Knysna, a pearl of the scenic Garden Route, is situated between George and Plettenberg Bay. Perennially green thanks to a Mediterranean Maritime climate with rain falling throughout the year, Knysna is mantled by indigenous forests extending into the Tsitsikamma National Park area. Nestled between the impressive Outeniqua Mountains and the Indian Ocean, the culinary capital of oysters and other delectable seafood is a compulsory stopover on every traveler's itinerary. At the heart of Knysna is a lagoon protected from the sea by the monolithic sandstone Heads Webcam– best explored on board a catamaran or from along hiking paths in the Featherbed Nature Reserve. A hotspot for art and craft, as well as adventure activities such as tree canopy gliding, kloofing and abseiling, Knysna offers something to everybody.
The peculiarity of the origin of the place-name Knysna is commonly explained with a light-hearted joke of two German tourists traveling to Knysna, and upon reaching the lookout point on the eastern Knysna Head, the one says to the other: 'Nice, na?'. On a more serious note, Knysna is believed to be derived from a Khoi word for place of wood, or fern leaves, but most probable straight down or hard to reach - referring to the steep Knysna Heads.

Part 1 of our recent holiday in Knysna, Janine and I stayed in the awesome Cliffhanger Cottages overlooking the beautiful mountain ranges. This you should add to your places to stay in Kynsna list. This is definitely one to put on your list of places to stay in South Africa when looking for a weekend away. So many things to so in knysna.

Knysna (/ˈnaɪznə/; probably from a Khoikhoi word meaning ferns)[3][4] is a town with 51,078 inhabitants in the Western Cape Province of South Africa and is part of the Garden Route. It lies 34 degrees south of the equator, and is 72 kilometres east from the town of George on the N2 highway, and 25 kilometres west of Plettenberg Bay on the same road.

The town is primarily built on the northern shore of a large warm-water estuary, known as the Knysna Lagoon, which is fed by the Knysna River. The estuary opens to the ocean after passing between two large headlands. These are popularly known as The Heads, and have become infamous due to the loss of boats and fishermen passing through their treacherous and unpredictable waters. The Paquita, a German vessel, sank on the eastern side of the Knysna Heads way back in 1903. Near them are geological formations, known locally as The Map Stones. To the north of Knysna, Afro-Montane or temperate rainforest covers the hilly terrain for 20 km until changing to fynbos or macchia high in the Outeniqua Mountains.

Fishing with Richard in Knysna
In our insert FISHING WITH RICHARD, we were taken off to the sand banks of Leisure Isle at low tide, where the boys demonstrate how to collect bait - but not the ordinary prawn type bait. To me the process looked rather pain staking and extremely technical, but I suppose it is all part of the pleasurable experience of fishing. Perhaps certain of you will learn a thing or two watching these boys dig deep into the soggy sands of our shores - otherwise if you already know how, you may just get a good chuckle watching them dig deep into the soggy sands of our shores.

After we finished t Wild Coast Hike spent 2 daysin Coffee bay then procceded to go camping at the Addo Elephant Park close to Grahamstown.There after we hit uo the Oyster festival in Knysna and went to check out the Knysna heads. heres what went down.
Eating Oysters in Knysna
Oysters are the main ingredient in the success of the festival. Every year around 200 000 oysters are consumed. There are a few ways to eat an oyster, the most common way is to eat it raw with salt and pepper, lemon juice and tobasco sauce. Another popular way is to grill the oysters with a creamy garlic butter sauce. Knysna has its very own sub species of wild oyster which can only be found along the Knysna coastline. People from all over the world come to Knysna this time of year to get the chance at tasting these fresh wild oysters.
The Knysna Oyster Festival was first held in 1983 and it was started by a local business man named Dick Ginsberg. Together with Rose Smith they organized the Knysna Winter Festival which included a marathon, rugby, golf, squash, and bowls. The purpose of the festival is to attract people to Knysna during winter when the region is quiet. The festival has grown over the years to gain a lot of involvement from the community. It also includes charities to make sure everybody in Knysna benefits from the local economy boost they get from the festival every year.

I continued down the Garden Route in South Africa to the town of Knysna. Again, I was blown away by how beautiful the coastline is. I didn't expect so much of the coast of South Africa to be this stunning which is probably my own fault. I really did expect South Africa to be more like you see on all the ads. I was actually very pleased to find out it is the way it is. There is such variety to the country. This video from Knysna again shows some of that beautiful diversity.
