Jeonju is the 16th largest city in South Korea and the capital of North Jeolla Province. It is both urban and rural due to the closeness of Wanju County which almost entirely surrounds Jeonju (Wanju County has many residents who work in Jeonju). The name Jeonju literally means Perfect Region. It is an important tourist center famous for Korean food, historic buildings, sports activities, and innovative festivals.
In May 2012, Jeonju was chosen as a Creative Cities for Gastronomy as part of UNESCO's Creative Cities Network. This honour recognizes the city's traditional home cooking handed down over thousands of years, its active public and private food research, a system of nurturing talented chefs, and its hosting of distinctive food festivals.
HISTORY:
In the fertile Honam plain, famous for Jeonju Hanok Village and exceptional produce, Jeonju has been an important regional center in the province for centuries. The city was the capital of Hubaekje Kingdom, which was founded by Gyeon Hwon. Under Hubaekje, it was known as Wansanju. It was regarded as the spiritual capital of the Joseon Dynasty because the Yi royal family originated there. The town was occupied by the Donghak peasants' movement in 1894.[2] Jeonju was given metropolitan status in 1935, and the city was founded in 1949.
Since the Joseon Dynasty period, it was a metropolis, but it did not experience industrialization in the 20th century compared to other parts of Korea. It does not have the industrial infrastructure, manufacturing, or heavy industries found in other Korean major cities. Today, traditional touring and sight seeing is a major industry in the city.
CULTURE:
Jeonju bibimbap 전주비빔밥, a traditional local food, is well known across South Korea. There are several very popular vegetarian restaurants serving Jeonju style food and pine wine.[4]
The National Jeonju Museum exhibits ancient relics from the Baekje days.
There are extensive royal museums, temples, a castle fortress on a hillside, and a well-known paper museum, as well as an annual paper fashion show highlighting the latest styles and traditional Korean clothing made of paper.
The Jeonju Hanok Village (Hanok Maeul) is a traditional-style village in the heart of Jeonju, housing over 800 traditional hanok style buildings. It contains many traditional tea shops, souvenir shops, and restaurants.
Jeongdong Catholic Church was built 1908–1914 by French priest Xavier Baudonet on the site of the Korean Catholic martyrs in 1791 and 1801. This Byzantine and Romanesque church has been designated Korea National Treasure No. 288.
The Jeonju International Sori Festival was among Songlines' 25 Best International Festivals in 2014.
The Jeonju International Film Festival draws about 50,000 visitors annually.
The local mountains and parks are popular for outdoor recreation due to its rural location. There are historical sites in the area. The city has a zoo, a park, and the Hanguk Sound and Culture Hall, a large, modern concert complex on the Chonbuk National University campus.
TRANSPORTATIONS:
Many city buses and taxis are available in Jeonju. However, tourists are often advised to walk between points of interest, as many attractions are near each other.
ATTRACTIONS:
Jeonju International Film Festival usually runs from the end of April to May for one week annually.
SPORTS:
Jeonju hosts K League team Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors FC. The team's home ground is the Jeonju World Cup Stadium.

Jeonju Hanok Village is famous for its collection of extraordinarily well-preserved traditional Korean houses all gathered in one place.
It's no doubt impressive during the day... but under the moonlight it's truly special.
Our Kim Jung-soo took a nightwalk in Jeonju himself.
Jeonju in Jeollabuk-do Province, southwest of Korea, is a globally famous city renowned for its carefully preserved community of over 8-hundred traditional Korean houses, known as hanok.
And designated in 2010 as an international Slow City, the Jeonju Hanok Village welcomes millions of visitors every year, with more than 8 million experiencing the village's attractions in 2015 alone.
The Jeonju Hanok Village usually closes its doors before 8 p.m., but on Friday night, colorful lights illuminated the alleys to serve as the backdrop for a special cultural event.
Dubbed the Nightwalk in Jeonju, the program was organized by the Cultural Heritage Administration in collaboration with the city of Jeonju.
The city would turn invisible at night, but not tonight. We hope visitors can experience an entirely new aspect of the Jeonju Hanok Village and Jeonju city as a whole with the various performances and attractions we have prepared.
Just like what the mayor said, visitors can freely stray off from the designated paths and enter specially arranged buildings within the village.
The Gyeonggijeon Hall is one example. The site usually functions as a quiet shrine that preserves the portrait of king taejo from the Joseon Dynasty, but today, visitors can experience a meticulous reenactment of Korea’s traditional tea ceremony also known as darye.
Visitors can learn about the history and customs of traditional beverages as well as have a taste of freshly brewed tea in a timeless ambiance.
“We came to Jeonju because of the architecture…the tea ceremony and everything else…it’s really nice here….”
Dancers donned on their finest traditional Korean dresses, or hanbok, to greet the smiling crowd.
The national intangible heritage center is another must-visit location. Here, spectators are treated with exclusive performances which include jaw dropping exhibitions of tightrope walking, known as jultagi.
What follows is a magical shadow-theatre performance,…which captivates the audience with a story told through light and darkness.
For those interested in experiencing Jeonju Hanok Village at night, the city plans to have one more night-walk event on the last day of September.

Hanok Guesthouse: 'Urijip, Our Home,' located at the rear of the Bukchon Traditional Culture Center, is an open type hanok (traditional Korean house). In the anchae (the main building of a house) live the family of the operating owner of the guesthouse, and it is possible to use two rooms in the sarangchae (a detached house) and one room in the byeolchae (a separated building). The hanok is in a comfortable and convenient location, way from the noisy urban center. It also offers some opportunities to have a glance of a Korean tradition such as Kimjang which is recently listed on UNESCO's list of intangible cultural heritages.

Today, let's walk along the beautiful Jeonju Hanok Village located in Jeonju, Jeollabuk-do. Although it is not very well known to foreigners, but it is a place where you can experience Korea's beautiful Hanok.

Jeonju Hanok Village is a village in the city of Jeonju, South Korea, and overlaps with the Pungnam-dong and Gyo-dong neighborhoods. The village contains over 800 Korean traditional houses called 'Hanok'.[1] The village is famous among Koreans and tourists because of its traditional buildings that strongly contrast with the modern city around it. The village was designated as an International Slow City in 2010 in recognition of its relaxed pace of life where traditional culture and nature blend harmoniously.[2] The number of visitors to Jeonju Hanok Village has increased sharply since the 2000s. The visitor numbers more than doubled from 2007 to 2014, from 3.17 million to 7.89 million. Excluding Seoul, Jeonju is ranked third among major tourist cities throughout South Korea, behind Jeju and Busan.
he City of Jeonju has played a key role in the long history of Korea. The city was once the capital of the Hubaekje Kingdom, which was founded by Gyeon Hwon in the 900s.[4] The city was regarded as the spiritual capital of the Joseon Dynasty because the Yi royal family was from there. In the Joseon Dynasty, Jeonju governed the Jeolla-do area along with Jeju Island, which was considered the center of administration. This is why the city is called 'the ground of more than 1000 years history'.[4]
People first settled in the Jeonju area over 10,000 years ago. At first, people lived around the foot of a mountain. Then, in the Silla kingdom, people moved into the flat land surrounding the mountain. People in Jeonju began constructing the city's defensive wall and many villages naturally formed around the city. These villages were the beginning of the current Hanok village. After the demolition of the Jeonju's city wall during the Korean Empire period, the residential area within the wall began to expand throughout the Pungnam-dong and Gyo-dong districts led by the Yangban. The village has become one of the most popular tourist attractions of Jeonju

Special exhibition about traditional Korean mask dance 'Talchum' held in Jeonju
무형유산원, '탈놀이, 신명에 실어 시름을 날리다' 특별전
A special exhibition about traditional Korean mask dance, known as 'Talchum' , is being held at the National Intangible Heritage Center in Jeonju, Jeollabuk-do Province.
The exhibition is titled 'In high spirit, away from sorrows: Traditions of Korean mask dance drama'.
After BTS performed a Korean mask dance at a music awards show in December 2018, interest in Korean mask dance has been growing globally.
The exhibition shows a video of BTS's performance and also features 14 kinds of traditional Korean mask dance that have been designated as intangible cultural assets.
It will also display five traditional Korean masks called 'Hahoetal' that were made more than 600 years ago.
The exhibition runs until February 23rd.

ukchon Hanok Village is a Korean traditional village in Seoul with a long history located on the top of a hill between Gyeongbok Palace, Changdeok Palace and Jongmyo Royal Shrine. The traditional village is composed of lots of alleys, hanok[1] and is preserved to show a 600-year-old urban environment.
A poll of nearly 2,000 foreign visitors, conducted by the Seoul Metropolitan Government in November 2011, stated that exploring the narrow streets of Bukchon was their fourth favorite activity in Seoul.[3]
According to data by the Bukchon Traditional Culture Center, 30,000 people visited the area in 2007. However, after the village was featured in television programmes, such as 1 Night 2 Days and Personal Taste, the number rose to 318,000 in 2010. In 2012 the figure is expected to double to more than 600,000.[4]
A large beautiful hanok has open to the public in 2015, as part of the Seoul Museum of History. It is located in an alley, just on the foot of the hill. Entrance is free, the visit allows to see those traditional housing in 15–20 minutes.
If you want to get to Bukchon Hanok Village it is close to Samcheongdong street and located between the Gyeongbokgung Palace and Changdeokgung Palace. You can get to the Bukchon Hanok Village in Seoul by taking the subway to the Anguk Station (Seoul Subway Line 3). Take exit 3 and head to your right. After about 200 meters you will see large information signs that begin the Bukchon Village Walking Tour. In this Hanok Village there is a free walking tour is about 2–3 hours long taking you to multiple destinations will you collect stamps from each of them and at the end you can get a keychain at the end. The village is the home to Bukchon Traditional Culture Center, Seoul Intangible Cultural Heritage Center, Donglim Knot Museum, Gahoe Museum, Han Sangsu Embroidery Museum, Bukchon Asian Art Museum, and Owl Museum. Sll place to you should make sure to visit on your trip to Korea. In Bukchon that has over 600 years of history surrounding it many of these hanoks operate as cultural centers, guesthouses, restaurants, and tea houses, providing visitors with an opportunity to experience, learn and immerse themselves in traditional Korean culture. They have very picturesque locations and beautiful architecture that you no longer seen in modern-day society. Overall the villages are amazing locations that everyone should see and enjoy. Many tourists come here for photo opportunities and to immerse themselves in the history that is now surrounded by the modern Korea. You can make a guided tour reservation to help you go around the trail. There are tons if things to do while you are there. Recently in 2018 because of so many tourists visiting the area they have changed the hours of when people may visit from 9-5 Monday-Saturday and Sundays is now closed off to nonresidents.[5] Currently there is an issue with tourists making trouble for the residents that live there; one resident even being yelled at for driving their car on its narrow roads. Residents who live there are not very happy that their resident environment is being taken over by an overwhelming number of tourists taking photos all the time. This village averages about 10,000 visitors a day. Because of the tourists the number of residents fell from over 9000 to 7530; they say the tourists are driving the residents out of the neighborhood.
