RHODES ISLAND - Medieval Castle of Kritinia (Kastellos) - Rhodes
The Kritinia were ancient city of Rhodes.
Its history stems from ancient times. In Greek mythology, Althaimenis, eldest son of Katreas, grandson of Minos, king of Crete, because the oracle told him that he would kill his father, he left Crete, Rhodes comes in and colonize Kritinia. But homesick place and so he made the mountain Attaviros a temple in honor of Zeus Attaviros. Famous statues of this temple is said were two golden cows.
Originally, the settlement was coastal (the current position Kamiros Skala), but in the post-Byzantine period was moved more mountainous, for more security against pirates. The ancient settlement eventually sunk. Saved a few ruins, most of them in the sea. On land there are only the remains of an early Christian church Basilica.
In 1658, the Francesco Morosini attempted to conquer Rhodes apovivazontas army on the beach of Kamiros Scala, but the guard, timely eidopoiimeni from Halki, repel him. The subsequent safety of the settlement based on the castle (Castello). Therefore, until the liberation of the Dodecanese, the village was named Kastellos, from the Latin Castellum, which means fortress or Castel Nuovo, which refers to 1480.
The castle of Kritinia is a mixture of Byzantine and Medieval style and inside there are the remains of the Catholic Church of St. Paul and newer buildings, because the castle was used during the Venetian rule as Naval Base (Mariners).
The Kritinia is 55 km. from the town of Rhodes. It is built on a hill and has panoramic sea views.
Kritinia Castle - Rhodes
It is situated two kilometers northwest of the village of Kritinia and fifty five kilometers away from the city of Rhodes.
The Castle of Kritinia is also known as Kastellos.
It is a mixture of Byzantine and Medieval style.
In its interior one can see the remnants of the Saint Paul’s catholic church and newer buildings, since the castle was also used as a dockyard during the Italian occupation
Kritinia Castle - Rhodes, Greece ruins of splendor
Magnificent views of the Agean Sea await you, at the top of this ancient Venetian castle that was built in 1472, by the.Knights of St. John. Now in ruins, it is located outside of the village of Kritinia, on the Grecian island of Rhodes. You can also see other islands in the distance, such as Chalki. This is probably one of the most beautiful examples of splendid, magnificent remains that continue to deteriorate, in one of the most beautiful settings every. Touched me in every way possible....won't ever forget the experience.
When we visited, it was free of charge, as it appears the ticket booth is permanently closed; no security guards in sight - the parking area is also unattended. Though the castle is now in ruins, it is easy to access after a short climb up some steps that remain. It is also apparent that common sense is needed - it is obvious that this abandoned site is in a state of continuous decay - we saw no signs to warn people of safety issues, but never felt unsafe while walking about.
As always, Ed did all of the camcorder video filming, along with any narrations heard. I all of the still photography, edited everything, including adding the song Sunflower (by Topher Mohr and Alex Elena) from the free You Tube music library) during the still photos slide show portion, etc.

island of RHODES: EXPLORING AN ABANDONED ANCIENT FORT (GREECE) ????
SUBSCRIBE: - On a very hot day, let's go to Greece, let's visit the spectacular Greek island of Rhodes and let's make it to the village of Archangelos or Arhangelos which is one of the larger villages of Rhodes and has about 6,000 inhabitants (only Rhodes Town and Trianta have more inhabitants). It is 30 kilometers south of Rhodes Town on the east side of the island.
We are going to climb up to the castle of Saint John that was built by the Knights which stands on top of the mountain on the outskirts of the village. The castle was built after the fall of Constantinople in 1453 by the Knights of St John to protect the island against a possible Ottoman invasion. In the church of St. John church there are well preserved frescoes from the 14th century.
Rhodes, the largest of Greece’s Dodecanese islands, is known for its beach resorts, ancient ruins and remnants of its occupation by the Knights of St. John during the Crusades. The city of Rhodes has an Old Town featuring the medieval Street of the Knights and the castlelike Palace of the Grand Masters. Captured by the Ottomans and then held by the Italians, the palace is now a history museum.
Greece is a country in southeastern Europe with thousands of islands throughout the Aegean and Ionian seas. Influential in ancient times, it's often called the cradle of Western civilization. Athens, its capital, retains landmarks including the 5th-century B.C. Acropolis citadel with the Parthenon temple. Greece is also known for its beaches, from the black sands of Santorini to the party resorts of Mykonos.
