully done, while other habitats are in serious need of improvement. I have mixed feelings about the zoo, but over all I do like it and will probably take the children back occasionally. Afterwards we also went out to an onsen, but that is NOT part of this video! :)
