Kochi: The Tale of Sakamoto Ryoma - VISIT KOCHI JAPAN
Sakamoto Ryoma (1835-1867) was born in the castle town of Kochi in 1835. He was the man who created an opportunity to overthrow the Tokugawa shogunate. While there were groups that were thinking of toppling the Tokugawa regime by force, Ryoma proposed overthrowing the shogunate in a peaceful fashion without war. The Tokugawa regime accepted his proposal and abdicated political power to the imperial court. He was active in many fields, and when he was 30, he launched Japan’s first shipping and trading company called “Kameyama Shachu” in Nagasaki. He is said to have been the first person in Japan to go on a honeymoon. He traveled throughout Japan in the last years of the Edo period until he was assassinated in Kyoto on his 33rd birthday.
There are many spots related to Ryoma in Kochi Prefecture.
Pay a visit to Kochi Castle, Katsurahama, or Sakamoto Ryoma Memorial Museum to get a feel for his accomplishments and the dream he had of going out into the world.

Kochi, Japan
Kochi is the capital city of Kōchi Prefecture located on the island of Shikoku in Japan. The total area is 309.22 km2. A symbol of the city is its most famous dish, katsuo tataki, made by lightly searing and seasoning tuna. The city has an estimated population of 332,059.
Kochi boasts several attractions of interest to travelers. A well preserved, original hilltop castle from the feudal period marks Kochi's downtown. Nearby on another mountain, Godaisan, pilgrims visit Chikurenji Temple, one of the 88 temples along the Shikoku Pilgrimage. The city is also the proud home of Sakamoto Ryoma, who played a role in realizing the Meiji Restoration. The Sakamoto Ryoma Memorial Museum is located at the beautiful Katsurahama Beach, just south of the city center.
Japanese Paper Making (和紙 Washi) in Kochi, Japan
Learn all about the ancient art of Japanese Paper Making!
Let's visit Kochi, Japan. Along the southeastern coastline of Shikoku Island, you will find this culturally rich city full of exquisite nature and abundant history. Now becoming one of the newest ports-of-call during Japan itineraries by the major cruise lines, Kochi is definitely a city where you will want to take a second look.
In addition to the historical townscapes such as Kochi Castle, old sake breweries, traditional markets and hot springs, you definitely want to experience one of the region's most famous cultural traditions, Tosa Washi - the art of handmade Japanese paper. Today, we visit Tosawashi Kogeimura Qruad Paper Making Craftwork Village.
The word 和紙 (Washi) comes from wa meaning Japanese and shi meaning paper. Washi is made using fibers from the inner bark of the gampi tree, the mitsumata shrub, or the paper mulberry (kozo) bush. As a Japanese craft, it is registered as a UNESCO intangible cultural heritage.
The Tosa brand of high-quality washi (Japanesed paper) handmade in Kochi Prefecture has a history of more than 1,000 years. It has been designated by the central government as traditional craftwork and is being produced in areas including Tosa City and Ino Town. In Ino, 0.03-mm-thick Tosa tengujoshi, the world’s thinnest handmade paper, is manufactured. At Tosawashi Kogeimura (craftwork village) Qraud and Japanese Paper Museum in Ino, you can experience papermaking, and create your own original postcards and paper fans, among other items.
Kochi is also known as “Tosa, the Land of Sake.” The locals are not shy to tell you about their many sake drinking games. Additionally, particularly unusual in Japan culture, Kochi women are very involved in the drinking culture. They serve meals on large plates instead of many small ones so they can serve quickly and then immediately join in the drinking comradery.

Kochi in Shikoku Japan has a spectacular waterfront, port, Aki,
Kōchi Prefecture comprises the southwestern part of the island of Shikoku, facing the Pacific Ocean. It is bordered by Ehime to the north-west and Tokushima to the north-east. It is the largest but least populous of Shikoku's four prefectures. Most of the province is mountainous, and in only a few areas such as around Kōchi and Nakamura is there a coastal plain. Kōchi is famous for its many rivers. Inamura-yama in Tosa-cho is the highest peak in Kōchi prefecture with an altitude of 1,506 meters above sea level.
As of April 1, 2012, 7% of the total land area of the prefecture was designated as Natural Parks, namely the Ashizuri-Uwakai National Park; Ishizuchi, Muroto-Anan Kaigan, and Tsurugisan Quasi-National Parks; and eighteen Prefectural Natural Parks.[4]

Castles in Japan Japanology
Japanese castles (城 shiro) were fortresses constructed primarily of wood and stone. They evolved from the wooden stockades of earlier centuries, and came into their best-known form in the 16th century. Castles in Japan were built to guard important or strategic sites, such as ports, river crossings, or crossroads, and almost always incorporated the landscape into their defenses.
Though they were built to last and used more stone in their construction than most Japanese buildings, castles were still constructed primarily of wood, and many were destroyed over the years. This was especially true during the Sengoku period (1467–1603), when many of these castles were first built. However, many were rebuilt, either later in the Sengoku period, in the Edo period (1603–1867) that followed, or more recently, as national heritage sites or museums. Today there are more than one hundred castles extant, or partially extant, in Japan; it is estimated that once there were five thousand. Some castles, such as the ones at Matsue and Kōchi, both built in 1611, remain extant in their original forms, not having suffered any damage from sieges or other threats. Hiroshima Castle, on the opposite end of the spectrum, was destroyed in the atomic bombing, and was rebuilt in 1958 as a museum.
The character for castle, '城', by itself read as shiro (its kun'yomi), is read as jō (the Chinese-derived on'yomi) when attached to a word, such as in the name of a particular castle. Thus, for example, Osaka Castle is called Ōsaka-jō (大阪城) in Japanese.

Accessibility At Wakayama Castle and Ninja History at Eunji!
In this episode, we visit Wakayama Castle to see how the Ninja are assisting the community in a new way. I haven't seen many castles in Japan address accessibility, so this was a really cool thing to experience.
Then we visit Eunji temple where I experience zen meditation, learn some history, and purchase my first ever Goshuin-cho -- a special stamp book you can use to collect personal signatures at shrines and temples with across Japan.
