The Hyogo Prefectural Museum of Art is a modern and contemporary art museum found along the waterfront in the newly developed HAT Kobe district. It was built as part of the city's recovery efforts after the 1995 Great Hanshin Earthquake. It was designed by Ando Tadao, one of Japan's leading contemporary architects who has designed museums on Naoshima, Omotesando Hills and the Tokyo Sky Tree among other famous buildings.
The museum is the largest of its kind in western Japan. It hosts exhibitions of paintings, prints, sculptures and other artwork by both foreign and Japanese artists. Its permanent exhibition displays a rotating collection of modern and contemporary art and features artists with strong ties to Hyogo Prefecture. The Kobe City Museum was opened in 1982, combining the collections of the Kobe Archaeological Museum with Namban Art Museum into a single one. The museum's permanent exhibition features an interesting collection of maps from various regions and eras of Japan, and also artifacts representing Japan's exchange with foreign countries from earliest cultural imports from China and Korea to trading goods that entered Kobe after its port was opened to foreign trade in the 19th century.
The museum also has one of the world's largest collections of Namban Art (Southern Barbarian Art), a Japanese art style that developed out of the first contacts with Western trade ships (which came to Japan from the South) in the 1500s. The rotating exhibits include colorful paintings and folding screens which depict scenes of early Japanese contacts with foreign traders and missionaries or were affected by European art design.
The museum also holds temporary special exhibitions on a limited time basis.

Meriken Park is a pleasant waterfront park in Kobe's port area. Built on an outcropping of reclaimed area, the park is covered in grassy lawn and open courtyards dotted with a collection of modern art objects and fountains. It is home to some of the city's landmark contemporary architecture such as the red Kobe Port Tower and the Kobe Maritime Museum.
The park was seriously affected by the 1995 Great Hanshin Earthquake, but has now become a popular spot for locals and tourists again. A small memorial in the park commemorates the many victims who were killed in the port in the earthquake. It preserves a short section of damaged waterfront as a reminder of the earthquake's immense, destructive power.

INUJIMA & SHODOSHIMA (2/2) • JAPAN'S ART ISLANDS & MONKEYS!
Part 2/2 of our exploration of islands around inland Seto sea of Japan. (See part 1/2 for Naoshima 直島 & Teshima 豊島).
Here we explore Inujima (which means Dog Island 犬島) & Shodoshima (or Bean Island 小豆島).
Exploring Inujima Seirensho Art Museum & various art house projects around the island, we explore how Hiroshi Sambuichi breathes “new life” into the ruins of a former copper refinery.
At Shodoshima, we visit the island’s famous Angel Road, Olive Garden & take a ride up to Choshikei Monkey Park (銚子渓自然動物園お猿の国) to play with the most adorable & friendliest monkeys ever!
Though we covered most of the major islands, there’s no denying that there are still many amazing islands to explore like Megijima (女木島)
& Ogijima (男木島).
Thanks for the beautiful weather overall and hope you enjoy!

Two burglars busted for stealing Ksitigarbha statues from Kobe shrines
According to the Yomiuri Shimbun, several Ksitigarbha statues were stolen from shrines around Kobe City between October 4th and October 10th. Nagata Police Station announced last Friday that they had arrested two men in their 20s in late October for stealing nine Ksitigarbha statues from shrines in Kobe and Hyogo and selling them at local pawn shops. Police said they would send the case to the public prosecutor's office.
Shuhei Iwamoto was busted for ripping off 80,000 yen (US$ 800) from a Gyudon (beef bowl) shop in Kobe in late October. During questioning, he allegedly admitted to a string of Ksitigarbha statue thefts. Police said he admitted breaking into several Ksitigarbha temples in early October and making off with seven Ksitigarbha statues. He later exchanged them for 3,000 yen (US$ 30) each in cash at a pawn shop.
Another burglar also began stealing after hearing from Iwamoto how he'd got cash for the statues. Hiroshi was arrested for stealing two Ksitigarbha statues after Iwamoto told police.
The Ksitigarbha statues have played an important roles in resident's lives since they were pulled from the debris of the Kobe Earthquake in 1995. The stolen statues were reportedly returned to their respective shrines after the arrests.

NAOSHIMA & TESHIMA JAPAN (1/2) • EXPLORING JAPAN'S ART ISLANDS
Located deep in the inland Seto sea of Japan, a few friends & I ventured out to the former fishing village islands which have become beautiful destinations for contemporary art in recent years.
Using Takamatsu as a base, we ventured around Naoshima, Teshima, Inujima & Shodoshima to cover as much as we could with about 4 full days + 2 half-ish days.
Here’s a recap of the museums we visited and the way we planned our trip / budgets - the islands are such a nice break away from city life and just so relaxing to bike around and wander.
This covers the first 3 days of the trip (mainly Naoshima & Teshima islands) with the part 2 vid to follow soon (covering Inujima & Shodoshima)!
Photos/videos don’t do these islands justice - these islands have so much to offer and have to be first handedly experienced!
