Bird's eye view of world famous Knob Creek night shoot
For the sixth year running, I attended the Knob Creek Machine Gun Shoot. It’s a twice yearly event that attracts upwards of 20,000 people. It’s a spectacular event that should be attended by everyone at least once in their life.
Over the years, I’ve gotten to know the Sumner family who run the event and range and they were good enough to let me fly my camera-equipped drone over the night shoot. I got some spectacular video footage. Check it out.

Epic Machine Gun Shoot Event In Kentucky, October 2016/17
Held in April and October, The World's Largest Machine Gun Shoot and Military Gun Show is an event that draws machine gun dealers, collectors and enthusiasts from all over the country. The Machine Gun Shoot itself consists of several rounds of firing at a wide variety of appliances, vehicles and pyramids of tires. Participants also have the opportunity to shoot at barrels of fuel with pyrotechnic charges attached, which explode when struck by bullets. The objective for these shooters is to destroy everything down range. The presence of many rare and powerful fully automatic weapons also draws many visitors, with firearms ranging from submachine guns to .50 BMG heavy machine guns and M134 Miniguns.
The main event of the Machine Gun Shoot is the Night shoot where, after dark, gasoline-filled metal drums and explosives are set up in and around the targets, and tracer ammunition is used.
Although reserving a lane for the machine gun shoot is difficult with a several-years-long waiting list, lane holders usually rent the use of their weapons to spectators for a nominal fee to cover the cost of ammunition and wear and tear on the guns themselves.

ABC News: Slaughter in Syria & KY Knob Creek Gun Range
How could this happen?! This is a stunning, embarrassing error for one of the nation's biggest news outlets. The video aired on Sunday's World News Tonight AND Monday's GMA. I'm told that ABC is investigating what went wrong... But so far, as the NYT noted, the network is declining to comment on how the mix-up had happened.
News organizations have various systems for vetting footage to verify authenticity. Claire Wardle, executive director of First Draft, an organization that fights online disinformation, said that this sort of situation should be “relatively easy” to avoid by using tools like reverse-image search.
ABC aired supposedly shocking footage Monday and Sunday purporting to be from the frontline battle between the Syrian Kurds and the invading Turks. The only problem is, the footage appears to come from a nighttime machine gun demonstration at the Knob Creek Gun Range in West Point, Kentucky.
'An ABC source said the video was difficult to verify because the person who sent it described security concerns, as well as a sensitive position along the border'.
Why is this footage being used as October 2019 Turkish assaults on Kurdish towns?

Knob Creek Machine Gun Shoot Spring 2018 Night Shoot
Knob Creek Gun Range is Kentucky’s premier outdoor shooting range. We offer a 350 yard outdoor range for firearms such as pistols, rifles and shotguns. . Located just 20 miles south of Louisville and 12 miles north of Ft. Knox we are just minutes away for your convenience.
The history extends back to 1920, when the Kurds, the largest ethnic group in the world not to have a state of their own,
were promised autonomy in the Treaty of Sèvres. But the two great powers of the day, Britain and France, reneged in 1923 and
carved up the Kurdish territories into modern-day Turkey, Iran, Iraq, and Syria. The Kurds rebelled against this betrayal and
were crushed by their new British, French, Iranian, and Turkish colonizers. After decades of relative quiet, the Kurds tried again to achieve
autonomy in the aftermath of Iraq’s 1958 revolution, which saw the overthrow of the Hashemite monarchy.

Subgun fun at the Knob Creek machine gun shoot
Submachine gun shooting competitions are one of the least known shooting disciplines in the US. This is a result of the restricted nature of the firearms involved.
Subgun shoots can only occur in states where NFA firearms are legal. One such state is Kentucky, and a subgun shooting competition is held at every Knob Creek machine gun shoot. This event takes place near the town of West Point, Kentucky twice a year in April and October. Guns.com filmed at the event in October 2017.
Full auto shooting is the ultimate as far as I'm concerned. said Mike Rouse, who was a competitor at the Knob Creek shoot. I do USPSA pistol and some trap shooting, but this is absolutely the ultimate. There's no better than a subgun competition.
Unlike IDPA or IPSC events, subgun competitions utilize fully automatic submachine guns.
I shoot a lot of IDPA based shooting as well. Said John Bosio, a competitor at the Knob Creek shoot. But this is something totally different. It's not nine targets set, or an an eighteen round course. You got to think.
Competitors must knock down dozens of small stationary and moving targets with fully automatic machine guns.
I got into it twenty years ago with my husband. said Deb Jordan, a competitor at the Knob Creek shoot. You're a little nervous when you go up, but as soon as the beeper goes off, you just go with it. You're very relaxed. It's a lot of fun.
Competitors are judged on speed, accuracy, and how many rounds they fire.
I shoot subgun because my dad got me into it. Said Max Schillig, a competitor at the Knob Creek shoot. He's been doing it a few years. I just come out here to compete against the best in the nation, and to compete against him and hopefully beat him some times.
I get as enjoyment out of watching him shoot as I do out of shooting myself. Said Ed Schillig, Max's father and a competitor at the shoot. It's just neat watching him develop over the last four years, and being able to handle the gun better and carry the load.
Excellent trigger discipline is required, along with lots of ammunition.
We're not just out here blasting away. Said Sean Callahan, who was out with him family competing at the Knob Creek shoot. The selector's set in full auto but you're trying to mostly get get single shots. So there's actually an enormous amount of skill that goes into it.
Every year you get a little bit better at it. Said Max Schillig. Because you learn things from other people, what they do. And then you just pick up your own way of how to shoot the subgun.
Submachine guns are often modified to reduce their rate of of fire to make them more controllable.
The original upper shoots about twelve to sixteen hundred rounds per minute. Said Ed Schillig, referring to his MAC-11 submachine gun. With the Lage Manufacturing conversion, it shoots about 650 to 750 rounds per minute. It makes it a lot more controllable, makes your mags last a little bit longer, and really helps you in the competitions. I like just putting a lot of lead downrange.
A competitor in a typical subgun competition can fire anywhere between 300 and 800 rounds.
As with all shooting sports, more females are discovering how much fun it is to shoot.
There's a lot more females here than there were even in April when I came just to watch. Said Johannah Zabal, who was competing at the October event.
It's nice to see the younger ladies continue the tradition. Said Deb Jordan.

Trump Lashes Out At ABC News For Airing Fake Syria Bombing Video
On Sunday, New York-based ABC News broadcast a video allegedly showing a Syrian border town being bombed by the Turkish military, which later appeared to be footage from a nighttime machine gun demonstration in Kentucky.
US President Donald Trump has lambasted American broadcaster ABC News for airing a video from Knob Creek Gun Range in the town of West Point, Kentucky, claiming that the network used footage from the facility to depict a Turkish attack on Kurdish civilians in northern Syria. Trump called the mistake “a big scandal” and “a real disgrace”.
The video, which ABC foreign correspondent Ian Panell claimed to have been “obtained by ABC News”, was first aired by the channel on Sunday during the programme World News Tonight with host Tom Llamas claiming that it showed the “horrific atrocities” of “Turkey’s military bombing Kurd civilians in a Syrian border town”.
“One week since President Trump ordered US forces out of that region, effectively abandoning America’s allies in the fight against [ISIS*], Llamas said during the broadcast.
However, after several questions about the video's authenticity were raised by social media users, other news outlets decided to carry out a comparative analysis, eventually concluding that the video was identical to footage from a military gun demonstration that was filmed in Kentucky during a biannual event called “Military Gun Shoot & Military Gun Show” and published on YouTube in 2017, according to Gizmodo media.
ABC eventually took the video down, with network representatives saying that the channel “regrets the error”.
