Taste of Korean Temple Food with Wookwan
July 19, 2018 - The Korea Society welcomes Wookwan, cookbook author of “Wookwan’s Korean Temple Food: The Road to the Taste of Enlightment,” to introduce Korean temple food built on the philosophy of Buddhism along with the long tradition of Korean cuisine. Korean temple food “does not only provide nutrition for a healthy body, but preparing the food is a practice of mediation as well.” Wookwan, a respected monk and temple-food expert, will demonstrate the preparation of several dishes while sharing knowledge on each ingredient on how to retain natural flavors.
The event, co-organized by Korean Cultural Center New York and International Contents Platform, ICP, is not to be missed with inspiring talks followed by a tasting reception.

A Special Invitation: Korean Temple Stay
A Korean temple welcomes special guests
Daeheung Temple, a thousand year-old Buddhist temple built during the Shilla Dynasty era and situated in Duryun Mountain, in Haenam, South Jeolla Province, welcomes foreign visitors to its temple stay program. It was back during the 2002 World Cup that Korean temples opened their doors to foreigners. At the time, the temples were used as lodgings for foreign tourists. They now come to experience the basics of Buddhist etiquette, Zen meditation and Buddhist meal ceremonies. To those of non-Buddhist faith, the temple stay program is not a religious activity, but a chance to experience Korean culture.
Buddhist culture, Thailand's signature tourism content
To the Thai people, donating food to Buddha and his monks is a basic way of life. Thailand teaches how to give traditional Thai massages to foreigners and has the world's largest meditation center, with 50 branch offices worldwide to spread Thai meditation techniques.
New transformations to globalize Korean temple stays
Myogak Temple in downtown Seoul is breaking the stereotype by holding its temple stay program in the city. Its downtown location and English-speaking temple stay program have allowed foreigners to easily approach an unfamiliar tradition. Another effort to globalize Korean temple stays can be found in the Temple Stay Information Center. Opened in traditional Insa-dong, a favorite destination of foreign tourists, the Center provides information on 108 temple stay programs nationwide and interpretation services throughout the year. In addition, the Center offers an array of Buddhist reading materials and various teas representing temples around Korea.
More memorable and meaningful temple stays in Korea
Yeongpyeong Temple in Gongju, South Chungcheong Province hosts a Siberian chrysanthemum festival every fall. Ever since the temple created an extensive Siberian chrysanthemum field, its temple stay program has evolved into a local festival, drawing more visitors to the area. Also, the pilgrimage to 33 Buddhist sacred sites, which started in 2008, typifies a new side of Korea's temple stay programs. In the pilgrimage's first year, roughly 7,000 Japanese tourists visited Korean temples. The pilgrimage program has helped broaden understanding between Korean and Japanese Buddhists.
Korean Buddhist cuisine captivates New York
American public figures have gathered at the Korean Cultural Center in Manhattan to taste Korean Buddhist food. The Korean Cultural Center hosts the event to publicize Korea's temple stay programs and Buddhist culture. After tasting some 40 delectable Buddhist dishes made without meat or artificial seasonings, people grow more interested in Korean Buddhist culture. Simple yet tasty Buddhist dishes win over health-conscious Westerners. Teaching people to value all living things and be thankful for food, Korean Buddhist cuisine will continue to move people around the world.
Michelin Starred Korean Temple Cuisine in Seoul Korea
Join us as we eat at a Michelin Starred Korean Monastic Food restaurant in Seoul, Balwoo Gonyang. It’s a full five course meal, all without any garlic, onions, chives, wild chives and Chinese squill. Some dishes are indeed bland, but some were quite amazing. Particularly the mushroom dish was delicious and the signature dish of the restaurant.

Korean Temple Stay at Beomeosa Buddhist Temple (범어사) in Busan, South Korea
Come join us for a Korean Temple Stay at Beomeosa Buddhist Temple (범어사) located in a gorgeous mountain setting just outside of Busan, South Korea. For years I had dreamed of experiencing a Korea Temple Stay; however, while living in Korea I always put it off thinking I'll do it next week. Fortunately, on this most recent trip back to South Korea I had a chance to finally do an overnight immersive temple stay.
Our program included Buddhist temple Korean food (dinner and breakfast); lectures on Buddhist practices, rules and history; meditation and bowing; a complete tour of the temple grounds and drumming ceremony. All in all this Korean Temple Stay was a total immersive experience and something I'll never forget. It was such an enlightening and tranquil experience I would honestly do it again if I have the chance.
If you're visiting South Korea and you're looking to do something unique and non-touristy consider doing a temple stay program where you can visit this temple or another one located in various locations across the country. For more information check out this site:

Korean Temple Stay at Beomeosa Buddhist Temple (범어사) in Busan, South Korea
Hey guys! We are Samuel and Audrey, a vlogging travel couple from Canada. In this travel channel we share our travel and food vlogs while touring the world.
Our most recent trip was to South Korea where I embarked upon a two-week adventure without Audrey. Invited as part of a YouTube vlogging trip, organized by KTO, I spent the first week traveling with other YouTubers in Seoul, Busan and Gyeongju. My second week included independent exploration of Korea with my good friend and fellow YouTuber David of DavidsBeenHere.
Having lived and traveled in South Korea, the chance to return to one of my favorite countries was one of the biggest surprises of 2019. On this particular trip, I had an opportunity to do many things I had not previously covered including a visit to the DMZ (Demilitarized Zone between South Korea and North Korea), a Buddhist Temple Stay and a Korean cooking class. It was almost as if the program designed by KTO knew exactly what I had missed out on before.
Obviously, a huge highlight from the two weeks I spent revisiting Korea was the food. I feasted on all of my favorite Korean dishes including Korean barbecue, dolsot bibimbap, haemul pajeon, tteokbokki, bulgogi, kimbap and many others. I can honestly say that Korean food is world-class and is one of my top 5 favorite cuisines in the world. Aside from trying familiar dishes, I had the opportunity to sample raw Korean seafood for the first time.
While visiting Seoul, highlights included going to Gyeongbokgung Palace, Namsan Seoul Tower, Jogyesa Temple and Hongdae. As one of the biggest cities in the world, I barely scratched the surface of things to do in Seoul.
Spending extended time in Busan was my favorite part about the trip with top highlights including a Korean temple stay, fresh fish markets and a Korean baseball game. It was from Busan that we ended up taking a day-trip to Daegu where we enjoyed a traditional Korean market and tried Galbi-Jjim for the first time.

Amazing Korean Food and Attractions in Seoul! (Day 2)
Dongdaemun Grilled Fish Street►
Seoul Travel Guide here►
Day 2 on Seoul turned out to be a great one full day tour of Seoul. We started by visiting a few of the most famous Seoul attractions, had an incredible lunch, and then continued on to visit more attractions and ended with an amazing Korean grilled fish dinner.
00:51 Deoksugung Palace; 1,000 Won ($0.84); City Hall Station, Exit 2. For our first stop for the day, we took the Metro to Deoksugung Palace, which is one of the number of famous Royal palaces in Seoul. It was a nice place to walk around, still pretty quiet in the morning when we got there.
1:54 Gyeongbokgung Palace, Gyeongbokgung Station, Exit 5; Entrance price - 3,000 Won ($2.53). One of the most famous attractions in Seoul is the Gyeongbokgung Palace, and it’s an absolutely huge complex where you can walk around and see the different palaces and temples. We didn't’ have a lot of time, but I did spend a few minutes watching the guards at the front, and then walking around the inner sections of the palace. It’s one of the must visit places in Seoul.
3:46 Bukchon Son Mandu Restaurant (북촌손만두); 35,000 Won for 4 bowls of noodles, 1 combination plate of mandu dumplings for 12,000 Won. Located near to Bukchon Hanok village is a legendary restaurant in Seoul known as Bukchon Son Mandu (북촌손만두). I had eaten there before on a previous trip to Seoul, but at a different location at Insadong. This time we ate at their original location, and they specializes in both mandu dumplings, and bowls of noodles. We ordered a mixed plate of mandu which included both fried and steamed mandu and I got a bowl of mul naengmyeon (랭면), which is a Korean ice cold noodles dish. All the food was delicious. Bukchon Son Mandu is a great place to eat when you’re in Seoul.
9:54 Bukchon Hanok Village; Another one of the top attractions in Seoul is the Bukchon Hanok Village, an old village in the heart of Seoul where you can find traditional buildings and homes and businesses. It has become a bit on the touristy side, but there are many locals that visit, and I think it’s a great place to take a walk and enjoy the atmosphere of Seoul. We also stopped to have a couple skewers of what is one of my favorite Korean street foods, dakkochi, which are grilled chicken skewers.
11:07 Korean Street Food near Dongdaemun Market: In the evening, we took the Metro over to Dongdaemun station and found a small side street to eat some Korean street food snacks. We had tteokbokki, gimbap, and some kind of boiled fish tofu on a stick. All the snacks together came to 7,000 Won ($5.91).
13:18 Dongdaemun Grilled Fish Street: For dinner, we didn’t really have any plans, but we just happen to stumble into what I later found out was the Dongdaemun Grilled Fish Street, because there were at least a half dozen grilled fish restaurants. The restaurant served a number of different types of fish, all salted heavily and grilled. Along with rice and all the banchan sides, it was a Korean food meal I loved.
17:34 Dongdaemun Area: Finally, to end this full one day tour of Korean food and attractions in Seoul, we took a walk around the Dongdaemun area, full of shopping malls and action.
I think it turned out to be a pretty good one day in Seoul!

Sleeping in a Buddhist Temple - Hwagyesa Templestay Program - Seoul, South Korea
My friend Teeka and I spent one night at Hwagyesa temple near Seoul, South Korea. Here's a taste of our experience!
ArTravel(Ep.5) Chef Chele's Wholesome Food from Nature - Spanish Chef Chele Gonzalez _ Full Episode
Chele Gonzalez is the head chef of a high-end restaurant in the Philippines, a restaurant that was selected as one of The World’s 50 Best Restaurants. Born in Spain, he gets the inspiration for his cooking through traveling and creates new menus with the ingredients he finds in nature. He becomes interested in Korean temple food, a cuisine rooted in nature. He embarks on a journey that takes him to Jinkwansa Temple, Cheonjinam of Baekyangsa Temple, and other places famous for their temple food, where he meets the masters and encounters various themed temple food.
Temple food, the prototype of Korea's food culture
A special secret hides in the kitchen of Venerable Seonjae. Opening the lid of a crock reveals crystallized seed soy sauce that attests to the years gone by. The temple's kimchi, a dish that tastes better and better through fermentation, is also different. Chef Chele and his teacher make temple-style kimchi using special ingredients and seasoning.
Another characteristic of temple food is the use of seasonal ingredients. Chef Chele meets Venerable Wookwan and learns about dishes made with mushrooms, excellent ingredients that give off the aroma of autumn. He falls in love with the healthy dishes that are simple yet delectable and nutritious.
A visit to the holy land of temple food
Chef Chele stays overnight at Jinkwansa Temple in Seoul, where he gets to learn about the temple's special foods and experience what it is like to practice Buddhism. He also experiences enlightenment by joining in balwugongyang.
In Baekyangsa Temple's Cheonjinam, where the colors of autumn are in full display, various temple dishes are created in the hands of Venerable Jeongkwan, who even amazed a Michelin three-star chef. Chef Chele is particularly drawn to bugak made with natural ingredients that are fried using a method that is unique to temple cuisine. A blissful meal is prepared just for the chef.
Having visited the holy land of Korea's temple food and met the temple food experts, Chele Gonzalez prepares his dishes with seasonal ingredients using the cooking techniques that he has learned. What kind of food will he serve?

Trying UNIQUE KOREAN STREET FOOD in Gamcheon Cultural Village - Busan, Korea
Come join us as we visit colorful Gamcheon Cultural Village in Busan, Korea to try unique Korean street food. Visiting Gamcheon Culture Village (감천문화마을 - 甘川文化마을) is one of the most popular areas to visit for tourist given that it offers incredible views, fascinating colorful architecture and winding hilly streets. It is also an okay place to try Korean street food in Busan.
David's channel:
In terms of the Busan street food we had the following items:
1) Bungeo-ppang (붕어빵) - Fish-shaped battered waffle with sweet red-bean paste inside
2) Hot Bar (핫바) - Deep-fried fish paste with various sauces on top
3) Korean melon chamoe (참외) - also known as the oriental melon
4) Frozen beer - beer with a malt like frozen soft serve on top
5) Jellies with chocolate sauce and peanut/soy bean toppping
After checking out some great vantage points located in Gamcheon Cultural village we walked a bit and then hopped into a cab trying some craft beers at Galmegi brewing company. Overall, this was some of the worst Korean street food I've ever had but still an interesting experience.
