Manta Ray snorkeling aboard the Kona Style catamaran in Kailua-Kona Hawaii Big Island
#mantarays #snorkeling #bigisland We took a snorkeling cruise aboard the Kona Style catamaran in Kailua-Kona on the Big Island of Hawaii. It was one of the coolest things I’ve ever done. The crew was very nice and professional. The boat was very nice. It appeared new and clean. The manta rays are attracted to the plankton, which are attracted to the lights, so all the cruises have snorkelers hang onto surfboards with handles affixed, and use pool noodles to support their feet and keep them level with the water. The manta rays were super cool! And as they feed at night, the only way to see or experience them is to book a tour like this.

Hawaiʻi, also called the Island of Hawaiʻi, the Big Island or Hawaiʻi Island (/həˈwaɪ.i/ or /həˈwɑːiː/; Hawaiian: [həˈwɐiʔi] or [həˈvɐiʔi]), is an island located in the U.S. state of Hawaii. It is the largest and the southeastern-most of the Hawaiian islands, a chain of volcanic islands in the North Pacific Ocean. With an area of 4,028 square miles (10,430 km2), it is larger than all of the other islands in the archipelago combined and is the largest island in the United States. The island is often referred to as the Big Island to reduce confusion between the island and the state. It is coterminous with Hawaiʻi County and includes the Hilo Micropolitan Statistical Area.
As of the 2010 Census the population was 185,079.[3] The county seat and largest city is Hilo. There are no incorporated cities in Hawaiʻi County (see Hawaii Counties).

Shore Diving Big Island, Hawaii - Old Airport Dive Site | Kona Honu Divers
Some of the best shore diving on the big island is found in Kona Hawaii, and local Kona dive shop, Kona Honu Divers ( can give you a guide to the best shore diving big island tips & trips! Old airport dive site is great diving and it's about a 5 minute drive from the shop! It's well protected from the usual NW swell so it's a good option when sites like puako are not diveable. We took Laura Roberts of Dread Pirate Pottery along for a great shore dive. Old Airport dive site has some nice perks. Arches, blue water pelagic fish, and nice coral are just a few of the highlights. Old airport beach park is also a fantastic place to have picnic lunch after the dive with shower and restroom facilities along with shaded benches for chillaxin

Kona Coast Manta Ray Night Dive
This footage of a night dive that I did with Kona Honu Divers.
11 mantas in total showed up.
This was probably the best dive of my life so far!
The torches attract plankton to a certain area, so the mantas come and feed there.
They feed nightly all up and down the Kona Coast of Hawai'i's Big Island, the lights just bring them to one spot.
These dives were started by the Pacific Manta Research Foundation
This DOES NOT adversely affect their behaviour.

Wild Dolphin Swim- Kona, Hawaii
Aloha! These are the Nai'a or Hawaiian Spinner Dolphins of Kealakekua bay. People travel from all over the world for a chance to swim and meet with them. It is an amazing and magical experience to be close them. What most people don't understand is that this is their bedroom. Kealakekua, along with Honaunau (two-step), and Ho'okena bay are the homes of these pods. They are too small to go out into the open ocean and they stay close to their territorial bedrooms. These pods live in the southwestern part of the island and don't even travel to the northern part of the island unless they are escorting humpbacks as they leave. Humans have a compelling obsession with swimming with them, which is indeed a magical experience. Decades ago, it was not uncommon to see pods of well over 100 dolphins in the Kona area. Today the average pod size is 30-50. The reason for this is, unfortunately, love. At dawn each morning, the pods will arrive in one of these bays, scan the area for the contents and population of the bay, and chase out any unwanted predators so they can get a good days rest. Then they begin their process of winding down so they can rest. They are calm and playful at this time until 2-3 hours after dawn, when they begin to dive deeper and try to get their sleep. Unfortunately, these bedrooms are also favorite recreational sites for tourists and locals alike. It is presumed that a dolphin is acutely aware of any presence within 75' of them and will awaken to investigate. Because of the desire to swim with them, people either choose to or ignorantly chase and follow them, sometimes all day. This keeps them from getting the rest they need. Sadly the adolescents and infants are the most curious about humans and the ones who end up sacrificing their sleep to interact us. Because of the lack of rest, these dolphins often fall short of the pod and are unable to escape the dangers of the ocean at night when they are feeding. This is causing a lot of the females to be unable to live to reproduce therefore reducing the population of the pods. If you enter the water where they are, they know that you are there and will usually come investigate you, so there is no need to chase them. And it is illegal to swim with them, but they may choose to swim with you. If you love the dolphins, and you come to Hawaii, please help by spreading awareness of their plight, and respecting their space after 9 AM when they are resting. There is very little enforcement of the laws protecting the Nai'a and other marine life, but together we can make a difference by educating and spreading awareness so that future generations of humans and dolphins may have a chance to enjoy this beautiful paradise. The Nai'a have swam these waters for thousands of years, long before the first Polynesians arrived on these shores. With our help, our voices, they may still swim here for generations to come.
United Boeing 757-300 - Turbulence & Sea of Lights - from Kailua-Kona to Los Angeles
Join me on a 4 hour and 55 Minute ride across the Pacific Ocean from Kailua - Kona / Hawaii Big Island to Los Angeles LAX on a United Boeing 757-300
We encountered some moderate turbulence for while in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, triggered by active jetstream and the outer band of Hurricane Olaf.
Excellent view of the Los Angeles city lights during approach and landing.
Flight / flying was perfect, but the inflight service in United Domestic Business Class is the worst I've experienced.
