Kamp Klamath Overview - Klamath, California
In November 2016 we visited Kamp Klamath while touring the redwoods of Californians northern coast.
Visit Their Website -
The campground offers amenities for all styles of camping including full hookup 30 Amp, water and sewer sites for larger RV's. More rustic water and electric sites, and even remote tree covered sites for tents. There are even a few pull through sites for Large rigs in the full hookup section.
The campground is situated along the wild and beautiful Klamath River about a mile from where it empties into the pacific ocean. A short hiking trail will take you down to the water from the campground.
Chickens roam free in open areas and you can purchase their eggs at the campground convince store and gift shop. There is also a playground area, horseshoes and large deck where the summer entertainment happens. Every Saturday during the summer months is the time to visit as they hold a large all you can eat barbecue, with fresh local salmon, vegetables from their garden live music and a bonfire!
Within just a short drive from the campground there is so much to explore. Less than a mile from the campground you will come to the mouth of the Klamath river. Here we watched seals and sea lions playing and fishing in the surf. Across the River you can drive to the overlook to take in the stunning view and spend some time watching for whales.
We were sure to soak up the redwoods while we visited as well stopping at the trees of mystery to see their giant Paul Bunyan statue, amazing redwoods hike and excellent native american museum. There is also the drive through tree on your way down to prairie creek state park to see the giant redwoods and herds of elk. We also visited fern canyon which is a truly magical hike.
During the summer there is even more to do as well, like enjoying the world class salmon fishing and jet boat rides along the coast.
We enjoyed our stay at Kamp klamath and its excellent central location for visiting the wild rivers coast.

Black Bear on Klamath River
I shot this video September 4, 2009 during a Klamath Jet Boat Tour. The bear was searching for food on the banks of the Klamath River in Northern California, about 35 miles below the Oregon border. Sorry about the shaking; it's hard to hold the camera still when both the bear and the boat are moving. A big thanks to the boat captain for a good time.

Schoolhouse River Wave Klamath River, CA
This is me surfing a 6'4 Al Merrick surfboard at Schoolhouse River Wave, Klamath River, CA. The Flow is 1000cfs. The water temprature is warm (above 65). I wasn't wearing a wetsuit to keep from getting cold... I just end up with less injuries with the wetsuit on. This is very good surfing excercise for when the waves are flat is the summer. This tiny river wave pales in comparison to what would be possible if a decent wave ramp / hydrolic jump was put in the river...(illegal?) It took me at least 15 full days at this spot in order to stand up consistently. Compared to surfing decent waves in the ocean, this tiny river wave is much more difficult to ride. But I am very happy to have a shark-less wave' 1 hour's drive from my house! Everyone is welcome here. It's like the opposite of Steamer Lane in Santa Cruz, CA. I couldn't ask for more, except...

Gray Whale in the Klamath River, August 11, 2011
After approximately 54 days of fascinating scientists and tourists alike, the female gray whale that entered the Klamath River in late June has died.
Scientists from Humboldt State University reported yesterday afternoon that the whale's health was quickly deteriorating. Most noticeably, the whale began to breathe more frequently and appeared to have trouble swimming in an upright manner.
Finally, last night at approximately 7:00 p.m., scientists and a veterinarian watched helplessly as the whale stranded on a sandbar in the river, in about three feet of water, south of the U.S. Highway 101 bridge. Accompanied by scientists from HSU, and members of the Yurok Tribe, the whale passed away at about 4:30 a.m. this morning.
Veterinarians and researchers from The Marine Mammal Center in Sausalito, Calif., have arrived to assist with the necropsy that will be performed on the animal to hopefully gain some insight into what led to the whale's unusual foray into the freshwater river and what ultimately caused her death.
The female gray whale and its calf were first observed in the Klamath River on June 24th. The calf apparently weaned itself and returned to the ocean on July 23 leaving the mother behind. Attempts to move the adult whale out of the river back to the ocean using water spray, killer whale and gray whale sounds, banging of pipes and other methods were attempted but were unsuccessful.

Rural Cleansing on the Klamath River
The phrase rural cleansing has been thrown around for years within the highly conservative circles of the so-called property rights movement, it appeared as the title of a July 2001 opinion piece in the Wall Street Journal. The Klamath Basin has a horrific history of rural cleansing, or more accurately cultural genocide. When we talk about cultural genocide as seen in government supported massacre of the areas original inhabitants no one listens. But when the tea party blames the restoration of natural resources in the Klamath basin for destroying their lifestyle, its called rural cleansing. From one rural white settler to another...your tea party rhetoric is offensive, its perpetuating white supremacy.
In loving memory of Rani Raur.
