KAZIMIERZ - THE HISTORIC JEWISH QUARTER IN CRACOW ( Poland ) , September 2017
Special Jewish visit in Kraków/Poland Jewish District - Kazimierz Part 1
Kazimierz – the district south of the Old Town between the Wisła River and ul. Dietla (where a tributary of the Wisła once flowed) was the centre of Jewish life in Kraków for over 500 years, before it was systematically destroyed during World War II. In the communist era it became one of Kraków’s dodgiest districts while gradually falling into disrepair. Rediscovered in the 1990s, thanks to the fall of the regime and worldwide exposure through the lens of Steven Spielberg, Kazimierz has rebounded and is today Kraków’s most exciting district – a bustling, bohemian neighbourhood packed with historical sites, atmospheric cafes and art galleries. Well-known for its associations with Schindler and Spielberg, traces of Kazimierz’s Jewish history have not only survived, but literally abound in the form of the district’s numerous synagogues and Jewish cemeteries. In fact, no other place in Europe conveys a sense of pre-war Jewish culture on the continent better than Kazimierz. As a result, the district has become a major tourist draw and pilgrimage site for Jews, which has led to the return of contemporary Jewish culture in the area. Each summer since 1988 the massively popular Jewish Culture Festival has filled Kazimierz’s streets and cafes with music, while educating Kraków’s residents and guests about the city’s pre-war Jewish history and celebrating modern Jewish culture. The fact that it’s one of the year’s biggest parties proves that there’s more to Kazimierz than sepia photographs and old synagogues. Here you’ll find the heart of Kraków’s artistic, bohemian character behind the wooden shutters of dozens of antique shops and art galleries. Peeling façades and obscure courtyards hide dozens of bars and cafes, many affecting an air of pre-war timelessness. Centred around the former Jewish square now known as Plac Nowy, Kazimierz has emerged as the city’s best destination for cafe culture and nightlife. Alternative, edgy and packed with oddities, Kazimierz is an essential point of interest to any visitor.

Jednak kilkanaście lat temu zaczęła ona powracać do życia.

Jewish Quarter Tour by SeeKrakow
The District of Kazimierz is the historical Jewish part of Krakow. Its narrow streets and courts are full of interesting Jewish architecture. Founded in 1335 by King Kazimierz the Great, this district used to be a separate city altogether.

The Jews of Krakow
A trip to Krakow is not complete without a tour of the Jewish quarter of Kazimierz and the neighbouring district of Podgorze, location of the infamous Krakow Ghetto.
Oscar Schindler's factory - a short walk from the Podgorze is being refurbished and will open in Spring 2008, it will house a museum and a modern art gallery.
I would like to note that another famous rescuer of Polish Jews was the Japanese diplomat Chiune Sugihara, who managed to save the lives of over 4000 Jewish refugees by issuing exit visas.
Of all the videos that I uploaded it is this one that has given me the most grief. Please do not write any flammatary comment as it will be deleted.

Jewish District - Kazimierz - Krakow
Kazimierz Jewish District, is the central district of Krakow, which is located over the hill of Wawel.
Just get away from the elegant buildings of the Old City and walk to the south-east, to plunge, after just one kilometer, in a completely different.
Instead of the wide streets traveled by cars, there are narrow streets and houses time-worn as a dress rumpled and worn with age.
We visit the location where they filmed a scene in the movie Schindler's List, the scale and the child.
Almost all identify with the Jewish quarter Kazimierz, in reality it is only the eastern part, and to be honest, even here the Jews are the majority.
Were the ancient synagogues, historic buildings, a few shops and some kosher restaurants; for the rest of the population it is predominantly Catholic.
We continue with the visit, entering the New Synagogue and its cemetery; the old cemetery located behind the synagogue is one of the oldest in the entire Poland.

Kazimierz (Polish pronunciation: [kaˈʑimʲɛʂ]; Latin: Casimiria; Yiddish: קוזמיר) is a historical district of Kraków and Kraków Old Town, Poland. Since its inception in the fourteenth century to the early nineteenth century, Kazimierz was an independent city, a royal city of the Crown of the Polish Kingdom, located south of Kraków Old Town and separated by a branch of the Vistula river. For many centuries, Kazimierz was a place of coexistence and interpenetration of Christian and Jewish cultures, its north-eastern part of the district was historic Jewish, whose Jewish inhabitants were forcibly relocated in 1941 by the German occupying forces into the Krakow ghetto just across the river in Podgórze . Today Kazimierz is one of the major tourist attractions of Krakow and an important center of cultural life of the city.
Jews had played an important role in the Kraków regional economy since the end of the 13th century, granted the freedom of worship, trade and travel by Bolesław the Pious in his General Charter of Jewish Liberties issued already in 1264. The Jewish community in Kraków had lived undisturbed alongside their Christian neighbours under the protective King Kazimierz III, the last king of the Piast dynasty. Nevertheless, in early 15th century pressured by the Synod of Constance some dogmatic clergy began to push for less official tolerance. Accusations of blood libel by a fanatic priest in Kraków led to riots against the Jews in 1407 even though the royal guard hastened to the rescue.[
