Aarhus is notable for its musical history. In the 1950s many jazz clubs sprang up around the city, fuelled by the young population. By the 1960s, the music scene diversified into rock and other genres. In the 1970s and 1980s, Aarhus became the centre for Denmark's rock music fostering many iconic bands such as Arosia, Botha Christensen, Blue Sun, Holger Laumann, Tears, Allan Mortensen, MIchael Learns to Rock, Daisy, Kliche, Kim Kixx, Tina Dickow, Poul Krebs, Bamses Venner, Anne Linnet Jepsen, De Nattergale, Jacob Haugaard, Punkt 22, Per Møller, Uffe Steen, Warm Guns, Birgit Lystager, Henning Stærk, Løse Ris, Booze Brothers, Østjydsk Musikforsyning, The Stuff, Thunderbirds, Aarhus Jazz Orchestra, Birthe Kjær, Shaking Phantoms, Thomas Helmig, Lis Sørensen, Carpark North, Go go Berlin, Lars H.U.G., Velvet Volume, Shit & Chanel, Nephew, Boom, Box 72, Sko og Torp, Rama, Roger&Over, McPsens, Shades of Blue, På Slaget 12, Nice Little Penquins, L.O.C., Medina, Mek Pek, Lars Muhl, TV-2 and Gnags.
Aarhus Festuge (Aarhus Festival) is a 10-day arts and culture festival in the city of Aarhus, Denmark. It takes place every year in late August to early September, in week 35-36. Since its start in 1965, the festival has grown to become one of the largest cultural events in Scandinavia and showcases a mix of local, national and international artists. Aarhus Festuge was established in 1964, debuted in September 1965 and has since then become one of the largest themed festivals in northern Europe.
Every year a new theme is chosen for the festival, and events, exhibitions and venues are planning accordingly. Examples of themes from recent years, includes The Future Is Near! (2009), Neighbours (2010), Beautiful Mistakes (2011), BIG (2012). The theme for the 2017 fest is Bridging and it takes place from 24. August to 3. September. A new specially designed art-poster for Aarhus Festuge is issued each year.
Aarhus (Danish pronunciation: [ˈɒːhuːˀs] ( listen); officially spelled Århus from 1948 until 31 December 2010) is the second-largest city in Denmark and the seat of Aarhus municipality. It is located on the east coast of the Jutland peninsula, in the geographical centre of Denmark, 187 kilometres (116 mi) northwest of Copenhagen and 289 kilometres (180 mi) north of Hamburg, Germany. The inner urban area contains 264,716 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2016) and the municipal population is 330,639 (as of 2016).[2] Aarhus is the central city in the East Jutland metropolitan area, which had a total population of 1.378 million in 2016.[3]
The history of Aarhus began as a fortified Viking settlement founded in the 8th century and with the first written records stemming from the bishopric seated here from at least 948. The city was founded on the northern shores of a fjord at a natural harbour and the primary driver of growth was for centuries seaborne trade in agricultural products. Market town privileges were granted in 1441, but growth stagnated in the 17th century as the city suffered blockades and bombardments during the Swedish Wars. In the 19th century it was occupied twice by German troops during the Schleswig Wars but avoided destruction. As the industrial revolution took hold, the city grew to become the second-largest in the country by the 20th century.
Today Aarhus is at the cultural and economic core of the region and the largest centre for trade, services and industry in Jutland. The city ranks as the 92nd largest city in the European Union, and as number 234 among world cities. It is also a top 100 conference city in the world.[4] Aarhus is the principal industrial port of the country in terms of container handling and an important trade hub in Kattegat. Major Danish companies have based their headquarters here and people commute for work and leisure from a wide area in Region Midtjylland. It is a centre for research and education in the Nordic countries and home to Aarhus University, Scandinavia's largest university, including Aarhus University Hospital and INCUBA Science Park. Being the Danish city with the youngest demographics, with 48,482 inhabitants aged under 18,[2] Aarhus is also one of the fastest growing Danish cities, with an average growth of 4,000 people per annum since 2010.
Aarhus is notable for its musical history. In the 1950s many jazz clubs sprang up around the city, fuelled by the young population. By the 1960s, the music scene diversified into rock and other genres. Film OM AARHUS KULTURBY 2017
Frederiksbjerg is a borough in Aarhus, Denmark. It is located just south of the historical city centre, separated from it by a broad railway yard and connected by three bridges. Despite being part of the inner city, Frederiksbjerg has its own charm and character and express some of the first large scale attempts to plan the development of Aarhus as a city. With around 20,000 inhabitants, it is basically a residential area, but with three large shopping streets; Bruunsgade, Jægergårdsgade, and Frederiks Allé.
History
Frederiksbjerg was annexed by Aarhus in 1874, when the city limits was moved south from the railway yard. The city was at bursting point for expansion, due to the accelerating industrialization and population growth, and new building sites were desperately needed. From 1870-75 Frederiksbjergs population rose from just 300 to 2000 citizens and with the building of the new bridge of Bruuns Bro, the admission accelerated further. This development inspired the City Council to adopt a strategy of large scale city planning, something hitherto unheard of in Aarhus and Denmark in general. Several plans was proposed and worked out, but the architect Hack Kampmann and city engineer to Copenhagen Charles Ambt's innovative plan from 1898, ended up as the most influential. Frederiksbjerg was soon fully developed and populated thereafter.
