India: Stuntman Chanchal Lahiri drowns in Houdini trick gone wrong | DW News
Indian stuntman Chanchal Lahiri, who called himself the wizard Mandrake, said he wanted to revive interest in magic by replicating a Houdini-inspired trick. And so India's iconic Howrah Bridge, in Kolkata, became the scene of a dangerous underwater escape that went horribly wrong. Under the bridge near Kolkata, Lahiri was tied up with a heavy rope and steel chains secured by six locks. He was then lowered by crane into the Hooghly River. After 10 minutes he still hadn't re-emerged, to the horror of onlookers, which included members of his family. Rescue teams found Chanchal Lahiri's body, still in chains, washed up a kilometer from where he entered the water. This wasn't Lahiri's first underwater stunt and he knew the risks.

Kolkata, India, was the first city I visited when I went to India, and after traveling throughout the northern part of the country, Kolkata was one of my favorite cities. It sure is huge and chaotic as you would expect, yet at the same time it's such a fascinating city full of life, culture, and lots of delicious food. Now let's get right into these top 11 things to do in Kolkata, India.
1. Mother Teresa Home - The first thing on the list is the Mother Teresa home which in Kolkata is just known as Mother's Home. It's the location where Mother Teresa lived, worked, and influenced many many people. At the small Catholic mission you can go inside, see Mother's tomb where she's buried and also see the room where she spent much of her time writing and thinking. There's also a small little museum where you can see some of her possessions.
2. Victoria Memorial Hall - Second on the list of top things to do in Kolkata (Calcutta) is the Victoria Memorial Hall which happens to be one of the most important landmarks in the entire city. The outside of the hall, which is built in Victorian style, is surrounded by nice gardens where you can walk around. The entrance to the park is just 4 Rupees. If you choose to go to the inside, the cost is 150 Rupees and you can get into the museum.
3. South Park Street Cemetery - One of the spookiest attractions in Kolkata (Calcutta), is the South Park Street Cemetery, a dark garden that's full of huge tombs. The cemetery is free to enter, though they'll ask your for a donation when you either enter or exit.
4. Khalighat Kali Temple - Dedicated to the Hindu Goddess of Kali, is the most famous and sacred Hindu Temple in Kolkata (Calcutta). The temple is nearly always busy and in order to enter you've got to take off your shoes. Surrounding the temple is a busy market. Be careful when you visit the Kalighat Temple, there are many scams and people people that will ask for donations.
5. New Market - Next on this video list of Kolkata attractions is the New Market, sort of the center of the city with lots of energy. The New Market has an indoor section where you can shop for everything from clothes to electronics, but in my opinion, it's the outdoors area surrounding the market that's the most interesting. Here you'll find food, clothes, fruit, spices, and just about everything else you can possibly imagine. You can also have the opportunity to take a Kolkata human powered rickshaw in this area.
6. Indian Museum - Coming in next is the Indian Museum in Kolkata, one of the original museums in all of India. It's a huge museum and the highlight of the many exhibitions is the Egyptian mummy and numerous other valuable collections. The museum is also known as the Magic House.
7. Belur Math - Located north of the main part of the city is Belur Math, a private temple that's located along the banks of the Hooghly River. The temple is quiet and relaxing, and because they don't allow any videos or photos, I had to take the video from near the gate where they didn't have security.
8. Dakshineswar Kali Temple - Across and upstream the river from Belur Math is the huge Dakshineswar Kali Temple, one of the most famous Hindu temples in Kolkata. It's north of Kolkata, but it's worth a trip there to see the crowds and to see people bathing in the river.
9. Mullik Ghat Flower Market - Next up is the center flower market of Kolkata. The market, which is located below the Howrah Bridge, is just a fascinating sight of moving colorful flowers.
10. Terreti Market - Occupying Sun Yat Sen road, is the early morning Chinese food market which is known as Terreti Bazar. It makes a perfect place to get a morning breakfast of Chinese food when you're in town.
11. Kolkata Street Food - Last but not least for things to do in Kolkata is eat street food. There's a lot to eat and it's mouthwatering good!

1. National Library, Alipore – A Haunting in Kolkata!
People reading alone in the library have felt the presence of someone breathing down their neck; this is what people say about The National Library in Kolkata. This happens even more when they do not keep a book in place from where they took it from. It is also said that sounds of footsteps are heard near them. Apart from being the largest library in India, this spookiness in this library makes it one of the most haunted places in Kolkata. There are many stories which connect to these supernatural events taking place. Some believe that it is the ghost of the wife of Lord Metcalfe who keeps roaming in the halls. The librarians working there have also complained that they have felt their chairs being drawn away, books being dropped down and pages rifled. If ghosts who enjoy a good laugh and good books could easily be your favourite kind of ghosts, consider visiting this mysterious library!
Another eerie secret of this place opened when a mysterious room was discovered in this 250 year old building that nobody knew about. There is a spot just under the Howrah Bridge which is near the Mullick Ghat flower market which is believed to be center for various paranormal activities in Kolkata. The wrestlers who practice in that area on a daily basis claim that they see flailing hands in the river and they are not sure whether those hands are of human beings or some spirits playing tricks with them. People believe that there are the spirits of those people who lost their life in the Ganges- either by committing suicide or by drowning. You try to save the apparitions, you might end up losing your life!
3. Nimtala Shamshaan Ghat
The Nimtala Burning Ghat is one of the oldest burning ghats in Kolkata and is also considered to be one of the most haunted places in Kolkata. It is believed that on the night of the Kali Puja, the aghoris come to the ghat for their various rites and to invoke the Shamshaan Kali, who is believed to be their reigning deity. The locals believe that the name must not be said out loud. They feed on the left over flesh of the burnt bodies and use this ritual to generate occult powers in themselves. These occult rites and gory sacrifices have rendered the Nimtala Burning Ghat
4. Writer’s Building
No one works here after sunset! You ask why? The most powerful building of Kolkata is also one of the most haunted places in Kolkata. The Writer’s Building used to house the secretariat building of the state government of West Bengal. The empty rooms in this 300 year old building have some hidden secrets. Story has it that this building has been haunted for many decades and the caretakers staying here could not continue their job for more than one month. This was the place where famous revolutionaries Binay, Badal and Dinesh killed Captain Simpson of the East India Company. The large rooms in the building are said to be inhabited by the ghosts and someone’s shrieks are heard late at night even though the building is deserted after 7 pm.

INDIA: CALCUTTA: RAILWAY PLATFORM FAMILIES
Bengal/Nat
Hundreds of rural migrants, including many children, live wretched lives under the platforms at Tollygunj railway station in the Indian city of Calcutta.
Despite official warnings that the structure is weak, they remain in constant danger of injury or death.
This is the story of the railway platform children, who grow up amidst the rhythmic noise of passing trains.
Their parents came to Calcutta in search of work and whilst the city gave them a livelihood, it gave them no place to stay.
In this bustling Indian metropolis, the only shelter they could find for their families was under a railway platform.
It is risky and dangerous, with local trains speeding along the tracks- perilously close to the fragile homes.
The platform structure has become weak over the years and these makeshift shelters shake every time a train passes.
The railway officials have put up a notice board warning that the structure is weak and dangerous.
Whilst the notice says it should be vacated for repairs, those living there have nowhere to move to.
Most of them barely earn enough to keep their families alive.
So they ignore the warning and continue living there - desperately holding onto the shaky roof over their heads.
SOUNDBITE: (Bengali)
It is of course dangerous to live here. When the train comes we remove our children. This is how we live.
SUPER CAPTION: Ghansham Das, Resident
The railway children have to keep diving out of the way of the passing trains.
The trains come and go, but a perilous and precarious life continues for these poor children and their parents.

You can also see Kaali Ghat temple in this TVC.
Kalighat Kali Temple is a Hindu temple in West Bengal, India dedicated to the Hindu goddess Kali. It is one of the 51 Shakti Peethas.
Kalighat was a Ghat (landing stage) sacred to Kali on the old course of the Hooghly river (Bhāgirathi) in the city of Calcutta. The name Calcutta is said to have been derived from the word Kalighat. The river over a period of time has moved away from the temple. The temple is now on the banks of a small canal called Adi Ganga which connects to the Hoogly. The Adi Ganga was the original course of the river Hoogly (the Ganges). Hence the name Adi (original) Ganges.
The temple is visited by pilgrims from all over India irrespective of sectarian differences. The thousands of pilgrims who flock daily to the Kalighat temple treat Kali very much like a human mother, bringing her their domestic problems and prayers for prosperity, and returning when their prayers are fulfilled to express their gratitude. Their attitude towards the Goddess is guided by their religious traditions and training, their spiritual and intellectual capacities, and the guidance of their temple priests.
Calcutta, is the capital of the Indian state of West Bengal. Located on the east bank of the Hooghly River, it is the principal commercial, cultural, and educational centre of East India, while the Port of Kolkata is India's oldest port as well as its sole major riverine port. As of 2011, the city had 4.5 million residents; the urban agglomeration, which comprises the city and its suburbs, was home to approximately 14.1 million, making it the third-most populous metropolitan area in India. As of 2008, its economic output as measured by gross domestic product ranked third among South Asian cities, behind Mumbai and Delhi. As a growing metropolitan city in a developing country, Kolkata confronts substantial urban pollution, traffic congestion, poverty, overpopulation, and other logistic and socioeconomic problems.
