Visiting 5 of Seoul’s Iconic Neighborhoods
Seoul is known as the City of the Future for good reason. South Korea’s capital has transformed into a modern, high-tech megalopolis in the last couple of decades. But old Seoul still exists, and it’s worth finding. In the Seoul installment of our “City Roots” series, we’re visiting the historic neighborhood of Bukchon Hanok, we’re basking in the serenity of the iconic Bongeunsa Temple, and we’re enjoying a fun night out on Euljiro Alley. A tour of the Korean Stone Art Museum and Huwon Secret Garden are on the agenda, too.

Severe cold wave grips Korea, Asia and eastern United States
전국 추위 계속 된다
We begin with the arctic chill that has descended over Korea in recent days and continues to bite.
Most of the country is still bearing the brunt of temperatures well below freezing on this Monday,... a day after Seoul shivered through its coldest day in 15 years.
Korea isn't the only place suffering though,... other parts of Asia and the eastern coast of the United States have been hit with dangerously icy and snowy blasts.
Lee Ji-won reports. The cold-wave watch has continued for an 8th-straight day in some parts of the country as Monday's temperatures remain low.
According to the nation's weather agency, the Monday morning temperature in Seoul was a bone-chilling minus 14 degrees Celsius, Daegu minus 11, and Busan minus 8.
Korea's southern regions also received warnings of heavy snow in the morning,... while a record 1-hundred-30 centimeters of snow piled up in eastern island of Ulleung-do.
But the temperatures are forecast to rise throughout the day.
Korea isn't the only country in the grips of a severe cold spell.
A massive blizzard struck the U.S. East Coast over the weekend, and at least 19 people have died in storm-related accidents.
A state of emergency has been declared in eleven states and about 12-thousand flights have been canceled.
Washington, D. C., was hit with 60 centimeters of snow, the second highest since 1922.
And the federal offices in the capital will be closed on Monday.
China is also experiencing a severe cold wave, with some northern provinces reporting seasonal lows of 48 degrees below zero.
Shanghai marked a record 35-year low of minus 7 degrees on Sunday, but conditions have eased with highs expected to reach 2 degrees.
In Taiwan, the temperature is projected to drop lower than on Sunday... to 3 degrees Celsius, which is more than 10 degrees lower than the average for January.
According to Taiwan's state-run Central News Agency, at least 52 people have died of hypothermia or cardiovascular disease caused by the cold snap.
Hong Kong saw its coldest day in nearly 60 years on Sunday as the mercury plunged to three degrees Celsius.
Temperatures in Korea are forecast to return to seasonal norms from Tuesday. The rest of the world should also feel some respite from icy weather later this week. Lee Ji-won, Arirang News.

[K-BIZ] Asia's Largest Arboretum / YTN KOREAN
South Korea has opened a huge-scale arboretum where visitors are allowed to encounter endangered Siberian tigers.
This botanic garden, called Baekdudaegan Arboretum and claimed to be Asia's largest, will play a key role to preserve threatened plants and animals.
The arboretum is located on a mountain range in the country's southeastern county of Bonghwa.
Built on a land site of over 5,000 hectares, the arboretum is also said to be the second largest of its kind in the world.
Two endangered Siberian tigers were unveiled to the public upon the opening of the arboretum. The last Siberian tiger in Korea was hunted in 1921, in the country's southeastern city Gyeongju.
Visitors to the Tiger Forest, covering an area of 4.8 hectares and surrounded by electric fences, will be able to take a glimpse at two tigers. They are 13-year-old female Hancheong and 7-year-old male Uri released into the wild.
Featuring 27 different garden exhibitions such as a children's garden, a rock garden, and a mirror garden, it is also home to 3.85 million plants of over 2,000 different botanic species.
[Kim Yong-Ha, head of Baekdudaegan National Arboretum]
“The arboretum focuses on collecting and preserving alpine plants. In addition, it will play a key role in securing and preserving the seeds of endangered wild plants worldwide permanently.
In addition, The arboretum houses other facilities such as Sea Vault, the world's sole repository of wild seed samples, as well as the Forest Environment Institute among others.
Now, here comes Baekdudaegan Arboretum, a completely new concept of botanic complex offering space for exhibitions, studies and healings altogether.

Seoul Korea VLOG | Full Time Travelling Family: Week 40
Seoul, Korea, has the best abandoned theme park we've been to yet. Yongma Land has been abandoned for a really long time, but many of the rides are still there. The place has become a bit of a hotspot for photoshoots and people seeking a mini adventure in Seoul. We had a great time, and the boys absolutely loved it. If you're planning to go for photos, try to time it to be there for sunset - the light is spectacular. And if you stay until it's dark, some of the lights on the rides actually turn on and it becomes really magical!

S. Korea to deploy extra transport for Chuseok holiday travelers
짧은 연휴… 추석 귀성길 12일 오전, 추석 당일 오후 귀경길 가장 혼잡
Millions of South Koreans will be traveling to their hometowns over the Chuseok holiday for family get togethers.
That means highways will be packed with cars.
Lee Min-sun provides a traffic forecast for Chuseok and some ways the government will be trying to keep things moving. Chuseok is one of Korea's biggest holidays, and it's also the time when people spend long hours on congested roads.
This year, most people will get 4 days off in a row, from Thursday through the weekend.
The transportation ministry has announced special traffic measures starting Wednesday.
A total of 33-and-a-half million people are expected to travel starting that day, and over 86% of them will go by car.
Because this year's holiday is relatively short, most people leaving Seoul are expected to hit the road Thursday morning and come back Friday afternoon.
On average, there'll be some 5 million cars on highways each day which is 7.5% more than last year.
Chuseok travelers should brace for a long trip. Drive times to major cities could be up to an hour and 50 minutes longer than last year from Seoul to Busan by car, an estimated 8-and-a-half hours.
Real-time traffic information is available on the website of the traffic authorities and on mobile applications.
To help, the government will add extra capacity on buses and trains on average, an additional 13-hundred express buses per day, another hundred-thousand seats on the high-speed trains and 34-thousand seats on the regular trains.
The government says it's also conducted security checks on the highways, trains, airports and seaports to ensure safety and is prepared to deal with emergencies.

Skiing in Alpensia, South Korea in December 2012
We went skiing in Alpensia Resort, South Korea in December. It was the first time being in such cold weather for the kids, and definitely the first time skiing. But they had fun and tried their best. Nigel eventually was good enough to go down the beginner's slope. Shannon needs more time and Amber needs to grow some longer legs :)
