Koppal is a town in Koppal district in the Indian state of Karnataka. Koppal is surrounded on three sides by hills and was an important town in the history of Karnataka and also known as Kopana Nagara. It contains historical locations such as Koppal Fort, Gavimath and the Male Mallappa Temple. Koppal is known as Jaina Kashi meaning the most sacred place for Jains, so named because there were more than 700 Basadis - Jain prarthana mandirs. Koppal district was carved out of Raichur district, located in the northern part of Karnataka state, on 1st April 1998.
