Places to see in ( Kailua-Kona - USA )
Places to see in ( Kailua-Kona - USA )
Kailua-Kona is a town on the west coast of Hawaii Island (the Big Island). Hulihee Palace is a former royal vacation home dating from 1838. Mokuaikaua Church, from the 1800s, is Hawaii’s oldest Christian church. On Kailua Bay, reconstructed thatched houses at Kamakahonu National Historic Landmark mark King Kamehameha I’s residence. Colorful coral lies off Kamakahonu Beach. Kailua Pier has boat moorings.
Kailua Kona, often referred to as Kona by the locals, is the main western city, population 34,000 (2012), of the Big Island of Hawaii. It is nestled on the western coast of the Hualalai Volcano. In ancient times, this area was considered the premier place to live due to the excellent weather and good water. Many kings made their homes here. It was the home of King Kamehameha I, who united the Hawaiian Islands. It was also here in Kailua-Kona that Kamehameha's son, King Liholiho, broke and officially abolished the ancient kapu system. Later, missionaries built churches and residences and planted coffee, turning the tiny fishing village into a small seaport. Now Kona has become known for sport fishing, snorkeling, sunsets and coffee, which is cultivated on the slopes of Mount Hualalai. Because the mountains block the northeasterly trade winds, Kona gets very little rain and enjoys more than 300 days of sunshine a year. Kona is also home to the Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament (August) and the Ironman Triathlon World Championship (October).
Traffic was pretty minor before, but in recent years has become more congested. Driving in tourist-oriented areas can be slow, but the town is generally not large enough to have serious problems. Walking is a manageable way to explore the town, but you should rent a car if you want to get to resorts, beaches and other cultural locations. Some free parking is available: When you enter Kailua via Palani Road (Hwy. 190), turn left onto Kuakini Highway, drive for about a block, and turn right into a parking lot marked with a green P sign. From there, go down some steps and walk makai (toward the ocean) on Likana Lane a half block to Ali`i Drive, and you'll be in the heart of Kailua-Kona.
Street addresses are confusing and consist of two parts. Hawaii Island is divided into nine zones, each of which are subdivided into nine sections. The first two digits of an address, before the hyphen, indicate the zone and its section. For example, Kailua-Kona is 75, Waikoloa 68, Captain Cook 81 and Hawi 55. The numbers following the hyphen are based on the distance from a predetermined starting point — usually a road intersection or a highway. The numbers run consecutively, with odd numbers on the left and even numbers on the right as you head away from the starting point. For example, addresses on Ali`i Drive increase as you head south, with even numbers on the ocean side of the Drive.
Kailua-Kona is a place for ocean and outdoor recreational activities. Surfing, fishing, diving, boating, snorkeling and swimming are all popular sports in Kailua-Kona, as are hiking, biking, caving, and four wheeling. In August, there is the Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament; in October, the Ironman Triathlon World Championship.

Kapaau, Kailua Kona & Kailua Hawaii Rainforest and Waterfall Hike
We saved and paid for our vacation before it began. The plan was to fly straight from Atlanta to Hawaii, spend the night, then get on a cruise ship for 7 days to see 4 of the islands. Deloris planned excursions at every stop including rainforest hikes with waterfall swimming, zip lining, watching a sunrise from atop a 10,000 foot crater and biking down it, a luau, surfing lessons, and a helicopter tour of one of the islands. Epic doesn't describe it all. What a great way for us to celebrate 10 years of marriage. Awesome!

Kona Hawaii - The BIG ISLAND is old Hawaii at its best.
Kona Hawaii is the most popular staging area for tourism on the Big Island of Hawaii. You can go mountain biking, surfing, scuba diving, explore active volcanoes or just hang out around town in Kona. There is only a small dock and no cruise ship terminal so ships visiting Kona use their tender boats to get passengers to shore.
This video is an original work created with photos and video I took in Kona Hawaii. Special effects and graphics were created on my computer with video editing software.

Young and old enjoy the West Hawaii Fitness Fair at Kailua-Kona
The West Hawaii Fitness Fair is gathering kids and adults at the Old Airport Baseball Field for an exciting and active learning experience. On hand for the event were: Coach David Bowden - a local Kona resident and a track and field Hall of Famer. Rayfield Wright - who played football in the national league for over 12 years with the Dallas Cowboys. Mr Wright played in five Super Bowl games and was inducted into the NFL Hall of Fame in 2006. Also present was Earnie Shavers - Boxing Hall of Fame inductee who fought such legends as Mohammad Ali. Shavers continues to hold the title as the hardest hitting heavyweight in the history of boxing.
Volunteers, sponsors and participants of all ages made this a fun event for all. See the article by West Hawaii Today:
Kona Inn in Kailua Kona Hawaii
The History of the Kona Inn...
In 1928 the Kona Inn was built by the Inter-Island Steam Navigation Company. This venture was considered to be a pioneering effort in the neighbor island hotel industry. Previous to the Kona Inn, the passengers aboard the company steamers had only haphazard room arrangements at outlying stops. An editorial in the Honolulu Star-Bulletin Feb. 7, 1928 summed up the enthusiasm of the new venture.

Hawaii '15
Even though I’ve been to Hawaii when I was a lot younger, I didn’t quite know what to expect from Hawaii this time around except for being lazy at the beaches. I quickly realized that both Oahu and Maui have way more to offer than I first thought. After 19 days of being in Hawaii, I felt like I barely scratched the surface of the things you can do here. Oahu and Maui definitely both exceeded my expectations of Hawaii.
Oahu - Maui
Oahu (7 days): Oahu is a perfect combination of city-life and paradise. It is filled with delicious restaurants (especially ramen and sushi), a decent nightlife scene, scenic hikes, and awesome beaches. Oahu Highlights: Seaside Hawaiian Hostel, Olomana Trail, Pillbox Trail, Diamond Head Trail, Waimanalo Beach, Hanama Bay, Lanikai Beach, Waikiki Beach, boating to the sand bars, Marukame Udon, Agu Ramen, Leonard’s Bakery, Helena’s Hawaiian Food, Ono Seafood, Lucky Belly, Duke’s, Doraku Sushi, Goma Tei Ramen, Side Street Inn, Rainbow Drive-In, spam breakfast at McDonald’s, Jon’s aftermath next to the Denny’s entrance, being awesome at that spearing game in Dave n’ Busters
Maui (12 days): Originally planned for 5 days in Maui, but I eventually decided to cancel my flight home and stayed an extra week. Maui definitely has a different vibe than Oahu as it seems more natural and has more of a town feel, but still just as amazing. I stayed in the city of Paia, which some consider to be the beachy hippy town of Maui. Also, since it was breeding season for humpback whales, you can almost look out in any direction in the ocean and see humpback whales jumping around or flipping their tails. Maui Highlights: Aloha Surf Hostel, Road to Hana, Paia Beach, Baldwin Beach, Black Sand Beach, Red Sand Beach, Hookipa Beach, Iao Valley Needle Hike, snorkeling with sea turtles near Black Rock, Lahaina, Blowhole, Dragon's Teeth, humpback whale watching, attempting to hitch-hike (semi-fail), Masquerade party at MACC, Sunday party at Little Beach, Paia Fish Market, Flatbread Company, Cafe Des Amis, Charley’s, Geste Shrimp Truck, poke at Tobi’s Shave Ice, poke at Safeway, poke at Foodland, spam musabi at Minit Stop, a stapling incident on the hostel’s table

Hilo Bodysurfing
Came up from the undersea wonder of a school of humuhumu'ele'ele (Hawai’ian black triggerfish - Melichthys niger) just in time for a nice little torpedo glide at a very mellow beach near Hilo. My advice for anyone looking to connect with the sea through wave riding: leave the boards and bad bro attitudes behind (this in itself is a long story) and find joy in the gift of the lower hanging fruit!

About Kailua, Hawaii
Kailua is a bay town on the east side of the island of Oahu. Oahu is one of the smaller Hawaiian Islands comprising 600 square miles of the state of Hawaii’s 6,400 total square miles. Although it is small, Oahu is the clear economic center of Hawaii. The capital of Hawaii, Honolulu, is on Oahu. Oahu is also home to 2/3 of Hawaii’s population – 950,000 of Hawaii’s total population of 1.4 million.
The town of Kailua boasts an amazing three mile stretch of white sand beach and turquoise green water. The land then rises gently briefly before rising sharply into lush green mountains with tall waterfalls.
The beauty of Kailua has made it the vacation place for President Obama when he vacations in Hawaii with his family. Kailua also has a military base just north of the Kailua Bay. Kailua is less than a half hour drive to the state capital, Honolulu, the airport, the University of Hawaii, and world famous Waikiki. Even so, Kailua has a small-town feel in part because the city does not allow large scale hotels.
Hawaii: Kona Beach
Clip of the beach on Kona Island
Hawaii's Kohala Coast.
In the shadow of Hawaii's volcanoes is paradise from the remote oasis on Hana under Haleakala on Maui to the Mauna Loa volcano and the South Kohala Coast under the Mauna Kea Volcano, at over 33,000 feet when measured from the ocean floor is higher than Mt Everest. Volcanoes, extinct and active are the source of Hawaii's beauty and energy. When it comes to energy, the Natural Energy Lab near Kona has been making waves. Originally focused on ocean thermal energy conversion, today the center is growing Maine lobsters in it's nutrient rich deep sea water, bottles treated water for Japan, has solar and wind power projects as well as biofuel algae. And for those with a lot of energy, there is the Ironman competition which includes a 2.4 mile ocean swim, a 26.21 mile run and a 112 mile bike ride from Kona to Hawi and back. Of course for those with a little more time on their hands, a relaxing visit to Hawi is like stepping into old Hawaii. Originally a thriving sugar plantation town and nearby birthplace of Kahmeamea I, today it has some historic buildings from the 1800s, with shops, restaurants and galleries. You can find old and new Hawaiiana from ceramic pineapples, body lotions and creams made from local coconuts and other fruits, Kona coffee beans and Hawaiian shirts. Bamboo restaurant is a popular spot... Formerly a grocery store, today it has live music on the weekends, a bar, and store. The specials on the. Emu the day I was there was naked chef and wild women. But I settled on the Vietnamese salad with grilled mahi mahi, spring rolls and noodles. A number of top resort hotels are along the Kohala Coast including the Hapuna Prince , a 350 room with a golf course and at the foot of the Hapuna Beach a half mile sandy beach considered to be one of the top in the country. Nearby is the Mauna Lani, home to the Orchid hotel and Mauna Lani hotel. The Two golf courses that intertwine between both hotels make up the north Nd south courses where the senior skins is played. Legendary holders have played there from Bob Hope to Arnold Palmer. At the Mauna Lani you can get an Aloha greeting from the carp. Water is a dominant theme at the Mauna Lani with waterfalls, ponds, and even a turtle habitat. Nearby shopping centers have restaurants like Tommy Bahamas and Ruth's Chris, but the economy has taken its toll on retail shops where there are lots of vacancies. The march 11. 2011 tsunami took it's toll on the Kona Village Resort which closed its doors after 45 years. The nearby Four Seasons resort with a Jack Nicolas golf course is a popular oceanfront alternative. The legendary Mauna Kea resort was created by Laurence Rockefeller in 1965 at a cost of $15 million ...at that time the highest price for hotel construction. After a total renovation following an earthquake in 2006, today the hotel has elegant oceanfront rooms and suites, with flat screen tvs, Internet. The stunning beach is considered one of the finest in Hawaii with white sand, turquoise waters and a gateway to the deep blue pacific ocean. There is snorkeling among the outer rocks and reefs, paddle boarding and when the winter swells arrive, surfing and boogie boarding. The Manua Kea has a spa with body treatments and facials ... And a selection of restaurants from Manta And Wine Pavilion which serves a comprehensive buffet breakfast from waffles and omelets to broiled salmon, bright red local tomatoes, Puna sunrise papayas. And local wild cats are ever ready for handouts. Other wildlife from real manta rays at night to the world's largest Mccaw parrots. At Number 3, the restaurant on the famous Robert Trent Jones golf course ... Every meal starts with huge popovers. Spicy tomato soup with a tuna melt sandwich is a great traditional dish or for something with a little more Hawaii try the cooked tuna poke salad. The driving range has all the amenities of a great golf course and with ocean and mountain views it's a challenge to keep your eye on the ball. Many of the holes (recently redesigned by Trent Jone's son, Reese) have ocean views and none are more classic than the 3rd hole where the ball crosses a ocean cove. Higher up on the course the winds can pick up. One needs to remember no matter what hole you are on, the greens run towards the ocean. Each evening, as the ancient blowing of the conch shells sounds the time to lite the tiki torches along the beachfront ... Locals and visitors take time out to watch the sunset and if luck is on their side .. Perhaps catch a green flash as the sun drops into the pacific.
